I fully plan to clicker train my dog early, and I have no problem with my dog being a little rebellious but I would just like to know if this breed running away has ever been a problem with this breed of dog, whether it be from home or at a park somewhere. I'd like to never have to worry about it, as well as be able to take him/her on walks without a leash. I've heard it is a problem with this breed.
@NegaArson I've never had a problem with Jasper running away... however I always make sure that he's secure if he's outside so there isn't really an opportunity for him to run away. I don't walk him without a leash, as I don't want to take the risk.
@JMBFF1 With the right training and motivation, yes. They are very smart, you just need to find the right method that works for them. For Jasper, clicker training worked great. I recommend trying it.
I just got my dog Rocky, and I started with his training and you're right clicker method is great. Rocky learned sit nad stay in 5 days :). and is also great to see how proud he is when he does somethin' right...soo cute. your dog is adorable, my Rocky is a little smaller than him :)
I have just bought a Samoyed puppy and your clips are very helpful for a new dog owner like me. You inspired me to make clips with my puppy and to upload them. Your Jasper is a really adorable dog and I hope my Maggie will be as beautiful as he is when she is older.
I just got my Samoyed and he will be 8 weeks in about 3 days. I tried to start with simple commands like simple sit and he just doesn't seem interested in what I am telling. I used treats and he doesnt seem to go to crazy for them
He just sits there and lays down and then starts to sleep. He is sleeping a lot and plays very little and I feel I cant get his attention. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do.?
It's never too early! :) I started working with Jasper when he was 8 weeks old. Pretty much as soon as I got him. The sooner you start the better, but just do short, frequent training sessions so they don't get bored or frustrated. Good luck!
I read a lot of books, mostly. I didn't watch too many videos. The only videos I watched really were how to do tricks, like how to teach them "shy" and "high five" and stuff like that.
For ALL of his training, whether it be command-training, like sit or down, or tricks, I used the clicker method. I HIGHLY recommend this. It works very well. Just Google clicker training for dogs and do some research on it, I think you'll find it to be really useful when training your dog.
Be careful with your clicker, click as soon as he does what you want, not so long after. Its important that the click comes immediately upon the correct behaviour so he recognises it, and then the treat can come at any time after the click. I mention this because i saw a few times Jasper completed a trick and then you clicked.
a little tip on training your dog: Don't hold the treat in your hand while commanding him to do a trick, that will imply that you're bribing your dog to do a trick, keep it in your pocket and reward it every other trick or so.

You need to be a bit quicker on the click! You took several seconds after his action to click. Pretty good tricks for a young dog though.
