  • sorry to ask but how much is this knife and where did your mom get it from? i can not find anywhere but on cold steel's website and its $87 on there. and by the way i love all of your reviews, they are always in depth reviews.

  • Looks like a mini meat cleaver.

  • do you shank ppl with these? lol

  • I wish we shared the same mother. All i get for Christmas is sweaters and mugs.

  • wat do u do for a job ?

  • It's really too big for EDC anyway. I'd probably go with the clip point, next size down. At some point a folder will get so big that one has to wonder what its advantage is over a fixed blade.

  • I bought this knife back in 2001/2002. It is a great option for defensive carry. My version does NOT have jimping however. Big downside on my version. I'm glad to see Cold Steel fixed this.

  • I think tanto, especially Benchmade's reverse tanto, is my favorite blade shape. The reverse tanto actually is great for edc because of the way it sweeps, unlike a standard tanto.

  • nutnfancy, whats your faviorite pocket knife for a cheap price?

  • @ORANGEJUICEMAN4LIFE Spyderco Tenacious

  • @ORANGEJUICEMAN4LIFE I think for a tactical high value the Rat 1,for a small knife the Victorinox Cadet and for a an EDC I think the Kershaw Skyline

  • do you like a cold steel, or a sog folding knife better???

  • NUTNFANCY doesn't advertise for CS it's just CS produces many extremely affordable blades. also they pretty much produce 5 of every type of blade you would ever want or need. Great work mr nutnfancy

  • Here in germany you can carry knives up to 12 cm as defence/edc/wahatever tools. My XL Voyager Tanto is 12,7 cm, but I don't give a shit about that and still carry it, it's a decent "pocket sword". No risk no fun.

  • Listen Mom, I want an EXTRA LARGE, not medium, Cold Steel Voyager. Specifically the TANTO variety. Not clip point, not bowie style. Tanto. Got it?

  • i LOVED this knife, i had to order it and the day i recieved it in the mail it was taken from me by the police when they searched me. They said they were looking for someone in a robbery and all i was doing was literally just walking down the street. How's that for luck.....(they said it was prohibited. I dont understand why because its not automatic and they didn't charge me with anything. o well gotta love the police sometimes)

  • After using my voyager for a year to chisel wood and hammer through sub-floor and even stab holes in sheet rock and pry with it (it's a work knife and I work the heck out of) I'd have to disagree about the lock strength. I have very very slight side to side play in the blade now but no up and down play at all. I don't baton firewood with it but I have batoned hardwood flooring with it several times. Mine is actually a 4" gunsite in VG-1. Maybe the steel is the difference?

  • Great knife i like how slim they made it and it would be perfect if there was a finger guard... one that dosen't make it too wide.

  • this knife has doubled in price since the change in steel from AUS 8 to VG-1

  • has anyone noticed that the clip point version of this knife has more of a curved handle? what is the logic of that?

    nice

    review

  • wicked blade.

  • Id agree, clip point, or modded drop point is a more capable blade shape than tanto

  • what the hell do u do with these blades?

  • Did you fart at 3:28?

  • i paid 100 for mine

  • @DesertEa9le rip, they usually go for 60-70

  • i see people disagree with my serrated preferance , yes its more difficult 2 sharpen but u dont need 2 sharpen it very much , and they dont suck , they do more damage than a straight edge , it works great on flesh and fiborious material , why do u think most steak knives are serrated ?? how much do u have to resharpen them? almost never!! opinions are like assholes , every1 has 1

  • @davinicus1727 Nice platoon referece with the ass hole quote

  • serration blades in my opinion look cool but how do u sharpen them they suck fully sharp blades are better. (how much was the tanto?)

  • i just got my XL Tanto Voyager (Fully Serrateted cuz it does more damage 4offense/defense) inthe Mail 2day!! i needed sumthin 2 take the place of my XL Vaquero which is on a Coldsteel Display Stand , overlooking my Discontinued Coldsteel Knife Collection, and i must say thanx2 Nutnfancy 4 helping me choose such a great knife with his great reveiws!! Im luvin it !! keep it up!!

  • Your mom's pretty cool bro.

  • Went ahead and bought it, have it in my hand right now, love it. thx for the review.

  • whats ur take on the reverse grip then on the reguler out the fruny grip

  • I wish it have a wave feature... it'd rock and roll hard if it did.

