what i understand from this phrase is that jim in his life was always acting according to what his conscience considered right.i think that this is the meaning of these words

yes,exactly.there's another one writen in greek,it says "η μουσα μου" which means "my muse".

and the words written on his grave are greek too,i mean the "κατα τον δαιμονα εαυτου".

it comes from ancient greece,although ancient greeks had no demons but 12 gods,so demons in ancient greece were some kind of little gods.

so,the words mean "by my demon-(god)"

like jim tries to say that he is there by his god...
