I love Star Wars, but to hell with remaking anything about it! Instead, take the story from where Return of the Jedi left off, or rather, quite sometime after... We need new heroes and enemies, better fighting scenes, and better acting & dialogue. I think Star Wars is more than overdue for a more serious tone. It should in many ways, rival the feel of LotR, in that I should be able to empathize with the characters and feel their situation. I felt more for Link in Zelda and doesn't even speak.
This is why Mr. Lucas is best passing on his legacy to someone else. As he's gotten older, the dialogue has gotten worse and worse (and so have the movies). You might be able to go back and "improve" all the special effects, but you'll never be able to cover the bad acting and cheesy dialogue, George!!
Yes some of the dialogue was silly, but I really enjoyed Revenge of the Sith. I hope they make a movie about how the Sith was formed. It would be nice to know the history of how the wars began.
A lot of the lines in the prequels could make even Meryl Streep quake with fear. Seriously, there is just no "right way" to say a lot of this crap. Everyone's trying their asses off, but the dialogue is just so wooden and useless that it makes the performances bad by default.
I admit that some of the dialogue is pretty crap and some of the acting is a bit suspect but it's not as bad as this video makes out. Some of these lines are alright. I think it's a great film. Especially towards the end when Dath Vader leads the army into the jedi temple. Quite powerful scenes
5:23 - 'Only a Sith deals in absolutes' - are you 'absolutely' sure?
6:28 - Anakin's jump was probably inspired by Obi-Wan's victory over Darth Maul, I wonder if Anakin ever asked his master what would happen if Maul severes his legs before he lands...
"That will never happen my young apprentice"
7:08 - I like her Mickey Mouse hairstyle (her hair & outfit is different in every scene)
I like the fact too that this vid points out the gross neglect of a mother who is giving birth to two babies who need her to survive...yet because of her heartbreak, she is unwilling to continue living. This is not much of a mother or a human being huh?
Why "From my point of view, the Jedi are evil?" What ever happened to make Anakin feel that way? He only betrayed the Jedi to knowingly turn to the "Dark Side" and an unnatural way of life to save Padme. Moments before that betrayal and immediately afterward, he acknowledged that the Jedi way of thinking was a selfless good. It's bad writing.
Hayden christensen is pretty bad. He has trouble making even the easiest of lines sound tolerable, so i think the writers had to dumb it down a bit. This movie was awesome though. It was 4 hours of pure entertainment and awesomeness.
Aside from the NOOOOO thing, there's one very odd scene in ROTS that REALLY took me out of the movie that had nothing to do with the piss-awful dialogue or any of the many cringe-worthy moments in the film. It's the scene where Mace is about to kill Palpatine and Anakin runs in, then he inexplicably SLOWS down for no reason. It's pretty hysterical, he's like meehh I'm in a hurry but on second thoughts no I'm not.
I dont find any of these bad for other movies maybe when they were talking about how much they love each other but all the rest are purely character driven and perfect for the characters to say And NONE of this is an acting fail.
i think the cheesy dialogue is kind of what made the Star Wars movies so memorable, at least from my childhood... I think what was unacceptable in the new ones and even the old ones, was always the acting... almost as if the actors were straining to take it seriously.
the story is much better if you think of it as a comedy and the emperor/palpatine is the main character. The actor playing him is good, and the character is a cool one.
This is the only film of the prequels where I actually liked anakin skywalker...you can tell he matured greatly from aotc, and has a more darker tone about him which gradually develops throughout the movie and makes him all the more convincing as darth vader when he finally is turned to the dark side. I think hayden christensen overall did a good job showing the turmoil of emotions that inflicted vader, the two most powerful I might add...love and hate, love for padme and hate for the jedi order
@Odor66 The problem with the prequels is that George made them because he had technology and technology alone! As a result of this the films were never properly written or panned out like 4 5 and 6; which George spent time writing. Ian Mcdiarmid, and Ewan McGregor, were the only real good actors in the films. Personally I think if George went back in time and made sure to make a solid story & screenplay then the prequels would be as good as the originals. Or better yet make the unmade sote.
Hayden Christensen did NOT do a good job acting in this movie as well as the second one. Ewan McGregor did a good job. Natalie Portman got really bad lines, so I feel sorry for her. The lightssaber fighting with Ewan & Hayden was good.
yeah, english is my second language and yet I chuckle with many of these lines, or just get depressed. I'm watching the whole series again with my GF and I kinda have to turn off my brain and enjoy being a kid again. The worst part is (since we decided to star from I to VI) to promisse her it's a good, envolving, if simple, story of redemption, with some cool badass characters if you see the whole picture (gets better with SOME EU). But pod racing and... *sigh* =\
Twice the pride.. Double the fall.. Quadruple the dullness.
After all this, it seems quite odd that Vader says this to Obi Wan:
"We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master."
Not exactly the kind of thing you'd say to a guy who turned you into a triple amputee and left you to toast - unless Vader ignited himself by letting out a fart.
@DiabolicHeart I would think that Vader believed that HE is now the master of the force since he was a master of it's dark side. Vader knew he could kill Obi Wan in the second showdown.
I'm glad you mentioned Shattered Glass in the video. I was quite surprised by Christensen's nuanced and clever performance in that one. It kind of served as a "what could have been" if he bothered to utilize that talent again. Sadly, he did this, Jumper, Awake, and Takers. Now he'll be lucky if he can sell cars.
"From my point of view, the Jedi are evil!" -worst line of all time and anybody with a hint of scriptwriting knowledge should know how exceedingly fucking stupid it sounds
Why not just have him say "The Jedi are evil!" shame on you Lucas
Hey, I love one of those lines.... "Good, Anakin, good... kill him" That was some awesome delivery, if it was anyone else saying it the line would have sucked.
I don't think any actors were to blame. If anyone doubts Hayden's acting abilities they should watch the tv show 'Higher Ground' with him in it. He pulls off whiny/angry kid well and in a couple eps he was really emotional. I think he probably was directed poorly in these movies. Bad direction + poor lines = seemingly poor performance.
is it me or can no one here see how fucking shit Hayden Christensen is?? the guy cannot act fullstop he bought everyone down to his level and ruined the whole film!! so shit.
Some of these lines are really horrible, but a lot of this is nitpicking. Palpatine was actually quite sinister in this movie, as was General Grievous. And Ewan McGregor did a good job, I thought. There was some pretty awful dialogue in the original trilogy as well.
@AKenjiB Heh yeah. I'm sure you've read how Ford and Fisher threw around George's awful lines for hours until they could come up with the right delivery to pull them off. And I know Mark Hamill takes a lot of crap, but he had to play the difficult role of straight man for the whole series and I thought his acting improved continuously until the climactic throne room showdown. Not to mention that he was only told of the huge plot twist in Empire the day of shooting (correct me if I'm wrong).