  • what would you pick the xl tanto or the vaquero grande.the vaquero just looks nasty!!!

  • Looks badass

  • hey nutn, if you could have any knife for CQB what would you go with?

  • just ordered one from amazom for 50 bucks! it was the last one in stock

  • I carry a semi-serrated 4-inch modified tanto, personally. Smith and Wesson CKTACS. It was on sale for $10, too. It's a little heavy, but I like it that way. Rubber grip ftw, as well.

  • i just looked at the cktacs thats a sick knife for ten bucks. think im gonna buy one

  • Rather have this or the recon 1 tanto? I have a serious dilemma here..haha.

  • recon 1 all the way....voyagers are not as tough by far.

  • @insomniac1122 Thanks.

  • I was dissapointed by mine cause i got the VG-1, and the blade retension is much stronger than that of the AUS8 version. but it's still a beast knife

  • Nutn you should review watches as well, I can picture you doin a good job.

  • Over 3 inches for a edc blade for me starts to get unpractical for my personal needs.

  • I love knives, but does anyone know if such a big folding knife is practical? I have my doubts, but I have a feeling I'll offend others if I voice them.

  • would you recomend this as the first knife for someone whos wanting to collect?

  • nope

  • I bought one before seeing your review and love it. I like the mods you've made and will do the same thing to mine.

Thank you for all of your reviews. I watched a bunch of them and like the fact you give your opinion. Keep up the great work.

  • I can carry a gun, but I can't carry this knife because of stupid Michigan laws.

  • @mojothemigo thats so stupid. what kind of law is that ? a gun but not a knife. bs.

  • @crazyphilly555 Lots of states are like that. It is stupid. Hopefully it will change this comming November when we elect a new governor and more second amendment friendly state politicians

  • @mojothemigo lol i know, its dumb cause guns are more dangerous

  • @mojothemigo haha in illinois i can pretty much buy any knife but no batons or tasers wtf

  • @mojothemigo In Germany you can carry nothing. No one hand open Knives and no fixed Knives with a Blade over 12cm. Guns... haha dont think about it !!

  • @AgentOrange1969 In Spain folders must have less than 11 centimeters to be legal and can be open assisted, but not automatic. British have the most restrictive laws about it

  • @mojothemigo i think if you can carry a gun you should be allowed to carry a fucking machete thats also a switchblade.

  • @shadowstormreviews This response is full of win :)

  • @shadowstormreviews hahaha the new cold steel voyager series of assisted opening machetes LMAO

  • @tamaplayer22 LOL that would be TNP worthy indeed

  • @mojothemigo

There is no law against this or even a katana in your trench coat. LOL

Unless you get a dick judge that wants to call it double edged...

  • @mojothemigo

There is no law against this or even a katana in your trench coat. LOL

Unless you get a dick judge that wants to call it double edged...

  • @TardyTheTurtleOG I think the law mentions it is any blade over 3", double edged, and nonefolder with "unlawful intent". Those words being key, and just about every cop and more importantly judge believe "unlawful intent" includes self defense as far as they see it. I think there is a little bit of leeway of knives over 3" only if you can give a reasonable argument that it is for EDC and not self defense. To scarry a knife is proof for a judge of self defense, visa vi "unlawful intent".

  • @mojothemigo

I recall not being able to carry any double edged blade, but its been a while...

There is also no harm in carrying a 5+ inch blade for cutting tasks and say a Spyderco Tasman SpyderEdge for self defense.

  • @mojothemigo

........nope?, i carry the voyager xl tanto and HAVE been stoped by police for an unlawful turn and when asked if i had any weapons i said a pistol and pocket knife. all i was told is do not reach for them. this was in montcalm county michigan not wayne or any detroit areas

  • @tubevideoguy762 Well, he didn't see it. Scroll down, I commented not too long ago how the blade is over 3" and with ill intent. I am currently carrying a knife a tiny bit over 3" and is a fantastic box cutter. It is going to be difficult to convince a cop and a judge that the 5 1/2" bowie or tanto made by a company that markets their knifes for the most part as defensive weapons and tests them on meat that it is just a nifty box cutter.

  • @mojothemigo

The exact wording of the Michigan criminal statue is "no blade in excess of 3 inches in length may be carried on one's person with criminal intent" I had that checked by my attorney and she said that in her 14 years of practicing law she's seen a large majority of illegal weapon possession charges dropped because there was no proof that the client planned on committing a crime with it. She also said that's why it's a good thing that the burden of proof is on the state.

