I think that besides a massacre in Crete of partisans and civilians, the fallschirmjagers had a reputation of fearless, honor, duty and sacrifice... not like these totenkoft SS/SD butchers
Caine did restrained anger building to disgust about as well as it could be done: few did it better he played it large and never a hint of overacting or even acting with somebody like Pacino who is very good but always a bit hammy, a tad, whereas Caine is just always totally believable
This scene was shot in Finnish Lapland, at Rovaniemi railway station, using old Finnish Railway (VR) coaches and a steam locomotive. Sir Michael Caine has filmed in Finland earlier, too, on "Billion Dollar Brain".
I'm so happy for this film. I'm half German, currently serving in the British Army, and no one understands how much the Wehrmacht hated the SS. My grandfather served in the Wehrmacht as a proud soldier who fought for his homeland, he never had any qualms with the Jews and detested Hitler. He was also an Oberst. He wrote home a lot to my grandmother telling of the horrors he saw, and somehow he managed to get it through the censoring. Dunno how!
@circesprophecy I'm also half German and serving in the British TA. My grandad was also a Wehrmacht officer, he fought in Norway and Russia and got shot about 5 times but survived, although he had a shrapnel injury and could never fully raise his left arm. He won many war medals, I have them all now :D
@circesprophecy someday there will be a movie about german armymen who fought for there homeland but did hate hitler and his SS and what they were doing. amazing story.

