I'm excited about playing this on the 3DS. It'll be my first Metal gear solid. Anyone know if I should start with part 1? Will I not understand what's going on in Snake eater? Heard great thing about this game wanna enjoy it as much as possible.
I love how they bitch about the long cut scenes. Fuckin assholes at IGN dont appreciate F A N T A S T I C story telling. The Metal Gear franchise arent games, they're an EXPERIENCE!
@MiClLC Long cut scenes are NOT good story telling.
In a movie, dialogue and non verbal actions are the main (and usually only) meathods for telling a story.
In a game however, gameplay, level design, character design, weapon design, what the characters grunt in combat. That's not to say dialogue can't be used, it's just there's more you could use.
@MiClLC The first MW had an excellent campaign but that's beside the point. I enjoy the MGS series, but my major criticism of it is the length of cutscenes.
And if I had ADHD, Why did I make my argument that long? I'm simply making a point, now for the sake of being an adult, stop being a jackass.
@TheNamelessCharacter Video games aren't condemned to being one way. It's best to just sit back and go with what the game has going on instead of fighting it "oo why is this so long I wanna play" just see what the makers intended, if they want to tell me long stories I'll sit and go with it, provided they reward you with good gameplay and game time and the story is enjoyable I don't see the problem. That is the experience the maker intended. If it's good then great.
@mike12jrw1111113 I enjoyed this game and I'm not condemning it. I'm just saying that long cutscenes are not good story telling.
I simply wish story isn't sacrificed for gameplay or vice versa. I've seen excellent stories told with very few words and short cutscenes (see Silent Hill 2), so it's not impossible. I can understand your point, I simply don't agree. And I really don't that much for what the makers intended. Because, at the end of the day, what's there is there.
@TheNamelessCharacter Well I agree with that, the maker can find more clever ways to get the story told while holding a good balance between gameplay and cut scenes, sort of advancing the story while playing in different ways. I'm not sure myself on this game yet tho I haven't played it yet but I do understand what you're saying. Still from what I'm hearing I'm looking forward to the story
@TheNamelessCharacter It's really pointless to critisize MGS about it's long cutscenes, it's like critisizing GTA having an open world gameplay, it's just so pointless. Cutscenes and story telling is the main thing of MGS, people like MGS because of that. If you don't like it, well it's your taste but like I said it makes no sense critisizing it. If you think MGS as a simple shooter game, then you're all wrong, MGS is a story-based game.
@milban92 So bloody what? "story based game" doesn't mean cutscene heavy. I like MGS. And I like it's emphasis on story. But that doesn't mean I enjoy those cutscenes where an intermission is warrented.
And to say that I can't criticize something because of it being a sort of expected core is like saying I can't criticize the Boston Strangler's attitudes towards women. Just because it's an expected thing, that doesn't automatically make criticisms towards it invalid.
just played the 3ds demo of this!

He talks about how stealth-oriented the game is, and yet in every scene they show he's going in guns blazing...

I gave up on this game when I couldn't beat the old sniper (think his name was end or something). Can't wait to give it another go on the 3DS :)

TL:DR:
Long cutscenes in games = Lazy Story telling.