  • @tubevideoguy762 Veeeeeeeeeeery interesting. Problem is, I am scared to have charges brought up at all. Also, has she come across a case of it having to be used? I guess a defense would be carrying that huge folder for random tasks, but luckily I had it on me for that creep that guy trying to kill me. Thank you for replying with that info, I thought for sure the size, style, and market advertising of a blade would be used to show intent.

  • @mojothemigo

Yeah she's only represented me in 1 misdemeanor case in which I accepted a guilty plea bargain to a less civil infraction charge and was fined $500 plus court cost but she has said that it's not "ill" intent that the state must prove beyond a reasonable doubt it's "criminal" intent so carrying any size blade you wouldn't ever be charged unless the state though they could prove you were about to stab or rob somebody with it. Which I wouldn't do. Likely you'd be detained and released

  • @mojothemigo Come to Europe and you could not carry a knife, either, lol

  • I've carried a ZT 0400ST everyday for the past year (have 2, 1 I'm keeping in good shape, kind of don't care about the other, which is the one I usually carry).

They cut decently from my experience and are very sharp, but I'm probably going to pick up a drop-point style blade (probably a Wilson RRF) as my tastes in blades has evolved slightly.

  • update the54 dollar one has aus6 steel

  • what is EDC?

  • o ffs.......... every day carry

  • got one of these.

    out of the box.

    cut my finger right away.

    these knives are mean beasties.

    5* nice vid, as usual.

  • I like the Tanto blades, I wonder what a Tanto-Bowie would look like

  • like a pirat sword! arggghh!

  • wheres the rum. lol

  • carry around a small spyderco for edc then have that bad boy in your pocket for the bad guys

  • wow. thanks for the history lesson jackass

  • thank you great samurai-san, for getting upset because americans use a certain blade shape . . .

  • No tantos were widely used and carried. Its a sharp stick for hitting people with, not a sacred religious artifact. Im sure your anime would say differently, try learning about Japanese culture from a book instead of a cartoon...

  • @brreed82

Actually the cartoons usually have more accurate history than that. ( I haven't seen many, but from what I HAVE seen...) He probably got his knowledge from movies and tv.

  • @ootdega um ok , when someone says "Tanto were ONLY used when a samurai was dishonhered or disgraced, they took their own like with thier Tanto", it shows a SERIOUS misunderstanding of the actual use of the blade. Then when i saw the amount of amine that he favorited and commented upon on , i naturally assumed that was the reason behind such a drastically false statement. If you want to argue the validity of cartoons as history, fine.....i'll stick to scholarly journals and primary sources.

  • I'm not arguing the validity of his claim, I'm just saying some of them are accurate. I haven't seen one that shows inaccurate use of a tanto. I'm not saying there aren't a ton of them that do; I've seen very little. The ones I have seen were based on history, not fiction. However, the fictional ones act like they're srz bzniz.

With the amount of anime that you have found in this guy's favorites, there's no doubt in my mind that he's just a misinformed, overenthusiastic, immature nerd.

  • I'll make sure to send you one of those so you can use it honarably...

  • Actually Tanto's were created because it wasn't polite to wear a full-sized Katana indoors.

  • and unwealdy... try cutting open a scroll with a katana... lol

  • weeaboo

  • @TheHighAce You are a idiot...That is all.

  • Comment removed

  • haha, I got a tenacious road rash on my knee, its a freakin gnarly scar.

  • I have seen these knives (4 inch tanto blade) used to chisel out concrete, pry up ceramic tile, cut up the carpet from an entire house, sharpen pencils, shave the edge of a hardwood floor and so on. The 3 guys I work with use these knives like this daily and they remain sharp where my Gerber won't even come close. Because of what I seen these knives do, I just ordered the Gunsite II from Cold Steel. I can't wait to get it. Great video by the way.

  • same knife tanto or clip point

  • nice...

  • Your mom is pretty awesome lol

  • im looking for a tanto blade thats at a good price

the Aegis Tanto is a little pricy but i might go for it

  • check out the SOG tanto it's like 70 bucks and it's amazingly well made and balanced. it ha S.A.T. which you know makes it super fucking sweet. s yeah check that out

  • the aegis tanto is a sog knife

  • This review pushed me over the edge, I was close to buying it anyway.

