I wouldn't just build it to save money, I would build it for the challenge, for the power, and for the sense of pride that I get for doing something that barely anyone would even think of doing. The surgeon may be able to build a great computer, but he'll make more money if he just hires some average tech, and does more surgeries instead. Basically, for him, building a computer is a waste of time, even if he can do it better than anyone else.

Whereas if you buy all the parts yourself you can get a 3 to 5 year warranty on your hard drive. The hard drive is the most likely component to mess up.

I built my own desktop with the brand new intel i3 proccesser and desktop board, for gig ram, 1 tb ram and lg lightscribe cd/dvdre-write drive, and a cooler master case.It's super efficiant. makes no noise, and is SUPER fast. I preffer building. :D

If I could, I would build my own laptop, because most computers on the shelf may have one or two things that let the rest of the system down for what you want to do, and laptops are way overpriced off the shelf, and are usually sold with slowish processors, and never really have any high end AMD laptops. And what if the RAM and motherboard weren't the speed or type you wanted in a desktop?

I know that there are kits that enable you to build your own laptop. Another obstacle in building a laptop is space. When you build a desktop, there is a lot of room to insert the necessary cables, cards, etc., but in a laptop, you have limited space. Imagine a laptop whose base is 5-10 inches thick!! LOL!
