I tried to play up the conflict between the researchers just to make the distinctions between qualitative and quantative approaches clearer to my students, but I really do love both equally!I promise! :)
I created this video to help my students understand the benifits of BOTH approaches to research. It is not really about ADHD. I agree that neuroscience has made great contributions, but it is a mistake to dismiss the importance of infomation about what it is like to live with ADHD that comes from the individuals themselves. Kids and adults with ADHD have also made a great contribution by describing not only their symptoms, but also the strategies that they have used to address these symptoms.
The only thing a qualitative study about ADHD will ever be able to report is the SYMPTOMS. Without any quantitative significant correlations between these children the study is redundant. The field that is having the greatest impact on the lives of children who suffer ADHD is cognitive neuroscience. Thanks to quantitative research we know that there is a direct correlation between ADHD and working memory deficit.