Got it in the mail today, and it's an awesome folder. Large, very light, extremely sharp, big broad blade.

After oiling the pivot it deploys well.

Love it already, it's my EDC for the foreseeable future.

  • Update on My 5 inch Tanto....it came pretty tight new....not fast deployment at all....no way to loosen the thing at the pivot because its pinned design wont allow it to be adjusted....we will see in time if it breaks in...it is very tight, so I assume that will be a while...just a thought as mine differs from the deployment ability from the one in this video...and mine is VG1, $57 from Nutn's favorite online store.

  • Nutnfacy costs me alot of cash....I just got this thing too.....XL Voyer Plain Tanto, picked up the Vaquero Grande too....they are going to stop making those....

  • the design of this knife looks like is based of a katana.

  • be careful when you wipe your blade, that you dont cut yourself... wow you crack me up man...

  • I love your neutralty nutnfancy, keep doing what you're doing man..

  • do a review on the gerber MLF 2.

  • Cold Steel knives are a great bang for the buck!

  • You could always jimp it yourself.

  • yeah, but theres a chance you could screw up and ruin your knife. lol

  • This guy has given me a steep learning curve on knives and steel and design.

I just got in to knives and am starting to get the bug.

    Tx man.

  • LOL iv been waiting for you to say mortal kombat, but still very nice vid.

  • CRKT HISSATSU FOLDER. If you don't mind.

  • If by "use" you mean in the utilitarian sense then I would have to agree. Big folders are limited in that respect. However, this review seems to focus on the use of the XL Voyager tanto for self defense purposes. I've owned nearly every mega folder produced in modern times and honestly, the well built ones perform great in that role.

  • yes buddy that knife is on its way to my house as we speek lol i ordered it and they r prolly the slowest ppl to get my blades

  • I have a Recon 1, And I really like it. it has a nice geomitry

  • I have one of these...

Wish i could find it though. :(

  • man that knife is $104 now

  • i found that the more knives u buy the less time youll spend with each, are you looking to use them or just collect them?

  • i got this knife. Great for the price.

  • I do not understand why people love tanto blades so much. I hear they work better for slashing things, but I find that hard to believe can someone xplain to me why a tanto point is better than let's say a spear pint.

  • they look cool

  • The reinforced tip makes it better for stabbing things. That's about it. For everyday stuff the spear point is superior. How often do you need to stab a car door?

  • skateboard tape the top of the knife where the jimping should be and it would provide some grip

  • make a review of a tomahawk

  • I've been carrying the 4" blade voyager tanto for around a decade now and love it..

I've been meaning to get the XL model ..Nice Review! Thanks 5*

  • I like how Coldsteel gets a catalog to you fast. I requested catalogs from Boker and Benchmade, and it took weeks to get to me. the benchmade catalog actually took almost 2 months. I requested a new CS catalog a little over a week ago, and I just got it yesterday. Anyway, I'm not a big fan of the tanto blade. I'd rather have something I'm more likely to actually use. Those clip point Voyagers look awesome though. If I'm ever in the market for a tanto folder the this is it though. Peace.

  • HEY! I have one of those! Same one. Wish I could find it though. Got packed when I moved and haven't seen it since.

  • lol portable penetration

  • lol ya. i got my portable penetration right here in my shorts...

  • HAHAHA!

  • Man, you must have some very large hands. I think that clip should be mounted further down the handle yet. My thum won't reach the stud with it placed where it's at now. I have to regrip my 5" gunstie to open it. Basicly the same knife with some addtional cosmetic features. I belive you can wear out the lock though. I wore out the liner lock on a scimitar and the ultra lock on a recon 1. They do stand by their warranty. I have new scimitar now. Keep up the good work on the reviews!

  • i would like to see you do a review on bark river knives!!

  • "car hoods, some refrigerators..." lol

    sweet vids dude

  • How do you upload 16 minute videos.

  • he is a beast

  • yes that is a perfect answer to this question.

man he either cut away some frames or messes around with quality or file type or maybe all of them.

  • Because he's a youtube partner.

  • Hey Nutnfancy, how do you feel about Kershaw's Tactical folders? I carry a 1/2 serrated 4 inch folder with spring assisted opening and sandpaper micarta inserts that's fantastic. Anodized aluminum frame and sharpens to a razor edge easily. I think it's 420J2 stainless steel.

