Canada is part of the continent "North America", which along with "South America" makes... America. The "USA" or "United States of America" is another country in North America. So tbattl is not incorrect about the 'american' part of it.

in my country, I was taught that there were 5 continents: Europe, Asia, Oceania(australia, new zealand and those little islands), Africa and AMERICA(which is divided in North, central and South, but it's pretty much the same big island, same continent). there is eartern Europe, western Europe and together they are Europe not the Europes. not saying they teach it wrong here, i just think it makes more sense with 5. ACcording to Us, australia is a continent... what is that?
