I'm playing the piano part for this with my HS band. I'm only 14, but I still think this is awesome. We're playing a Tichelli piece, but I don't really care for it.
Percy Grainger wrote excellent music. And from what i've read, it seems he was the "Eric Whitacre" of his era. This & "Lincolnshire Posy" are my favorite two Grainger tunes.
Gosh, I played this song a year ago and I still break out into shivers every time I hear it. I remember the first time we really got it right I just started crying my eyes out right there in band. This song is the most beautiful thing ever composed.
yea this is a favorite of mine too. Bought a recording of Schuman's Chester for band when I was in All-state band years ago. It's a great piece too. The recording was by the Goldwyn Band and Percy Grainger played the piano part. There was no vocal part in the recording. Is that optional? This all city(?) band played it great and at the same tempo as as the Goldwyn Band. Kudos.
lol there is no contrabass sax. Maybe ur refering to the contrabass clarinet. There was no contrabass sax in this ensemble the lowest pitch instrument u see there in the sax family is the bari
yeah it sounds a little heavy on some parts that really should be lighter...i only know this because we played it last year for state competition, and my band director hounded us constantly because it wasn't light and playful enough. did this song get stuck in your head after you played it? because it was constantly in mine from the time we got the music into the summer when school was over...
Good sounding ensemble, but a little heavy. As my director said when we played this piece, "It's called the Children's March, not the Elephant's March!" Without that lightness, it didn't make much sense musically. But besides, a very good sounding performance. :)
omg >.> we just strated working on this piece on monday and we sound like crap....we are going to play it in a music festival... competion level 6 =).. odd how it twas written by a schitzophrenic guy...
there was a legend of my school having one, and i would love to play it. this piece rocks simply becuse of all the different parts that Granger wrote. I love my part! bass clarinet FTW
Well crap, we did this Last year Reynoldsburg, Oh and it sounded Great butttttt they have like 10 Bones a contrabass that knows what hes doing and other than that it sounded the same, Trumpets are a little Eh, but my Gratzy to the LB section, ~Bass Trombone here~
This is a great recording of this concert! I remember that night I was 4th Euphonium in that ensemble. I'm the one wearing a marching band uniform. It felt a bit awkward but I forgot about it when I started playing. Playing under the direction of a famous composer was an amazing experience. Frank Ticheli is a really good composer and conductor! Thanks again!
There is a contrabass clarinet seated in that band!! I have never seen one in a highschool band in my life! I play the bass clarinet, and that's a semi-rarity on its own, but a contra bass?! Wow!
I played this song in school. We didn't sound NEARLY as good as the beauty you guys brought up. Thank you for posting.
I'm the one who played the piano. I wasn't in the 11/12 band that year. I was actually in the 9/10 all county. I had played the piano part previously that winter at the Midwest clinic. They couldn't find anyone that could learn to play that part in 2 days, so i just filled in. It's a difficult part. I apologize for any mistakes. :)
I played this song on the euphonium as well in high school. It was ridiculously hard, especially on the high solo part. Good job on the euph solo at the beginning.
I played this piece this year with my high school band. This is a really great recording. Our band was only 48 members. I played euph in this... and those solos are a little hard to hear in this. Those parts are sick though, good job.
Thanks for posting this, it's the only decent recording of Children's March I've been able to find on YouTube. Dang, that's a huge band. And the choir part is really good too, you were lucky to play in this group. :)
played this piece in band and for all-states. i love it.

You guys should try the piano part... IT'S INSANE!!! If you ever see it performed, check out the pianist just after the second choir!
