I think people need to understand that pageants and television have changed forever and will never be the same. The sophistication and elegance of the pageants in the past, and even TV shows like "What's My Line" are shows that could never appeal to television audiences of today. It is sad, but it's nice that we can still experience it here on You Tube
Terry's very deep religious convictions drenched every aspect of her life. She also happened to be a very open and honest person not given to cliches or pretending. I think that's why she made a perfect television personality because she so effortlessly connected to people. Note that in her crowning she maintains her poise and dignity, too; that is class!
i have to agree i like watching the miss america pageant too i started to watch in 1991.i like the old footage in 70's 80's.but i likeed this year's pageant even it is a reality show, but it was nice to see former miss america's there to celebrated the pageant's 90th anniversary.
I am so glad someone posted this. I used to watch Miss America with my mom who's gone now. We're from Wisconsin and TerryAnne was the 1st Miss America from our state. Mom was sleeping at this point in the competition and when Burt announced her win, I jumped up screaming...'she won! She won!'. Brings back so many good memories.
I used to wait eagerly every September for Miss America. It was an American institution. Atlantic City made a big mistake letting it go. Miss America still exists, but the format, political correctness and image have changed, and not for the better. Not what it used to be. I long for the pageants of yesteryear.
The song that helped Terry Anne Meeuwsen win the 1973 Miss America crown, "He Touched Me," was from a short-lived Broadway musical, "Drat, the Cat" in 1965 and was recorded by Barbra Streisand but didn't fare well on the charts. But then in August, 1970, Ronnie Dyson, a one-hit wonder, peaked at #6 with "Why Can't I Touch You," and exactly 3 years later, in August, 1973, just before Terry Anne's reign ended, Diana Ross topped the charts with "Touch Me in the Morning."
I have been watching Terri for years on the 700 Club and did not realize until last night's pageant (2011) that she was a former Miss America. I, too, remember the glory days of the pageant when the contestants were escorted by cadets, etc. I stopped watching when that tradition ended. I guess that must be why I didn't remember Terri as MA.
This is so surreal, 70s television was really like this. When she was walking down the runway and the man was singing, MAN major time travel moment. On another note, I was really pleasantly surprised by her ending statement because she mentions her beliefs and alludes to the Bible.
@moniiiiqua LOL nothing wrong with that as a matter of fact you can still see her moat days on the 700 Club on the family channel with Pat Robertson ,and she still talks about her faith.
@moniiiiqua LOL nothing wrong with that as a matter of fact you can still see her most days on the 700 Club on the family channel with Pat Robertson ,and she still talks about her faith.
This may sound like i'm lying, but I am not. I know Miss America (Mrs. Friedrich to me) very well. She is the mother of one of my best friends, Alysa-who to no surprise at all is just as beautiful, though not her biological daughter. I always tell her to try out for the pageant, it would not be a stretch for her to win.
Laurel Lea Scheafer was one on my favorites as well...the beginning of the 1970's produced three of the best Miss America's ever...Phyllis George, Laurel Lea Scheafter and Terry Meeuwsen... so long gone are the glory days of the Miss America Pageant......I miss the glory days... even some former Miss America's downplay the impact it had in it's glory days.........I still miss the former years nonetheless
every september now, i STILL feel like it's time to turn on tv for the miss america pageant, live from atlantic city...so sad it's no longer there and not held at summer's end anymore. like america's value system, the pageant (once held in high esteem), is devalued and mocked...
Yes, VTMCompany, that is so true and sad as well....the Miss America pageant was once an American Icon, and look what they've done to it now....just a reality show? ...how very sad for what as once an American Icon........
What class and elegance. This is what I have always loved about the Miss America pagent. It sickens me to see what a sham of reality television it has become today,
So very true...this was back whenever it meant something to be Miss America.....and Terry was perfect. Very sad to see what has become of the Miss America program and what was once an American icon.
@JONROSE44 I agree...this was when it meant something to be crowned Miss America...that;s why the tears of joy the look of joy and surpirse when their name was announced...and the girls actually worked hard to be Miss America and earn the scholarship..We should start a concerted effort to get the Miss America Pageant back where it belongs...in ATLANTIC CITY!!!!
The biggies should NEVER have monkeyed with the formula; they should have left at 10 competing in swimsuit, evening gown and talent, then narrowing it to the final five, and from there, selecting the standard bearer.
@Juliaflo Don't be a fool! Money runs EVERYTHING. Money is our God!!! If it can make someone more money, then anything and everything must be changed. Case closed.
notice the 2nd girl on left (of final six) at 0:28/0:29...that's 'miss kansas' cynthia sykes, who later became tv star on 'st. elsewhere.' besides making the top 10, she won her swimsuit preliminary competiton.

WOW I love the glitz and glamour of the 70's and 80's pageants. I wish there were more of this era's pageants on youtube.

I think Terry is even more beautiful today! I will always love and adore Terry, especially on the 700 Club. She is nearly perfect in every way.

@JONROSE44 I do, too, but I still watch the pageant. I admire the new winner, but believe she is a bit too young.
