A monk chooses to do those things. Before a person becomes a monk they're able to go in and see what they do for as long as they like. A monk KNOWS what they are getting into. And nobody FORCES them to do anything. They are free to go if they want

I think scientology is a cult but I also believe that christianity, particularly catholocism is as a cult as well.

That is true of monks of most major world religions (such as Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Buddhism, ect.). They don't even kick you out of the Roman Catholic Church if you leave the monastery, convent, or as being a priest.
