Also, i have personally lived in Japan, you must not have. Because soccer is easily the most popular sport in Japan. Go to high school soccer tournaments in Japan and just watch how many ppl are watching them, it's very popular there.

no the most popular sport in japan is NOT baseball. Have you watched read what i have been writing. I lived in Japan for many years growing up. For most young people in Japan their views on baseball is similar to the rest of the world: boring. Soccer is easily the number one sport in Japan now in terms of most watched on television, attended at stadiums, and played by youth. The reason they are getting better is because there are better youth systems and just plain waaay more ppl. Same as USA.

@folladordeprostis Maybe Japan qualifies for the WC is cuz which ever division they are with which consists of asian teams all of them suck, like China(sadly) Mongolia, Philipines, or Indonesia. Korea and Japan tops them all...easily. Canada on the other hand is in CONCACAF where theres Mexico, Honduras, and US(top teams in CONCACAF), so Canada has to beat them before they get anywhere else.

Canada qualified once in 1986 and played in a group with France (Platini era, Euro champs), Russia and Hungary. That should have been a turning point but Canada did not qualify for Italia 90 and failed to build on that momentum. They currently have many players in all levels of European club football, the problem isn't talent the problem lies in the organization and the national team's lack of time together and proper funding.

Canada had a good shot in 1993 but didn't quite make it. Also I think they won the Gold Cup in 2000 which was a pretty big tournament. We have the players we just don't have the organization.

I know these postings are from a while ago, but i must say that the USA is definitely NOT horrible at soccer...the lowest they've been ranked is 35! Canada has been ranked over 100 in the past. I love Canada, but they haven't beat the States in soccer since 1985! And the USA has never been ranked 6th....the highest was 8th, that's for you SabresDangle83.

I think the fact that they didnt win a game at the 2006 world cup sorta puts that ranking in doubt. I wouldnt use Fifa rankings as any indication of where USA stands in soccer. Having said that they've definately been better than canada over the past 15 yrs. For sure far from horrible. Id say consistently top 20.

I don't see them getting there soon. Hopefully they can at least make the last round of qualifying in CONCACAF for 2010. Improvement at least. The sport still needs to grow and the system needs to be changed (like in Australia for example.)

U20 team you mean? The national team is getting better though...we have some very good players....De Guzman, De Rosario, Stalteri, Gerba, Hutchinson, Hume, Hastings, Friend....Jaime Peters is a great up and coming player too. Hopefully we'll qualify for 2010.

Canada's play at the U20 tournament was definitely a dissappointment. They were expected to perform better than that, but simply didn't. It was the first time a host country didn't score a goal in all their matches played. But, we'll have to move on and hopefully Canadian soccer will improve in the future!
