@MightyJustas First of all, we would appreciate it if you refrained from using profanity on our video, as we have a wide variety of people watching our videos. Secondly, although you may not have been interested in seeing each bubble freeze in slow motion, quite a few people are/were. By showing it in both real time, and in slow motion, we tried to give different looks at the process of the bubble freezing and crystallizing.
I really appreciated the slowdowns, myself! I was amazed. I could really appreciate the beauty of the freezing with it slowed down. I really want to do this myself sometime. :)
@kinglynx Filming a floating bubble while trying to zoom in on it at the same time is quite difficult. Doing that all while wearing fairly heavy gloves because it's more than 30 degrees below zero makes it even more difficult. We tried to get the best footage we could.
You guys are AWesome... Jeff was teaching us about this stuff in my classroom (how fast the speeds of wind can be And alot more fun things.) it was fun. =)

It's so nice to see our tax-payer money being wasted through government sponsoring to be waste by some scientist who decide to make frozen bubbles as RESEARCH! FTW
@jehcrazyjehcmy A couple things in response to that statement. First of all, the Mount Washington Observatory is a private, non-profit, member supported science, research, and education organization. We are funded mainly through our nearly 4,000 members, as well as corporate sponsors such as Eastern Mountain Sports and Subaru, and lastly through research grant money. We are not directly funded by taxpayer money, and we are not part of the National Weather Service.
@jehcrazyjehcmy Over the years, some of our research grants have been funded by taxpayer money, including a couple that we are working on right now. However, I assure you that the time spent making the video you see here was not billed to any of those grants. Only very specific tasks that we work on are billed to those grants, and making frozen bubbles most certainly does not fall under any of those tasks.
@jehcrazyjehcmy Lastly, keep in mind that the crew that works on the summit for the Observatory not only works there, but also lives there for one week at at time. Because of this, we aren't working 24 hours a day, and have some free time to do fun things like this.
I hope that clears things up for you. For more information about our non-profit organization, please visit our website.
But watching the bubble getting frozen is grand! It is my lifelong dream to visit Mt Washington. So you're lucky to spend your times on the top of New England mountains.
This was awesome! Thanks for the great video! (Just ignore the trolls who think you have to be Steven Spielberg to make a video for Youtube.) You guys did a great job :D
To clarify to anyone who does not use Imperial, this is around -30 to -35C. Shame, I could have done this outside when it was -40C (-40F) outside a week ago. Dog would have had a blast.
@pipster06 Make sure you are viewing the video in full 1080 HD. The camera used to shoot the video is a Sony Handycam HDR-FX7. While this is not a high end camera by any means, it is most certainly not a low end camera either. It shoots in full 1080i resolution on DV tapes.
Additionally, keep in mind that the crew that works on Mount Washington is a group of mostly scientists. They are not cameramen, and are certainly not film makers.
@pipster06 Lastly, I am sure you can imagine how difficult it is to shoot video and zoom in on a floating bubble, all while wearing heavy gloves to combat the extreme cold.
@jimmyzzzzzaaaaa First of all, this isn't just water, it's a mixture of dish soap, sugar, and water. Secondly, the point of the video isn't simply that "water freezes when it's cold", it's the fact that we were able to actually watch a soap bubble crystallize in mid-air. This is not something you can see everyday, and is also why we slowed down the video, so viewers could clearly see that crystallization happening.
@MWOObserver Frankly, I agree with the other guy. I understand that you guys aren't film makers, but the rest of us are tired of hearing the same music loops over and over again.
@gaaratoast No one is forcing you to watch the video you know. If you don't like the music, don't watch the video, simply as that. There's also a button that you can click to mute the music.
Please excuse thatGuy. He is under the impression that we are still on 4chan where it is socially acceptable to judge things by their minor, insignificant flaws. I for one just wonder how much clothing you had to wear while outside.
@Ricktard1010 Thanks for the encouraging words. In conditions like we had when this video was shot, we make sure to cover all exposed skin. This means wearing a face mask and goggle, in addition to wearing several layers of technical outerwear, supplied to us by our official outfitter, Eastern Mountain Sports (sorry for the shameless plug!).
@MWOObserver you have to expect these comments, it's YouTube after all. Just because some like to complain doesn't mean most don't like it. It's all part of the process.
@irepeatyou Thanks for your comment. It's just amazing how people on the internet will try so hard to find something negative in everything they comment on.
The recipe that I made was...Mountain Top Bubble Mixture: 3 Tsp of dish soap,
1 Tsp of sugar, 1-2 Tsp of hot water. Mix gently so as not to make bubbles in the solution. The soap and water create the bubble but the dissolved sugar int he solution acts as a catalyst for the crystals to form as it freezes. To see more picture of the bubbles you can read my comment on our website. Click on the observer comments heading on the right hand side of the page and look for Jan 24, 2011 comment
I use to live in Nashua, and went to Mt. Washington once, during the summer, and it's really chilly up there... regardless of temp... pretty damn cool video too
I did the same at my home! Really neat. Just showed this to some afterschool program students and they are going to go home and try it (under parent supervision!)
This is incredibly interesting and whimsical. I love you for even thinking of doing this. I love making bubbles but I usually don't make them in winter because they never lasted very long. Now I realize I was just a quitter! Must do something about that. And I'd love your recipe for bubble juice.
