I like your idea using the caulking gun to secure the cakes. Ive used brickes in the past but this is an easier way to secure them. Also skyliter.com sells a black powder kit which workes very well for making quickmatch. fyi

@mrkentstate Don't worry about smothering the flame of a fuse, or any firework material for that matter, because all of the compositions contain oxygen in them to fuel the reaction. That's partly why fireworks are so dangerous, because it's almost impossible to "put out" a firework once it's lit.
