Everyone here that's just arguing or has argued about who's Scottish and who's not are just a bunch of idiots who don't understand the difference between ignorance and defense. When you defend something, you don't attack others about what you are defending. When you are ignorant, you attack all those who oppose your views. Ignorance is a very "American" concept and every self-proclaimed Scot on here has been just as American as everyone else here. Get over it! It's a video!
I find it interesting that everyone seems so intent on saying that you can't enjoy another culture without being from that culture. I am not of Scot decent that I am aware of and I have never lived in Scotland but i do like the culture (ie: music and folklore). Is it to be said that I am wrong to do so because I do not have Scot in my blood? I find it truly disturbing that ethnic groups say " You cannot like our stuff! You are not from here!" Does anyone else feel that way too?
I am half Scottish half French. I was born in France and lived there for 5/6 years. The rest of my life has been spent in Scotland, mostly in the Highlands. Growing up here and being involved in the culture makes you a Scot. Kinda just repeating what gaelic said, but nevermind, i'm stating my view. Cool video by the way hehe
(continued) just remember that we could very well be related, and you'd basically be hating someone from your own family that never did anything wrong to you. Also, what about us Americans who can't identify with American society and culture; "be proud of it anyway"? FUCK THAT! Here's the fuckin' truth; I'm 6'1, about 235, covered in tattoos and piercings; you wouldn't say that shit to my face, so don't say it on the computer. Now, let's enjoy the fucking music, huh?
"what about us Americans who can't identify with American society and culture"
Your american culture values and ideology is what you are. You frankly dont know what scottish culture is. Scottish culture is not wearing kilts, bagpipes etc. those are just traditions.
you are american whether you like it or not, you are not scottish, german or welsh or whatever you simply think you can choose to be.
And nobody on thi9s page has given any indication of anti Americanism.
I spent the first few years of my life speaking Scots Gaelic. A few years after my 5th birthday I learned English and Scottish. Though I was not born in Scotland the heart of being a Scot was instilled upon me at a very young age. I was taught how we changed the world in a very creative way. Now am I less a Scot? Slainte
Having scottish parents, does not make you a scot, niether does being born in scotland. To be scottish you must have been raised in scotland and grown up in scotland. This allows scotland to shape and build your personality and character. To be scottish you must have been assimilated by scottish- people, culture, community, dialect, philosophy, inward and outward perceptions, worldview, community, politics, ideology etc.
Wow, I came here to listen to some good pipes and I see all this bullshit about what is Scottish and what isn't... I'm an American of predominantly Scottish/Orcadian, Welsh, and German heritage and you know what? I'm vehemently proud of my heritage and I'm going to continue to be, and really, there's nothing ANYONE can do about that, you know why? Because you can't take away the simple and pure freedom of pride. You might hate us Americans, and that you have every right to, but (cont.)
I agree with ProphetWolf. Being a Scott is in your blood. Whether Scotts accept me or not is the furthest thing from my mind as I'm listening to the sound of bagpipes or celebrating my heritage. And having Scottish parents may not make you Scottish but it does make you of Scottish decent.

that's cool that you can actually trace your roots so far back as the time of Charlemagne. I know my first ancestors that came into America in the latter 1700's and that my last name derived of Norman origin.
I know what and who my family was at the time of the Norman Invasion and back to the time of Charlemagne as well. They probably knew each other. When you can speak intelligently and like a Scottish gentlemen, I will sit down and have a pint with you. I cross the pond frequently.

to say that americans dont have their own culture is so short sighted and ignorant it is truelly sad. you obviously have no clue what culture is and what defines culture, go to any part of europe and you will see how american you are.
Instead of celebrating a foreign heritage, why dont you start celebrating your actual heritage, your american one. Because that is what you are, you are an american, you are not scottish, and you would never be regarded as scottish by the scots.
Okay, young one. That which makes America such a diverse population is the celebration of our roots. You can take a Scotsman out of Scotland, but you cannot take Scotland and hundreds of years of tradition out of a family. I am Dalriadan too. I see you claim that as well. Well guess what, welcome to someone who knows exactly who they are. I do not need you to tell me how to celebrate my 'actual' heritage as you put it.. I can trace my families back to the time of Charlemagne, how about you?
Kinda wish people would stop bashing some Americans. I know many people with Scottish ancestry that try to keep the memories of Scotland alive. To make sure others remember the Scottish culture which will never die!
We scots are more than capable of keeping our own culture alive, we dont need american foreigners to do it for us.
There is nothing more irritating than an american wearing a kilt and pretending to be scottish whilst excusing his behaviour as celebrating his "scottish heritage".
I wish american would just be americans. they are not scottish and should stop intruding on scotlands identity.
There really isn't a such thing as an American culture(other then native Americans) being that it is a multiple mix of other cultures from all over the world but most commonly European. Some of us don't want to forget why our ancestors came here(Americas) and who they were then. There is nothing wrong with being open minded my friend and to create living history to teach others. You should appreciate that and feel honored.
"There really isn't a such thing as an American culture"
Garbage, I have been to america and it is NOT a mix of cultures. It is full of american culture. Those with scottish ancestors are NOT culturally scottish.
culture is more than tradition, it is ideology, values, inward and outward perceptions, beliefs, people, community, worldview, behavioural traits etc.
uh, yes America is filled with different culture and I would know more then you. Many Americans don't share the same inward and outward perceptions, beliefs, world views, and behavior traits. Yes of course America does have it's own cultures but many have originated from the old world. I never said that I or anyone else that has Scottish ancestry is culturally Scottish. Please pay attention.Thank you
This is where you young years do you no credit. My family earned the right to wear a kilt, and to own castles and land. Some of us still do. Don't spit on my Scottish heritage and I won't spit on yours. I am a related to 4 U.S. Presidents. What have you done for Scotland lately.
The scots are not defined as a race through anthropology or scots law and european statutue. there is no racial differance between a scot, englishman, irishman or german etc. The scots are seperated by culture, geography and community, you share none of those values because you are american
You know what, just because someone wasn't raised in scotland don't mean their not scottish. As long as they've got scottish blood in their vains that alone makes them scottish. And if it weren't for the scots coming 2 america then we wouldn't be a diverse country so get your head out of your rear and understand that.
Being born in Scotland does not make you scottish, nor does having scottish parents make you scottish. You can only be scottish if you were raised in scotland from an early age to adulthood. This allows scotland to change, form and mould your personality and charcter by scottish; culture, people, ideology, beliefs, sense of inward and outward perceptions, attitudes, worldview, kinship, community, behavioural traits, politics, as well as all of our weaknesses and such.
Would expect there are more of Scottish blood in USA now than Scotland, thanks to the English. My Mothers family was clan Little in the western highlands and run out by English around 1730's.