I heard that he Vader actually said something else during filming of empire strikes back and then Lucas got James Earl Jones to record the new line later and Hamill didn't find out until he saw the premiere. (But i also might be wrong with that)
@AKenjiB Actually, here is what I found out: Lucas told Hamill the correct line on the day, but told David Prowse to say, ''Obi Wan killed your father.'' so as to keep it a secret from everyone else. Hamill says that if he had known of the line longer in advance, he believes he would have played the scene differently.
@AKenjiB Yeah David Prowse said something else to Mark, and it wasn't until James Earl Jones recorded the line that David and Mark found out the truth iirc.
She's dying of a broken heart! AKenjiB (the up loader) is an idiot! You can criticize the dialogue but can't even critique the story line or have some insight? & WTF? Looping Anakin saying, "I hate you" over and over. Fuck man...
I never understood why the "So this is how liberty dies? With thunderous applause" line got so much hate. I agree there is a lot of bad diologue in this movie, but I always thought that line DID have relevance to the actual scene.
@AKenjiB I disagree with the part about him being more powerful the idea is that he believed he was more powerful because of what he did. A lot of nitpicking and personal preference but good video. 3.5/5
Ian McDiarid's lines were okay or at least his delivery is nice (he was one of the saving graces in the prequels), and I actually really liked Episode 3 as opposed to the other two, but yes Lucas never quite nailed writing dialouge. Maye that's why we quote the GOOD Star Wars lines so much. We don't want to remember lines like the "romantic" ones or the lines before/during the fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin.
Those two should receive the award for least believable screen couple ever. And I'm talking about Padme and Anakin, not The Emperor and Anakin. I also find it incredulous to believe that Padme would lose the will to live (and die because of that) even though she just gave birth to two children. That doesn't speak well for her character as the mother of two of the most important saviors of the galaxy. Basically, Padme was a horrible, stupid person living a facade of happiness.
Well I think it's the bad dialogue that results in the awful acting. I mean it would be kind of hard to say most of those lines and make them sound good.
Um, aside from the romantic scenes (which as a major Star Wars fan I can admit are pretty clunky and cliche) how was any of that really bad? Such as the first Grievous confrontation. You're telling me that and some of the other clips in there were worse than "Governor Tarkin. I recognized your foul stench the moment I was brought on board" or "You half-witted, scruffy looking nerf herder!"?
You'd think that having a cast made up of talents like Liam Neeson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Christopher Lee would mean the Star Wars prequels would put B-Movie acting away. You'd be wrong. Hayden is like some sort of anti-acting force. When he is around people, they automatically start sucking (Portman got hit the hardest with this).
@koook160 Finally, someone else who noted that! He did a great job there. It killed me that he didn't manage to do the same here. Maybe this role was just to big for him, or the dialogue was so awkward that he had no idea how to deliver the lines? lol
The whole Anakin Skywalker character was atrocious. None of the actors playing the main character had their heart in their part, and the script seemed as though it were written by fifth-graders, for all three movies.
Where does good dialogue exist in the whole Star Wars saga? There are other movies for it! I love it for the lightsaber duels, space battles and epic badass characters. In 18 years, I never expected them to be clever-dialogue movies.
AKenjiB is probably a starving african(-american) filth and watching the only main black character die in the movie broke his/her heart. It wasn't intended really, it was just a natural course of events - blacks are weak and useless so they die first. Next time you try to 'review' a movie that's a part of a larger saga and doesn't stand as a single motion picture think about the whole story. There are no holes in plot and logic, you just don't have a clue about Star Wars universe.
What? hahaha. First. I'm not black. Second, I don't remember crying about Sam Jackson's death. Third, calm down. It's just a movie. I'm sorry if I offended you by poking fun at Star Wars. hahaha. This comment made my day
They have been fighting for 20 minutes but it is not before anakin says that he thinks that the jedi are evil before obi-wan realizes that he is lost. Wtf?
i love star wars, but i have to say without the amazing music, it wouldve kinda been shitty and unemotional. like in the final battle between anikan and obiwan, the music provides the epicness or everything. the sword fighting is awesome, but the dialogue blows asshole. anakin: FROM MY POINT OF THE VIEW THE JEDI ARE EVIL. who the fuck says that.
Oh yeah because the first three movies had unmatched acting quality. The only two people to make it out of the original star wars movies; Harrison Ford, Lincoln Mercury, and Mark Hamill The Joker. And most people don't even know that.
I gotta say Ian McDiarmid as the Senator / Emperor is the only one who really seems to imbue the dialogue with the dignity it deserves by delivering it completely OTT. I wouldn't say he's scary, but he's a fun villain to watch. I especially love the moments when he seems to cream himself whenever he feels the force within Anakin XD. Plus, 3:58 "UUUUUUNNLIMITEEEED POOOOOOWEEEEEER!!!", that was pretty awesome. <8))
I seriously started cracking up when reading this. This really made my day. Thank you. This should be the highest rated comment. Better writing than any scene in the movie itself.
I agree all the way, except with the "liberty dies" quote. The line is actually pretty good and drives a strong message. Unless you put it as bad acting. I can agree if you meant the acting was bad.
Oh, and is the end of the video for humorous effect?
I get so sick of people bitching about the prequels. The funny thing is that no matter how much people piss and moan about them they still seem to watch them. I for one enjoyed the prequels, that's right I said I liked them.
Well I respect your opinion and I actually thought that Episode 3 was a semi-decent movie, but I'm confused by your comment. "they still seem to watch them." Well of course they watch them. They couldn't bitch if they never watched the movie. That's just stupid.
A lot of this is nitpicking. I'm not going to pretend all the writing is OK because there are plenty of shitty lines, but compared to the first two prequels this movie's dialogue is gold. Except for "Oh I don't think so" I thought McGregor did great in his delivery.
Lucas onlu uses actors to tell the story,. He doesn't involve them in the sytorytelling or allow them to change the characters. They have no input so they can't change the clunking dialogue. In essence, the talking scenes are only there to get to the action scenes.
@declannorton that was the number one reason why the prequels and the originals are so different. the originals were made when Lucas wasn't a "god of sci-fi." But all that power and fame went to his head and no one was brave enough to tell him something was wrong. Too many "yes men."
Some of these lines are not that bad: Only a sith deals in absolutes was, in my opinion, the best line of the movie and all the prequels. And "my little green friend" could have been bad but Ian McDermat makes it a good line.
to me, only a sith deals in absolutes doesn't really make sense. Isn't that line kind of an absolute in itself? Plus 5 minutes later, Obi Wan says "CHANCELLOR PALPATINE IS EVL!"
@AKenjiB It may be characterized as an "absolute" opinion but Obi-Wan said "deals in absolutes". Anakin gave him an ultimatum or a "deal" which is different from a mere opinion.

