  • I just now discovered Doyle on Pandora radio and had to come to youtube to see if this man was real! Wow!

  • when i hear this guy i feel like i'm in one of those bars with low chairs, with random groups of people sitting around small tables only with drinks in front of them, and this guy playing in a corner with a band. magical isn't it?

  • I saw Doyle at Sims Music store in Columbia South Carolina. Most amazing Guitar player I have EVER seen. I've seen him twice now.

  • jesus fucking christ can he ever play that guitar!

  • At 0:37 he looks just like John Candy. Great, Great picker

  • A beautiful, musical player. Not to mention the astounding technique. Those harp-like harmonics are so difficult to execute. I tried several on a recent gig and got about a third of the notes to ring right. He makes it look too easy.

  • sometimes he looks like phillip seymour hoffman.

  • lekker hoor..

  • Doyle has inherited the mantle that Chet once owned....he's the Norman Rockwell of the guitar. He plays things the way they were meant to be played. His hand skills are simply dazzling, as are Tommy Emmanuel's. Don't worry about who is best, just love them for what they give us and how they inspire us.

  • The other CGPs (certified guitar pickers) are Steve Wariner, Jerry Reed, and John Knowles. All are awesome but none compare to Chet.

  • how can you forget the best of them all Tommy Emmanuel!!! He's better than Chet on his worst day

  • Totally agree

    TOMMY BLOWS THEM AWAY

  • Doyle is not a CGP althpigh he deserves to be. The four are: John Knowles, Jerry Reed, Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins

  • I've been a CGP for over 40 years and I completely disagree with that statement. Doyle blows them all away (objectively speaking). Granted, Chet and TE wrote my favorite pickin' tunes for sure, but this guy as far as skill and technique blows the doors off of any of them, hands down.

  • Tommy most certainly got the CGP from Chet . See Chets book me and my guitars.

  • Chet loved them all, he never thought of himself as better, a great humble genius.

  • Doyle is certainly a master of the guitar and I think that his gift comes from God. I haven't heard a player yet who comes closer to sounding like Chet Akins than Doyle. As far as I am concerned, Doyle, Tommy Emmanuel, cgp., and Richard Smith are the ultimate in players although there are many who are just as good. I have not heard them all; of course. I can't get enough of Mr. Dykes' fabulous playing. I am a guitar player too and I know fantastic when I hear it.

  • He is a monster picker! Only fault with him I have is the twangy sound . A little too harsh.

I think Gibson records better than a Taylor.

  • Doyle once told me his favorite chord was Gsus.

  • I saw Doyle for the first time at a concert he did at Calvary Temple Church in Kerrville last night for the first time. As one who's favorite musician was Chet Atkins even back in the days of 45's, I have to say, I think Doyle has him beat. I thouroughly enjoyed every song he played and bought 3 of his CD's to keep enjoying them. AND HE LOVES JESUS TO BOOT!

  • He played one at a clinic. Cocobolo 12 string, I think.

  • i wanna see him play a 12 string taylor t5

  • Doyle & Co. are such nice people.

  • Only just found Doyle on you tube what can you say, it doesn't get much better than this, just sit back close your eye's and listen, nuff said.

  • WooooooW amazing........this guy is he best!!!

  • This guy will be remembered for a loooong time. That song would make an athiest cry...

  • @Tehfurmanator - Being an Atheist I agree.

  • @Tehfurmanator i am a newborn athiest and his music makes me happy :-)

the beauty about music is that it's universal, it's just music, anyone can understand it, no matter what religion you embrace, what your culture is, the colour of your skinn, etc.

  • @Tehfurmanator Haha I'm an atheist and I cried after hearing this. Good Call.

  • @Tehfurmanator I'm not crying

  • @Tehfurmanator Nah dont think so..

  • tomanderson92 I had never heard of Doyle before seeing his videos on youtube. If there is a better rendition of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" I have never heard it !!!!!!!!!! I also agree with alynnkrhon he is great like Phil Keaggy !!!

  • Taylor doesn't endorse artists. That's right in their catalogue and on the site "We don't give away free guitars to promote our name"

  • my mistake

  • There's a Dole Dykes signature guitar ,I'll bet they slipped him a free be come on-

  • IMO, When sound is everything with tone I would pick taylor over a gibson or a martin and maybe over a matton. If you used a taylor walnut you will know why. They are laser cut and completely as accurate as anyone can get!

  • I will have to respectfully disagree with you on that point, but I will agree that Taylor guitars are outstanding.

And to keep on topic, Doyle is awesome.