Haha, KanjiAlexander, are you the judge of what is "alright" in terms of musical expression?
It's simply a Scottish Festival were the proud people of a great country can show a bit of pride through there music and tradition. And that should be alright anywhere in the world.
Which reminds me I should practice my bagpipes soon or I'll forget everything I've learned. =D
That doesn't sit well... Bagpipes in Hawaii is alright. But.. Irish dancing with Bagpipes in Hawaii? Give me a break! The dancing doesn't even fit fir the pipes in the first place >_>
Bagpipes were in Ireland as long as they were in Scotland, for christs sake the Bagpipes in "Braveheart" for the music were actually irish bagpipes because they are more melodic.
In '75, My ship pulled into Edinburgh. I was a thirsty sailor. I walked into a bar, and my money was no good. But, there was always a drink in front of me. And those damned good people, brought me back to my ship. This was not the first time a Scott saved me!! And it wasn't the last. All I have is respect for the Scotts. =Stefan=
I didn't know only "experts" were allowed to play the pipes. You're doing a great job of making fun of those who play the pipes as a hobby. Good on you. PS: the sound quality on that video is fantastic, and I'm sure an excellent representation the actual band. Cheers!
While I agree it seems wierd watching him dance without a kilt, but keep in mind a true kilt costs a fortune. If they went out there wrapped in what many scots call "economy kilts" they'd be laughed out. But being the owner of an economy kilt I probably shouldn't talk.
Sorry, I've got plenty of CDs with it, but I'm not digitally advanced enough to have MP3 stuff. I'd have to go through them to check, but I think most of the time it's played pipe/s only.
Wow a guy Highland dancing. Be glad he's wearing pants they where nothing under their kilts, At Queen Mary a guy was competing and his kilt flew up 2 high. I prefer Atholl Highlanders over Rakes of Mallow any day!!
These guys aren't BW, just wearing their tartan. The dance tune is Rakes of Mallow. The guy is trying to do the sword dance to a strathspey tune, which in itself is interesting.
You know what?

Haha, KanjiAlexander, are you the judge of what is "alright" in terms of musical expression?
It's simply a Scottish Festival were the proud people of a great country can show a bit of pride through there music and tradition. And that should be alright anywhere in the world.
Which reminds me I should practice my bagpipes soon or I'll forget everything I've learned. =D

river danceand the pipes are allowed to travel in concert anywhere they choose.
I see some real ipodites in these commentaries..
but then, not everyone in the US is 1st and 2nd generation scotch/irish and german...

That doesn't sit well... Bagpipes in Hawaii is alright. But.. Irish dancing with Bagpipes in Hawaii? Give me a break! The dancing doesn't even fit fir the pipes in the first place >_>
KanjiAlexander 3 years ago

Cheers!

It's daft watching him dance no wearing a kilt!
califpat 4 years ago 3
no wearin a kilt? he was terrible as a stag, farmers would shoot him as a demeted one.
-x-
cronocide 4 years ago
While I agree it seems wierd watching him dance without a kilt, but keep in mind a true kilt costs a fortune. If they went out there wrapped in what many scots call "economy kilts" they'd be laughed out. But being the owner of an economy kilt I probably shouldn't talk.

Just stumbled across this, so in case nobody answered you, it's "Loudon's Bonny Woods and Braes".
oldpiobair 4 years ago
thank you if u have it on mp3 with drums can u send it to me please thankyou
HawkLadyLauren 4 years ago
Sorry, I've got plenty of CDs with it, but I'm not digitally advanced enough to have MP3 stuff. I'd have to go through them to check, but I think most of the time it's played pipe/s only.

Wow a guy Highland dancing. Be glad he's wearing pants they where nothing under their kilts, At Queen Mary a guy was competing and his kilt flew up 2 high. I prefer Atholl Highlanders over Rakes of Mallow any day!!
piperchic4 4 years ago
i am a scot but would rather wear a horsehair shirt than blackwatch tartan.
Germungus 4 years ago 2
this would be a lot cooler provided the dancer had the proper attire.
TNTennant 5 years ago
These guys aren't BW, just wearing their tartan. The dance tune is Rakes of Mallow. The guy is trying to do the sword dance to a strathspey tune, which in itself is interesting.
bppiper 5 years ago 2
Thanks for the information. I don't much about it at all. Was recorded at Kapiolani Park in Hawai'i.
ptosis 5 years ago
I have no idea. But the people playing are Black Watch. But yeah, that's the one they always play when entering.
