In Toronto, there've been cases of small independent cafes standing up to the likes of Starbucks, & winning.
A little place called Dooley's, in the Annex, was facing eviction after decades in the same location, because Starbucks came along & offered the landlord a huge increase in rent. But the locals mounted a vocal campaign, boycotting Starbucks & vowing never to set foot in the proposed new Starbucks. The whole city joined the campaign, & Starbucks backed down. Dooley's is still there.