  • I think the blade your talking about is the Blur model. I have one too! Look at his other videos, He did a review on it.

  • hm, i don't even bother to maintain the secondary tip in my sharpening - it's funny, because i don't care for it at all. I don't mind if it gets rounded, to me that's just becoming a little more like a spear point.

  • Is it legal to buy a ColdSteel knife and get it delivered to the UK? I want to go bring it when I go camping ^^. It's the Recon I and Recon Tanto.

    Thanks,

    VeXilliuM

  • Im annoyed you didnt tell us about that earlier. I wiped my blade down the other day and opened my finger up

  • Great review! The "a" in tanto is pronounced like "ah" though so it is more like 'tahn-toe'.

  • Awesome Nutn! I have the Gunsite, which is identical save for jimping on the blade spine and partial serrat.,(which totally rock). I love this knife! I also have the X2 Voyager w/plain edge, and I can hear it already, OMG, you're crazy, that thing is huge! But, I submit to you that this may be the most perfect EDC blade out there! It vanishes in the pocket, you forget it's there, and once you slice a sandwich in two, or cut heavy belting, ya won't go back! Try for month and tell me I'm wrong!

  • Awesome video!

  • awesome review!

  • very good knife

  • I don't like Cold Steel folders very much, except the Black Talon, but its price is...wow! Prefer Spyderco or Benchmade.I have a Recon Tanto and it is a good knife for the money and of course the tanto series knives are great.

  • another awsome vid. thanks for your time. Keep 'em comming!

  • cold steel hurray..if you loose it it dosent break the penny jar...

  • I like it im going to get one thanks

  • I meanm I have an injured hand (Oddly from a cold steel blade) and I would still never use an automatic...then again, I am sixteen, the need for a self-defense knife is very limited.

As for E.D.C, I use the "Yokote" or that secondary tip you showed for my various daily tasks and it has never failed, and I have sharpened it with lansky ceramic stones and it is still nice and sharp.

  • Awesome review! Keep them coming.

  • I had a cold steel recon, it broke and I sent it in to get fixed. The one I had was all sleek and made in Japan.. They sent me a big ol bulky Recon that said made in Taiwan. I'm over the cold steel~we need to buy American blades.. good vids..

  • I love cold steel 5/5 vid

  • Cool Knife and Cool Mom for getting it for you. I study Japanese Aikido and anytime we do any kind of weapons training we use a wooden Tanto. I really need to get one for my EDC knife.

    Great review, as usual.

  • Thats an "Americanized" tanto. It's just straight lines. The origional Japanese tanto is a lot more graceful and is nicer for the flowing cuts you do in Aikido. The American tanto has a sharp angle good for "snap cuts".

  • I've had a tanto for my EDC knife once, make sure your carrying something like a swiss army classic or a multitool for all your utility cutting tasks, the tanto doesn't take to utility cutting as well as other designs

  • Thank you for this tip, I couldn't decide whether I liked the tanto blade or the bowy (spelling?) style blade better for EDC. I now know what I'm getting.

  • I would prefer a tanto if I could, but, if I carry a tanto I carry a drop point or a bowie with me, just because, but I really love the penetration of a tanto.

  • bowie...fyi

  • great review, to me atleast one other great point for the tantos is your ability to pry with them, don't think it would work for the folder but just saying.

  • Hey man, this video is a great way to start out the day. Great review!

  • dont no if u watched my vid with my gunsite, well it snapped feathering some wood, but good news, cold steel replaced it,should be here today.(",) great vid, good to see you back with table top knife reveiws 5*

  • For the money, I think Cold Steel makes the best knives you can buy. Good review.

  • Nutnfancy, you have the best video's on youtube, and BY FAR, the best Gear reviews! I've changed my entire duty belt based on your mobility vs firepower video's. Keep it up man, I've learned a lot, and I appreciate your taking the time to make these vids.

  • What about the aspect of blade as an offhand defence? Great video.

  • Awesone knife, it's a mini sword.

  • Are you an FBI agent?

Can you demonstrate & review that Microwave gun they've got?

A review of flash grenades and throwing a couple of them would be cool too.

    you rock!

  • i'm waiting for the RPG clinic

  • now that would be the best video ever

"now see that pile of logs over there?

lets see how it fairs against this RPG-7!"

    BOOM

"as you can see it makes for great forest clearance"

  • What ?