@demonman212
That's definitley possible. We'll have to get Morgan Freeman and have him say the lines and see how it sounds

KilldozerRocks 9 months ago 17
@KilldozerRocks
haha. It certainly is surprising considering how great the cast really is and how piss poor most of the acting is.
Seriously, though. Natalie Portman was HORRIBLE in this, yet in most of her other work she's great. It's strange.
AKenjiB 8 months ago
@AKenjiB No, it's not strange. It's George Lucas! He is a great visionary, but he is terrible for directing actors!
paulod27 7 months ago
@KilldozerRocks I won't deny Christensen's pathetic performances here, but have you seen Shattered Glass? He was surprisingly great in that film.
koook160 3 months ago
@koook160 Finally, someone else who noted that! He did a great job there. It killed me that he didn't manage to do the same here. Maybe this role was just to big for him, or the dialogue was so awkward that he had no idea how to deliver the lines? lol
ScarletKnight1025 3 months ago
@ScarletKnight1025 I agree.
koook160 3 months ago
The whole Anakin Skywalker character was atrocious. None of the actors playing the main character had their heart in their part, and the script seemed as though it were written by fifth-graders, for all three movies.
TFProleteriat 9 months ago
Where does good dialogue exist in the whole Star Wars saga? There are other movies for it! I love it for the lightsaber duels, space battles and epic badass characters. In 18 years, I never expected them to be clever-dialogue movies.