  • I'd have to say the Martin DC-Aura directly conflicts with your statement, haha. I remember the day I bought mine and it was opened at the store, fresh from the box, somebody heard it, was surprised, and said something about how he thought "only Taylors could sound that nice."

point is, there's lots of good guitars out there, regardless of brand. =]

  • agreed, every brand has a model to suit every budget, from modest to " the sky's the limit"....

  • Taylor overpriced??? some and even probably many of them are overbudget for you, some are very expensive and are showpieces ( if you can afford..why not?) but a 310ce for example at about 1200.00 is a bargain compared to some 2000.00 guitars.

  • DAMN!!! I always forget how unbelievable doyle dykes is! Just for fun, check out any of those "slap the guitar" guys, don alder or trace bundy or erik mongrain, and then this dude!!! No one can TOUCH this guy, the burt bacharach of the guitar. I now understand why he's the last guy to get chet's "gentleman" award

  • I agree, where is the sound of WOOD here?

Also, to frilly and putting on airs.

  • sounds very jazzy, nice tho

  • i think its a cool sound..very merle travis..!

  • taylor guitars are top of the line.I think it has a great sound.

  • it not necessarily the guitar, more to do with doyle's special pickups that he uses, and the amp and mic he is using.

  • doyle likes that twangy piezo sound... dunno why, but it's his voice, and tone is part of any artist's voice

  • I've seen Doyle twice in person here in Shreveport, Louisiana at the James Burton

Guitar show & each time I left going...WHOA!

There's not a better acoustic player PERIOD!

  • He's skilled! But check out Andy Mckee, he's a really good and unique acoustic player.

  • Andy Mckee is amazing too, but it's a totally different style of music, so it's hard to compare who's "better." However, I think Doyle could play quicker than Andy on riffs fingerstyle any day of the week.

  • yeah, i didn't say Andy was better than Doyle, i just said that Andy is also a skilled and different acoustic player. And yes they have totally different styles....

  • You might like Richard Gilewitz too he's also very skilled.

  • Beautiful...

If there is a better living steel-string acoustic guitar player than Doyle, I do not know of him.

  • great player. a true joy to listen to.

  • What is the second piece he plays called? It's hauntingly beautiful and I wanna go out and buy it!

  • What A Friend We Have In Jesus

    Richard

  • Thanks for that Richard.

  • did I see him use his thumb to fret E6 ????

  • yeah! he use his thumb

  • i fuckin love my taylor to!!!

  • State of the art player. Doyle is a fantastic guitarist with great style and a great touch. Beautiful work.

  • Doyle uses everything a guitar has available - One fine picker and one fine example of God's handy work.

  • Definitely one of the best pickers. But if you want someone who gets EVERYTHING out of the guitar, look at Tommy Emmanuel. Not quite as much a virtuoso at fingerstyle as Doyle (though you'd be splitting hairs), Tommy uses the guitar as a drum, maraca, just to name a few. Doyle might be a little better at harmonics, though...shoot, now I'm lecturing, I'll stop...

  • this puke comes on my vid and tells me to learn some soul, which indicates that he thinks my tech side is alright, i take that as a compliment,he wants me to learn soul, and he's the one who'sa copycat. do your own stuff, thats soul

  • I'm a classical player and I think Doyle is great. He has great integrity for his art and one of the smoothist tone on steel string. Bravo!

  • steve who? , eddie who?? this is playing the guitar

  • Steve Who? Eddie Who, Fuck You!!

  • watch yur self yu fat pigfaced american, i've watched yur pukey vids and and all you do is copy vh's licks and pwerchord , you've never gotten past that, your problem is that outside of a vh format you canm't freeform , or can you ? prove us all wrong

  • I don't have to prove anything, I chose to play what I play, I play as a hobby only, I could play anything if I spent the time, I'm to busy making money - again I play as a hobby, I said what I said cause you mentioned Vai & Ed... Sorry but they can play

  • BTW I saw your vid... You should not be saying anything.......

  • i got you beat

  • thats kinda rude, you don't even know me

  • You don't know me either, so watch who you call a Fat pigfaced American, Nothing ruder than that BTW Ed & Vai can play, Guys like who you are watching now love those Guys, so watch you mouth & Get guitar lessons, You Fucked with the wrong guitar player... Good day.....

  • you've got vh chops and that is it, 14 yearolds on you tube do that shit, the only difference is you,ve got a big visa bill, or have a rich relative for yur gear, you need the lessons to bust outta the noise makin, chirps and harmonics to actually play a line like my vid, that'll tell me everthing

  • hahaha, Your fucking stupid.. All I want is the VH chops 14 year olds may play the notes but no feel, You have alot to learn, I'm done wasting my time with you, Look at my hits & stars compared to yours Nuff Said 200 thousand People & 11 Tribute band who made me offers can't all be wrong.. Oh yeah asshole, I'm self made & I don't even have credit card.. Don't need them.. get a life & get lessons, I stuped to your level. now I'm done..

