I think it's pretty hilarious that a tv station can take a video from the web but people can't take the clip of that video being aired and put it on the web. Ain't that a bitch.
what an interesting story. i first heard about your story from 'nalts' and even went to your blog to read more about it. i was surprised it was back in '07. this really makes me angry that viacom is, to say the least, a bullying non-imaginative hypocritical jerk. *edited for pg13. i'm sure there are more similar stories floating around the web.
veeeery funny video, this very funny music channel called vh1 for young people cousin of channel mtv.this channel in english languaje its very good and very interesting. i lol this.phineas and ferb likes it.
Copyright infringement would have taken place if I had used actual elements from the Star Wars movies. I just used store-bought toys as props, did the effects on my own and even created the sounds (the lightsaber hum was an electric razor "shaving" the inside of a metal bowl, then played around with in Adobe Audition).
Seriously, how could Viacom take this down? The Star Wars video was made by HIM, not those Viacom assholes. Here's 3 words that almost every member of YouTube would like to say to Viacom:
@metalcom51 how dare they "borrow" this clip and use it for their own Christopher made the video not them, if they use any of my clips and they remove the original video or what ever they do ill sew
Viacom needs to take it's head out of it's ass! They should be sued for using your material! How dare they turn around and sue you for your own material?
It's OK for you to copy other people's videos without permission, BUT let someone copy your stuff, even it the source is their material and it's a copyright violation!!!
ha ha, just read about this - it is pretty funny - i'm glad you see the humourous side Chris.
What makes it even funnier is that you had done such an obvious parody of Star Wars - i wonder if Viacom were claiming copyright over that too?!
It must be the case that they didnt believe you were the creator of the original. With the anonymity of youtube, it probably is difficult to assess if you created the original or not.
Parodys are legal. It is when you directly copy a movie or something of the sort that it become plagierism (I know I spelled it wrong). I think it would be funny as hell if everyone who was featured on that show sued the hell out of Viacom. That sure as hell would teach them a lesson.
Well technically they could, since his video was meant for a high school election heck he could sue viacom and the host of web junck for the hell of it.
Actually Viacom had no right to take the clip down but the owner of the clip has no right to sue either. you need to copyright your work if you want to sue someone for it and most youtube videos are not copyrighted.
Viacom = Hypacrites. Dear Viacom, I'm watching your share price fall and am astonished how you can sacrifice reputation for a stupid lawsuit. The times are changing... why are you fighting it?
Seen the latest Viacom madness? Requesting the feds give them permission to *require* YouTube/Yahoo to give them the IP/User Data files for *all* videos on YouTube ? They want to know who watches what.. what ?!? Yes.. YouTube does *not* delete and has dozens of TERABYTES of this data stored away. I know what they should do though.. require that Viacom get enough 1G SD cards to hold it all and come to the YouTube data warehouse centers around the country and manually download all the files :D
On 2nd thought... Maybe we should resurrect The Headbangers Ball and Bang a few heads around at Viacom to knock some sense into those idiots! Now that would be a reality show I wouldn't mind seeing on MTV! Anyone out there actually old enough to remember that these channels actually played music videos 24/7! I want my MTV...I want my MTV...I want my MTV as the old mantra went. They actually call the Web Junk??? go figure...
Look at just what the Viacommies did to VH1, MTV, & CMT. Swallowed them up and turned them into crap. Any chance of seeing an actual video on any of these channels any more? Not a chance! Now thy are after the Youtubers/Google. Seem as if Viacom has a long history of taking what is good in life and turning it into sheer crap.
bass-ackwards is not just in the south sweetheart I used it the other day in fact lol awesome videos, sorry viacom was a bully to you, heard about you from nalts, even though I love Viacom, this was just mean... keep making videos sweetheart, you have what I don't have... talent so... i'm happy just commenting :D
I would just like to say that this video has been a large part of forming my thesis that YouTube has catalyzed the conflict between mass media corporations and the individual. I am glad you took the high road after the dust settled, and you are a defining case in the battle of digital copyright laws.
hate viacom. hate that youtube has like ZERO spine in this case. Google is the man though, thats gonna chew out viacom--they're huge, and stations love youtube. we're gonna win against these cocksuckers.
Very impressed with your "lay off Viacom" reaction after the drama, I'd agree because of how easy & futile such criticism is & that it takes away from the more specific, justified criticism when necessary.
As a parent of a child that attends the Rockingham County school system, I say keep doing what your doing! The children need someone to fight for them, so why not use lightsabers.
Next time, VH1, contact the creator before using their content and then sue THEM for inappropriate use. Shame on you. Chris Knight, this one's for you! Keep up making the videos!

Wouldn't Viacom and Christopher be infringing on the star wars copyrights?
Viacom is such a corporate bully, I couldn't believe they'd force someone to take down the content they stole from them. O_O

OH, and good work on the public relations Viacom, you've succeeded in irritating a vast section of a demographic with a large disposable income lol
