I had my wallet lifted last weekend. I was coming out of a nightclub just off Las Ramblas when I was approached by a group of black women posing as prostitutes. They put their arms around me but I shrugged them off and kept walking. A few minutes later I realised my wallet was gone. My passport was in it.

It's more complicated than that. For the police to prosecute in Barcelona, as in many other places, the tourist has to appear in court. Most of us are back in our own countries by then. And the punishments are too small. That's why pickpockets EVERYWHERE mostly target tourists. They know they will never have a court date.

@atheniandpa Here in Spain and I as far as I can see in all native european countries people have been brainwashed not say or do anything against immigrants, otherwise one is a racist. Most thefts are done by people whose origin is not spanish or catalan, nevermind if they are born here.

When I see tourists not holding their camera securley with a string attached to their body, or going around with a big map I advise them to be careful by not keeping their belongings in the back-pockets.

My friend knocked out a gypsy who was pickpocketing him, broken nose and all. I thought we were dead when the cops came storming in, we told them what happened and they said " I would steer clear of the streets, he has friends and family who may have been watching and may retaliate" then the unthinkable: cops dragged him to the side by his one leg while his head and body scraped the ground. I don't think the police have much love for them lol.

I never touched him. Read what I wrote. Anyone catching a pickpocketer pickpocketing them and hitting them is not an unthinkable reaction from almost any victim. Not the first time I've seen a confrontation with a pickpocketer and probably not the last. Now, the way the cops handled the piece of trash was not what I predicted at that particular moment.
