Wow, subject matter deeper than the lyrics imply. I often wonder about those days, and days even earlier. I can't help but wonder what life was like then, and how it might have been better. Just as long as you could have kept a distance from people like Jesse James I guess :)
Ron, the lyrics on this are fabulous! My mom listened too and she loved it! The music that you put with these words make the song come alive. We could picture the whole scene in our minds . . .

Good Job. I really like these minor key narratives. This reminds me a bit of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" that Robbie Robertson wrote when he was with The Band.
Hey Joe. Yes, it is a bit Decemberistsish... is that a word,,, haha. Did you know there are banjo strings made for D Tunning? A much heavier guage for the low D tuning... John Hartford used them. I will try them out and let you know. Later, -Ron
Yea, Jesse James and the Youngers get all the ink, but there were many of these folks around in those days. I'll need to check out that book you mention. Thanks, -Ron
Hi Ron, this is indeed an outstanding song. It comes of course to my favorites. Also the arrangement, vocal and instruments, sound - all in best quality and on a high level. The idea for the text is really interesting and actually in our times too. I love it very much.
boy ron, this was an ambitious project, writing wise as well as production and performance. it's obvious that you are serious about your songwriting. this must have taken a lot of thought and planning. so well executed. interesting all the way. five stars, chuck.
It took a while to write the lyrics the way I wanted them, but the music came together pretty quickly on t his one.
I do try to be organized, but it seldom works out that way. More often than not it just ends up being a trial an error process. I keep what works and discard what doesn't. Thanks Chuck. -Ron
Ron ... everything about this song is FABULOUS!! I love the little rapid strum and pause before 'if you get to heaven', it's a great melody, the vocals are great and the instruments sound fantastic. Loved it!
Thank you Ruby, and I had a hard time getting that little pause strum together... It was tricky to come out of it and still be in time with the beat. It took me a couple days to get it right :o) I hope Simon and Garfunkle were good :o) -Ron
Hey Winter, and I love that concertina. it is not so easy to handle though. You gotta push and pull the bellows correctly or it will sound awful. Talk to you later. -Ron

Hey Suze. I hear Dylan in this too now that you mention it. Maybe "Knocking on Heaven's Door" for example. Thanks for all your kind words and I do apprecaite them, Suze. -Ron
Hey Justin, and thanks very much for your comments, which are always very interesting to read.
Yes the lyrics are very much limerick style here, as I wanted it to be something folks might sing on the frontier.
I think of the Bealtes song "She's Leaving Home" as a great example of how effective a "story" can be told in song. It is a great way get something accross. Thanks, -Ron
What a fantastic song this is! Love the story, i mean the whole approach. And some really really fine melodies you have in there. And the orchestration, if thats the word, i mean it sounds awesome! More of this, please!
Hey Luke. I appreciate you comments. I wouldn't call what I do Orchestration... it is more like throw it on and hope it works... haha. Thanks again. -Ron
Thank you John. I have been playing around with a lot of "folk" instruments lately, and I'm just trying to find a place for them. I'll never be very good on any of them but I can use them for song parts. thanks, -Ron

Thank you, Duncanio. I've been hanging around you so long those "proper chords" of yours are begining to rub off on me... haha. You are on the home stretch on the exams now, must feel good :o) Talk again soon -Ron
i understand jessie james used to read the bible to his men in the evenings - "he was always quoting the bible at us." in contrast, the "wild bunch" were offered amnesty if they joined roosevelt's "rough riders" in cuba and when they - and others in the bad-lands - got together to discuss it; everyone got dunk and decided to hell with it and went back to thieving.
Hi Ron... what shall I say to a perfect song? I love everything of it, really. A wonderful meldody with phantastic chord changes, intelligent lyrics... I love the mandoline, the sound of the concertina and the choir part in the end. Your voice sounds great too. An exellent production!
