I Filed this August 1991 when I was working At Barhaugh. The pits were situated around Alston, Cumbria. Though some of the pits were on the other side of the county Boundary in Northumberland.
They all worked the Little Limestone seam, semi Anthracite, which was around 18" thick, though it could get a lot lower, down to a foot and even 9".
Ayle was the last colliery working, tempory closing in 2004 but still has a licence on it.

Historic stuff. I remember visiting quite a few of those Northumberlan mines with my lad back in the mid 90s. Thanks for posting