People yell about Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro and Al Pacino - but Michael Caine is still and was one of the best and finest working actors of our generation. I need to revisit this movie as well - my father, who fought in WW2 showed me this as a girl. Tis a distant memory but will be rewatching it this weekend for sure! Thank you for this clip!
One of my favorite war movies, although a bit old compared to the rest of my favs. I really liked to see the germans portraid in a heroic way something rare in the ww2 movies (don't get me wrong tho I don't support nazis or something XD) Just for a change we can see there were good everyday people even in an army that did all those horrible things. I really liked the characters of Col. Steiner and Devlin. I also loved the theme of the ending titles.
You're right. The characters are hard to forget also. Even Robert Duvall as Colonel Radl when at the end is about to be executed and sends his assistant to home (the blond haired guy).
And other minor characters like the one who plays the piano, also admiral Canaris and the one who drives the boat, a black haired guy which name I don't remember. They are all human beings as the movie portrays.
@invitriol123, Not so much jew blockbuster propaganda here in this movie because this scene doesn't only show jews as poor victims but shows that there were good german soldiers. Another movies make even Luftwaffe personnel look like cold blooded killer beasts, this movie doesn't.
I'm no genius but I would think the Jews copped a pretty bad time over that era in Europes History! I mean, just a guess but I would think they AT THAT TIME were worthy of sympathy for what they experienced and went through.
The Jews "copped a pretty bad time over that era" due in large part to their own behavior and in what they did to Germany during the inter war years, like bank speculation / runaway inflation, funding and actively helping the Bolshevik and Communist movements, promoting a derogatory culture through their 'Cabarets' in which many young poor German girls were ruthlessly exploited, etc.
@invitriol123 I know, but don't try to tell me that every single woman or child belonging to that group was as an evil corruptor blood-sucker capitalist neo-communist cabaret owner banker, that's stupid... there were poor people from the villages too, so to the people from the East, normal people from Ukraine and Poland suffered by the "nazi" brutality just for being slavic.
Mmmm, yes it was a bad time and I'm sure you have some points - but it does not justify the MURDER of women and children on mass in the most horrible way possible. The history of man kind is spattered with horrible deads - things we as human beings should be ashamed of. This is one of them. Causing 'runaway inflation' does not add up to being gassed to death. Just my opinion of course!
Excellent accuracy -- even showing a Stug III being transported back to Germany for repairs. Strange though that the railway security personnel did not have their Mauser 98K's already chambered.
I watched this movie more than a few times when it came out in the late 70's. I was a child then, and by now I had forgotten how unsettling and confusing it is to see supposedly German SS officers and personnel speaking English with British accents. Makes it kind'a difficult to suspend disbelief. That's my only complaint about this movie, which is quite good. However, I recommend the book, which contains a more fully developed version of the story, as tends to happen. Thanks for posting this!
You know, most other epic war movies that came out when I was a kid, (like "A Bridge Too Far" and "The Longest Day"), were excellent too. They actually went through the trouble of having the actors portraying German soldiers speak German, and they used subtitles. This made them better movies and much more believable. I wish they would have done the same with this movie, (which was still very good), because it would have made it one of the classics. American accents would have ruined everything!
@armyveteran101st, german characters speaking german with subtitles it's the most realistic way. But if the movie would have been made in German, Michael Caine would not be there and many other british actors, even the american Robert Duvall would be missed. :(
Actually there is a lot of movies containing both german, british and american actor with the most famous being The Longest Day and as far as my knowledge goes John Wayne isnt german :)
@armyveteran101st Michael Caine was in A Bridge Too Far, wasn't he? A Radio Operator of some sort, I believe. Yeah! He was! I remember!! What a brilliant guy he is.
@RADIOWebcast yes, he was. He played the role of one of the senior British ground commanders that were tasked to link up with the airborne divisions. He is a fantastic actor, and I have yet to see a bad movie with him in it. He's getting up there in age, but he is one of cinema's classic actors by far.
Indeed, the book is better by a country mile. The way Jack Higgins writes himself into the beginning when he discovers the grave of Steiner and his men would have been very interesting. And how would people in England have reacted to Harvey Preston the British Freikorps SS man?
Yep. I don't why people hate Jews,Blacks,Mexicans,Whites,it's rather silly to hate a WHOLE group of people who have no more control over what color or ethnic group they are born in than one has over the weather.
@Klottelitsch , it's okay man. It wasn't your fault, many germans didn't know what was really happening and the ones who knew, the good ones... had no option but keep doing their work.
thank you, I know it was not my fault but if more honorable people like this fictual officer Steiner had argued as seen in this movie, holocaust maybe did not happen as it happened.
This here is my favourite scene of any wartime movie
@Klottelitsch , You had to be there to understand. In the US we had our own conservatives like the the Longs of Lousianna. with the depresssion and hyperinflation and without a strong democratic history Germany stumbled into dictatorship. Once the bad guys get in control, its hard to root them out. There is no way to say your sorry to 7 millon dead. Instead, take care of the living. Tell all the truth of what happened. Germany is a good friend to the world. We all remember..
Oh yes its very important to show that there were brave and honorable german officers that HATED SS Guys as this Obersturmbannfuehrer who wants to murder the Jews GREAT PERFORMANCE and GREAT SPEACH of Michael Caine (STEINER!!)
The sentry who first warns Steiner to stay on the train and then snaps off a sharp salute, does so when he sees his Knight's Cross. However, being awarded the prestigious award didn't necessarily indicate Steiner was an officer, so why he saluted is a bit of a mystery.
The German armed forces, like the US and the UK armed forces, granted those where awarded the highest medal for valour (Medal of Honour, Victoria Cross) the right to be saluted first regardless of rank. So in theory, a US four star general (or even the president for that fact) should salute a private who was awarded the Medal of Honor first when the ribbon is recognized.
I think this may be similar all around the world in fact. Several months ago, a Dutch captain from the Royal Commandos was awarded the Military William Order for "performing excellent acts of Bravery, Leadership and Loyalty in battle" in Afghanistan. One of the things that was said was that he also now had the honour of being saluted first, even by officers that are ranked higher than him.
The special edition is worth watching with many extra scenes iincluding Canaris meeting with Himmler at the beginning and an explanation to Radls incurable illness.
This certainly is a great, but unfortunately, overlooked war movie. I was told by my old boss once about some of the differences from the book, one of them being that the U.S. rangers were originally British commandos, and Robert Duvall's character shoots himself instead of being knocked off by a firing squad. Michael Caine is great in this scene, that's why I faved this. I also just love anything WWII in general.
Yeah, a classic. Other british actors who played germans very well are Richard Burton and Robert Shaw. But Ed Harris, who is american, played a mean one in Enemy at the Gates.
Also, I noticed that nazis in German war movies aren't so "badass" as in British or American movies... they look more average. (physically)
ed harris was very good indeed, i didn't feel he was trying to be german but more natural as in by not using a german accent but when he toyed with sacha you knew the boy was going to die and it was very powerful. an interesting observation but then again its probably a propaganda thing to make the germans look and seem inferior to those that would eventually defeat them (allies). band of brothers was more balanced, the german soldiers were alot more menacing than your other typical ww2 film
Yep, and it's not surprising, Anglo-Saxon heritage, geographical proximity and somewhat common culture...plus, the English were always very keen to imitate Germans in movies or TV, whether it's for comedic or dramatic purpose...have you seen the Fry and Laurie interrogation sketch ? What makes Michael Caine's performance oddly brilliant is that he doesn't even have a German accent (as it is usally the solution in these instances), he does it all form posture, emotion and manneurisms...genius.
Hmmm... the british heritage is kind of different to german... Specially for those germans from Bavaria, who are catholic, traditionalists and beer-loving people.
Anyway, Michael Caine excells in this movie by his way of acting.
I don't know of any SS Generals operating around Warsaw at the time of the Jewish rebellion who had the Knight's Cross. I know that Krüger got it later after he went to the front.
Oscar Dirlewanger was the SS General in command of the raising of the Ghetto. He was commander of the 36th SS Division that bore his name. The 36th SS was made up of criminals. He was awarded the Knight's Cross for his reduction of the Ghetto. Dirlewanger was accused of being a pedophile and a homosexual. Those charges may have been allied propaganda, but there seems to have been some basis for them. Hitler awarding the Knight's Cross to Dirlewanger didn't sit well with anyone except Hitler.
Are you sure? I thought that the Warsaw Ghetto action was commanded first by Sammern and later by Stroop and that it was Stroop who razed the Ghetto. As for Dr. Dirlewanger, I think that the Reich govt actually jailed him in a KZ because of his relationship with an underage girl. Dirlewanger was an appaling individual on many levels but he did have physical courage; he was apparently wounded 12 times during the course of WW2.
Dirlewanger was in overall command of the operation wich was conducted bye the 36th SS, the Kaminski Brigade, and several SS/SD units.
One of the most difficult things I have run into while trying to research WWII German Generals is trying to sift through allied propaganda, and post war german apologist propaganda. SS Generals in paticular had their records "revised" to reflect post war anti nazi sentiments.
I'm sure had Rommel been an SS man, his record would have been "revised" .

