When I was a kid, the Navy would stop foreign ships from pirate fishing off our coasts...Spain, USA, all of them would get taken in to port for criminal prosecution..now? I don't know...
Global warming is the main reason why sea fisheries around the world are being depleted rapidly. The only solution is reducing the energy consumption, now!!!
@TheJoshwallace no... its because of over fishing. its been like that way before "global warming" was even a thought. the only solution is to stop fishing or set huge restrictions that only benefits the big boats (since all the big boat owners sit on the fisheries management board). reduce energy consumption? you can over fish on a full or half full tank of fuel.
what do the fishermen of Newfoundland expect? Even if the government had let them fish, there was nothing left to fish. They called a moratorium in 1992 in hopes they hadn't completely caused the fish populations to crash... the populations are only 2% of what they were in the peaks. The fishermen overfished to the point that there was nothing left.
Lets talk about this. The Newfoundlanders were a portion of the problem. Mostly foreigners. However, the Government is what destroyed the stocks. A man named Adolf Nelson created the worlds largest cod fish hatchery in the world on Dildo Island here in Newfoundland. They produced millions of fish in a few years, and their numbers were rising. Then, the government shut it down. Nelson ran it for a year from pocket, but he ran out of funds. We need another Nelson to save our tradition!
Many people assume this song was written by Séan McCann of Great Big Sea, but it was actually written by his father, Ed McCann of Gull Island, Conception Bay, NL. Thanks for sharing.

I've always wished that GBS had made a video for this song, although it probably wouldn't have been as good as the one in my head.

Look at it now. Commercial Cod fishing is still happening. I live in BC now and I can get Atlantic Cod.
But the small boat fishermen cannot fish anymore.
The guy with the biggest boat gets to do it. How does this make sense?

@nvalchuk overfishing was caused by the foreign fishing fleets not by newfoundlanders themselves.....
