The thunder and lightning.The darkness when it was daytime.God was about to obliterate everyone and everything, in His rage over what happened to Jesus. Ben-Hur then reports to Esther that Jesus said to God "forgive them,for they not what they do". How close did it get to the literal end of the world,right then!

@Richardhedditch261 It was mother nature mourning the death of it's creator which is why the day turned dark and the earth shook not God trying to obliterate everyone. When the earth shook Jesus descended into Hell defeating Satan.

@warhawk40 Yes, well, i was merely making a case in accordance with the context of the movie itself. I'm not Christian or religious or anything. There are a matrix of themes in this scene. For example : Tierza is in pain [previously her mother Miriam said she was dying], and, previously, Esther quoted Jesus as "death is nothing to fear, if you have faith", and then Tierza is "not afraid anymore", as she is in death pains.Jesus dies and she is healed. So; I'm just saying its really well scripted.

It is not a rock. It is called a mezuzah, which signifies the Jewish Torah scrolls. A sign of respect in the Jewish faith is to kiss the mezuzah each time before entering the home. In this scene, Heston was fixing the mezuzah that had been worn and half broken due to wear and tear. Then he kisses it.
