A true miracle anyone survived.

Try landing a jet without hydraulics is like... well like no other failure. It´s better to lose all engines and keep hydraulics, at least you can control the plane. Absolutely incredible how they managed to get it on the ground using only thrust. They did the very best they could under the circumstances. The complete loss of hydraulics is something that can never happen again, this accident was the cause that many safety procedures were upgraded.

acctually Turkis Airliner didn't tears apart in mid ear! that same carko door did blow apart because of malfunction and this time damage was much bigger than that 2 eyars ealrie accident, that all the wires at least it's electronic wires were cut off and plane was no longer flyabbel! pilots couldn't fly their airplane at all or almost at all, becaue damage was so big and still in the quite small area! that's why it crashes, not tearing apart, but wasn't any more flyabble!

@Georgeruby12 : recently an A380 of Qantas was crippled by an exploding engine at the wing. It's not that much about where the engines are but what structural damage they can do. In hindsight the extra valves in long hydraulic might be much more effective than displacing an engine. On the other hand, a rotor disc breaking up the same way at the wing could kill many people near the wing section by the flying shrapnel.

There is nothing wrong with the DC-10. I mean sure it has been involved with alot of crashes, but it really is a great airplane. The mechanics just took alot of shortcuts to make it more efficeint. Personally, my favorite airplane.

I don't view this one as a disaster. Rather, I view it as a triumph. Faced with a massive failure, the pilots, the firefighters, and, hell, the individual civilians, managed to stave off what could have been a 0-survivor crash.

@Scitech101 Well it was still a disaster in that 112 people died as a consequence of a major engine malfunction rendering the plane un-flyable. I agree it was heroic and super human of Denny Fitch and the cockpit crew to save the lives of the 180 people who survived, but the deaths of 112 people on what should have been a standard airline flight is still tragic for the families involved and must still be viewed as disasterous.

@terenas1986 Crash of the Concorde wasn't the fault of the manufacturer. It was the airline maintenance. Even though they say that the DC-10 has an average safety record, It did have quite a few poor design decisions.