  • your as stupid as you look! i give you props for copyin vh, but thats all your playing is limited and your freeform is from what i gather that too. wat the hell are you doin at 41 copyin vh, you should extend your interest in learning more music, but your safe in your lil werld, with attempting to garnish as many stars from your very constrained style. yawn, ppl have done that before.

  • doyle was a metal head at one point too,and totally different music styles.careful what you say.

  • Professional! Mfster!! Thank you!!!

    Victor.

    (Moscow)

  • I dont like seeing people say he is okay.myou are all haters! give the man some respect, you cant play that s#*%.

  • gah, the beginning little solo he had misses me off! i mean he should share his talent with SOMEONE! after he patted the guitar, i yelled "THATS BULLSHIT!"

  • which means?

  • tommy emmanuel does amazing harp harmonics on a few of his songs he gives a tutorial on youtube 2,somewhere over the rainbow is so flawless harmonics blend 2gether amazingly

  • Doyle is okay at doing the cascading harmonic technique. but if you want to watch the pros do it, watch Tommy Jones or Lenny Breau.

  • What is that harmonic technique he does called? It doesn't look like the normal way you play them.

  • They are basically artificial harmonics with (i think) two normal fretted notes in between each harmonic note. If you sift through the Tommy Emmanuel vids on youtube, theres one of him explaining how to execute this technique.

  • He calls it 'harping'. It's basically supposed to imitate sound of a harp. Look for some of his dvd's, he shows step by step how to do that.

  • Doyle is just great. Those Taylor guitars sound really good with the new electronics--you should play one live at a local music store. My problem is I can't afford one, but I do have a Baby Taylor Liberty.

  • Awesome musicianship. Reminders of Phil Keaggy

  • no also

  • I really couldn't care less if he was on a freaking Ibanez, that's some nice guitar playing there.

  • Nice job Doyle, I especially like your Christian songs. TMC

  • It's not the equiptment, it's how you use it jumboyd. why dont you prove that you dont PLAY like shit? post a vid of your own

  • Hey guys, why does this guy not buy a guitar that doesnt sound like shit?

  • If you knew anything at all you'd know that Doyle doesn't have to buy his guitars. People like Taylor pay him lots of money to play their guitars.

  • Ya... Bright sunny red guitars... man toylor must be laughing in a office somewhere

  • Rotfl, u idiot, Taylor guitars r one of the best guitars on this planet... And Doyle doesn't buy the guitars, they pay him to play on those...

  • Man if he cared more about tone. this would be much better. I got better tone micing my guitar with a 15 CPU dollar mic.

  • Taylor guitars are mass produced, machine made, overpriced guitars. Sorry , but it is true. And yes, I do own one Thank You

  • yeah their garbage!

    thats why you bought one.

  • yeah they are garbage!

    thats why you bought one!

suckered you right in did they?

  • yeah they did. I am going to sell it though. They have a great ad department don't they.

  • I agree that they're mass-produced and ridiculously over-priced! I've owned three and the 1st, which was a prototype back in '78 was easily the best!, though I do believe the man cares deeply about how is instruments play and sound regardless of how many 10's of thousands they're shelling out each year at this point.

  • As an addendum to that, they are still one of the finest sounding and playing accoustic guitars that money can buy. I still use my Taylor 814 more in the studio than any of my other guitars because it just simply sounds and records better!

  • thanks partner ,so very nice

  • Hey guys. I tabbed out "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" (the second song) a bit ago so if you'd like it just send me an e-mail. :)

    Jer1400@gmail.com

  • Gotta have it!!

  • hey, anyone can tell me if doyle uses his right pinky to do the tremelo or not? he is the first steel string guitarist who adopt this classical technique and does it so gd.!!! is he playing a 4 notes each time for the tremelo or only three? greatly appreciate if any expert here can help me with my questions. cheers

  • its 3 mate i have his TAB book. He does it opposite to the normal way, by this i mean he goes Index, middle, ring finger where as more often its ring, middle, index.

    <DR>

    hope this made sense

  • thx for that, i never even notice he was doing it this way, haha, he does just to gd, like magic.! neway, check out tommy emmanuel if u have not heard of him, he is another guitar genuis from australia.

  • Of course i've heard of tommy emmanuel!!!! i saw him live 2 months ago as a matter of fact. Another great player

  • Doyle Dykes is certainly one of the most amazing - really anyone featured by Taylor can say "I've made it." I saw a video a few weeks ago on Taylor's site of Kenny Loggins, also amazing :)

  • I have seen Doyle perform live a couple times. The guy is amazing. Thanks for the vid!

  • yow!

  • this is incredible!
