I'm going to buy me one of these older motorcycles tomorrow, Im actually going vintage in my life because all this new school vehicles are just a mess now a days.
@2694wr yup lol...missed shift....was trying to go from 2nd to 3rd but wasnt used to wearing riding boots and didnt actually shift...DOHHH....and i mix 32:1 which is great but a bit rich and causes me to foul plugs when i do slow trail riding and if i happen to stall out then i have to push start the bike or change the plug...when riding slow ill hold in the clutch and rev the bike up a bit to clean the plug off every now and then and that helps
@yamahait1 the suspension is a bit higher now so the plastics dont look so out of place but yes they do look a bit large...i had to put plastics from another bike because they dont make the proper plastics for 33 year old bikes anymore....and trust me ...if you saw this bike the way it was when i got it you wouldnt say it looks like crap....id like to see your 33 year old dirt bike....but luckily for me its my bike and i like it and youre opinion isnt important =)
@tehzade the side plastics and front number plate are 2002 YZ 125 plastics...they didnt fit stock...i had to make mounts...the front and rear fenders are 1986 YZ 125 fenders...the front fender fit stock but i had to chop down the rear fender and make my own holes
@tehzade not hard at all if you can weld...i just made small tabs with 1/8 plate and roughly lined them up where the holes on the new plastics are then welded them on then held the plastics on the frame where i wanted them and marked the holes on the tabs then i drilled and tapped them...i posted a link to pics on your page
@TASKEsrb dont quote me on this but it may be worth looking into....you may be able to just change the piston and cylinder and keep everything else...the piston is easy to get from an aftermarket manufacturer and you can probably find a cylinder on ebay
it is actually quite a bit diferent now but retains the frame and swingarm. the possibilities are limitless if you only retain the engine and transmission...but i have no need to go that far with it. its an awesome bike thats reliable and versatile and will last another 30 years
riding like what? thought i was riding it slow and taking it easy...not sure how that will cook the top end especially considering its a 78 and still on the original piston i dont think anything i can do to it will cook the top end
youre right phimister. i labeled it wrong when i put it up. its an mx which is the same frame motor and suspension as a dt but comes with a different gas tank pipe and no lights and was for offroad only
its not a dt converted to mx...i know this because i have the ownerships and user manual that came with it plus i know because it doesnt have any wiring harnesses for lights and the brake assembly plate didnt have a spot for a speedo cable and the pipe is the mx pipe which changes where the power band kicks in
@baxdoode all the plastics are new. the fenders are for a 1986 yz 125 and the front nuber plate and side plastics are for a 2002 yz 125 . if you have more questions just ask away =) the bike is very different now. i put front forks from a 1980 yz 125 and modded the swingarm so its as high as a fullsize bike now
i cant say ive modded the engine itself but i did change the sprocket rations but its to low now. stock was 14-49 and now im running 12-51. i think im going to go with 13-49. also i cut a hole in the top of the air box about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide to allow more airflow and i took the pipe off and cut out a small insert tube welded just inside where it bolts on which restricts exhaust flow.
opening the airbox and pipe will give HUGE improvements in power. I also took all the guts out of the muffler so all I have is the endcap on. this mod makes the bike alot louder so its up to you if you do it because the bike will not meet sound req. and will be illegal but also gives a very big increase in power. im guessing but the airbox pipe and muffler mod probably give a gain of several HP
nice old bike..i had a 1973 dt250 very nice bike and pretty dam fast had a new clutch and new crank bearings n stuff not a spot of rust on that bike.i traded it tho sadly.for a 1997 ninja250
Awesome bike Jason! quite the look with the modern plastics on that old school chassis and powerplant, wish i knew someone with one of these closer to me i'd love to see one in person! ~pat

Did you change the springs in the forks and the monoshock? If so what did you get. I've been trying to upgrade springs in my '80 DT 175 with no luck.