AKenjiB is probably a starving african(-american) filth and watching the only main black character die in the movie broke his/her heart. It wasn't intended really, it was just a natural course of events - blacks are weak and useless so they die first. Next time you try to 'review' a movie that's a part of a larger saga and doesn't stand as a single motion picture think about the whole story. There are no holes in plot and logic, you just don't have a clue about Star Wars universe.

i love star wars, but i have to say without the amazing music, it wouldve kinda been shitty and unemotional. like in the final battle between anikan and obiwan, the music provides the epicness or everything. the sword fighting is awesome, but the dialogue blows asshole. anakin: FROM MY POINT OF THE VIEW THE JEDI ARE EVIL. who the fuck says that.

Oh yeah because the first three movies had unmatched acting quality. The only two people to make it out of the original star wars movies; Harrison Ford, Lincoln Mercury, and Mark Hamill The Joker. And most people don't even know that.
CptSmokeAlot 10 months ago
I gotta say Ian McDiarmid as the Senator / Emperor is the only one who really seems to imbue the dialogue with the dignity it deserves by delivering it completely OTT. I wouldn't say he's scary, but he's a fun villain to watch. I especially love the moments when he seems to cream himself whenever he feels the force within Anakin XD. Plus, 3:58 "UUUUUUNNLIMITEEEED POOOOOOWEEEEEER!!!", that was pretty awesome. <8))

I don't think the Palpatine stuff is that bad. The rest though....wow.
KennethKaniffFromCT 11 months ago
I agree all the way, except with the "liberty dies" quote. The line is actually pretty good and drives a strong message. Unless you put it as bad acting. I can agree if you meant the acting was bad.
Oh, and is the end of the video for humorous effect?

LuthienofOssiriand 11 months ago
I get so sick of people bitching about the prequels. The funny thing is that no matter how much people piss and moan about them they still seem to watch them. I for one enjoyed the prequels, that's right I said I liked them.
watchinginaz 11 months ago
@watchinginaz
Well I respect your opinion and I actually thought that Episode 3 was a semi-decent movie, but I'm confused by your comment. "they still seem to watch them." Well of course they watch them. They couldn't bitch if they never watched the movie. That's just stupid.

janniechien 11 months ago
A lot of this is nitpicking. I'm not going to pretend all the writing is OK because there are plenty of shitty lines, but compared to the first two prequels this movie's dialogue is gold. Except for "Oh I don't think so" I thought McGregor did great in his delivery.
havlorech 11 months ago
You forgot this one
Palpatine: "I'm appointing you to be my personal representative on the Jedi Council"

1337Tazer 11 months ago
Lucas onlu uses actors to tell the story,. He doesn't involve them in the sytorytelling or allow them to change the characters. They have no input so they can't change the clunking dialogue. In essence, the talking scenes are only there to get to the action scenes.
declannorton 1 year ago
@declannorton that was the number one reason why the prequels and the originals are so different. the originals were made when Lucas wasn't a "god of sci-fi." But all that power and fame went to his head and no one was brave enough to tell him something was wrong. Too many "yes men."

karmacop911 1 year ago
Some of these lines are not that bad: Only a sith deals in absolutes was, in my opinion, the best line of the movie and all the prequels. And "my little green friend" could have been bad but Ian McDermat makes it a good line.
merrimac291 1 year ago
@merrimac291
to me, only a sith deals in absolutes doesn't really make sense. Isn't that line kind of an absolute in itself? Plus 5 minutes later, Obi Wan says "CHANCELLOR PALPATINE IS EVL!"
AKenjiB 1 year ago
@AKenjiB It may be characterized as an "absolute" opinion but Obi-Wan said "deals in absolutes". Anakin gave him an ultimatum or a "deal" which is different from a mere opinion.
