hollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy shittttttt. Knowing i will never see the whole band together makes me pretty sad, just glad these videos let my generation get somewhat of a taste of what the magic of a dead show must of been like.
Perhaps harmony000 perhaps. Although, throughout Jerrys career he was able to handle himself musically in very strange situations and with starnge musicians. Also this Not Fade Away. a simple 3 chord progression, and easy to jam on playing lead. I have no doubt as to Pete's talent, I'll just chalk this up to a bad night and being on stage with a very coke'd up GD. Jerry rules! He also was'nt about to have Pete stand him up for a show he was filling in for the WHO for.
I saw this embedded on another site. I was sitting here at the beginning saying, "Hey wait a minute THAT guy's not in the Grateful Dead." Then -- I was doing something else and just listening. Then I looked up and said, "That guy looks just like Pete Townshend's brother SImon." At that moment, I realized who it was. Literally.
If you come on Jerrys' turf, you better be prepared to bring it. Townsend obviously was'nt. At least with this one. Jerry 1 Townsend 0.
No offense to Pete, but he schooled on very basic chor progrssion. E-E-E-A=E and A-A-A-D-A. Garia knows a hell of a lot of scales, plain for all to see.
@J3Associates1 same thing could be said if you drop Jerry into the middle of the Who, especially 1969-71, even though he is an incredible musician, he would have just been out of place. he might have just ended up bewildered when Keith and Pete got cooking.
no sense in being critical after all it's the Dead and. It's always a jam no matter who is around. Live musak always has a few mistakes big and little when jammin' . It is after all fun and the Music never will die. so just kick back and enjoy the fun with Pete rocking out with the very best live bunch of pirates the world has ever had a chance to meet and listen to through the years.
starting at about 6:28,look at jerrys jaw swinging left to right, they must have done a lot of coke before the set,ha only these boys could have done that for all those years
yea this is really wierd. I wonder how Pete's vibes affected the Deadosphere. Cuz Pete's more of the showy, self conscious type, which tends to suck the energy from the "get lost in the moment' types of musians. The Dead don't seem to be affected by it...
@brotherbuttcrack Jerry and Pete worked at different tempos, and it seems that Pete is mindful of not upstaging Jerry's style with his own at Jerry's gig. Jerry was being a gracious host and Pete was being a polite guest.
@duckman531 I agree man. I think Pete had one little slip up, but he's a human on drugs, so who cares right? But other than that yeah, ya hit it on the head, he's just bein' respectful as he knows it wouldn't be appropriate to start power chording and wind milling @ the Dead show. Great tune/jam. Keep rockin'.
Although I will agree with the others and say it is a strange pairing and it almost makes you wonder if Pete was just there, either partying on tour with the Who or just partying there, and one of the Dead ran into him, and asked him to play.
Too weird. Like asking Lemmy to sit in with Joan Biaz. Who/ Dead my favs, but together seems like one foot on the gas while the other on the brake. Also how did Pete end up there? Weird.
Look at Pete Townsend from the MIGHTY Who as he struggles in the Dead world, PT finally catches on at about the 6:00 mark, and I like Townsend and The Who but it shows you how easy the boys made it sound and look for 30 years plus
@briandavisradio i dig how you think about it. the dead is like some kind of gigantic musical monster and he's trying not to get eaten alive and sucked into it but that's the only way to really make it
Not fade away......from Buddy Holly..... but the Dead, and their fans sing it so well....You Know Our Love Will Not Fade Away...........Special guest Pete Townsend
the dead were always fortunate to have awesome musicians sit in with them to jam all through the ages perfect example is here with pete -------bob dylan, roger hornsby, steve winwood, and sooooooooooo many others man the dead groove like no other still wish i could have seen some of te 80s shows instead of just the whole 90s oh well! seeing over 50 in the 90s is better than seeing none lol
I love the Dead but it's so disheartining to know the behind-the-scenes turmoil going on with the band. I'm in the middle of Phil Lesh's autobiography and f I'm not mistaken this is the same day that Billy Kreutzmann fired the band's trusted manager Richard Loren and supposedly Billy physically attacked Phil right afterwards. Funnily enough, a lot of people feel this was a weak show. Phil even mentions the show wasn't that good either in his book.
christ. the blow musta been clean as hell and laid out behind the stacks at this show. jerry lost tooth enamel tonight, baby. love some amped up dead.
the sabotage comment was tongue in cheek....just sounds like Pete is out of his element playing with the dead and Garcia....maybe Garcia would play just as bad with the Who...different type of music...the Who played Rock and the Dead played God knows what....
Nah , the Dead totally respected Pete and the Who. They would never have dreamed of sabotaging him. Equipment trouble , absolutely, intentional not a chance. They wouldn't have invited him up there, plus they had played many double bills over the years going back to the late 60's. They were always regarded as gracious gentlemen, and open to all musicians - Branford, Clarence, Dylan, and Bruce Hornsby all maintained this fact. BTW., nice show.
maybe The Dead sabotaged him.....i still think he was high or just lost....i know how great a guitar player he was....when i was younger i just loved his playing and he was a great rocker...but garcia comes from a different universe...
I love how Pete NEVER stands still playing the guitar, even if he's just standing in

Of coures they were jacked to the gills, 1981 with Pete Townsend, Jerry still kills it, at least he's got a little kick in his step.

Bobby Fans Are People Too !
Credit Bobby Weir for keeping all of what timing and cue's of this jam there is, together.
Weir did things for so many years that went unnoticed but would've glaringly stood out (and sometimes did) if not for him.
I have always loved this band and more these days than ever.
The Grateful Dead, you're grately and deeply missed. Our love will truly not fade away.

I enjoyed this rare find. Love both Pete and The Grateful Dead. You can tell they're enjoying themselves too.
Pete may just also be keeping a lower profile since it is their show afterall. I hear him more after a few minutes into the song.

I like the intensity of the ending- Weir is in rare form on the vocals and the whole band is groovin'!