thank you, I know it was not my fault but if more honorable people like this fictual officer Steiner had argued as seen in this movie, holocaust maybe did not happen as it happened.
This here is my favourite scene of any wartime movie
Klottelitsch 2 years ago
@Klottelitsch , You had to be there to understand. In the US we had our own conservatives like the the Longs of Lousianna. with the depresssion and hyperinflation and without a strong democratic history Germany stumbled into dictatorship. Once the bad guys get in control, its hard to root them out. There is no way to say your sorry to 7 millon dead. Instead, take care of the living. Tell all the truth of what happened. Germany is a good friend to the world. We all remember..

Klottelitsch 2 years ago
Oh yes its very important to show that there were brave and honorable german officers that HATED SS Guys as this Obersturmbannfuehrer who wants to murder the Jews GREAT PERFORMANCE and GREAT SPEACH of Michael Caine (STEINER!!)

you saluted the man not the rank as opposed to saluting the rank not the man day to day

just goes to show that not all german soldiers were nazis, they were part of the wehrmacht. they fought for their country and not for hitler!!!

The sentry who first warns Steiner to stay on the train and then snaps off a sharp salute, does so when he sees his Knight's Cross. However, being awarded the prestigious award didn't necessarily indicate Steiner was an officer, so why he saluted is a bit of a mystery.
antarcticamoon 2 years ago
1942, Hitler ordered that a Knight's Cross recipient, regardless of the rank of the wearer, were to greet first.
svku911 2 years ago
Ah yes, then that makes sense. Thank you. The United States has the same regulation regarding the Medal of Honor.
antarcticamoon 2 years ago
The German armed forces, like the US and the UK armed forces, granted those where awarded the highest medal for valour (Medal of Honour, Victoria Cross) the right to be saluted first regardless of rank. So in theory, a US four star general (or even the president for that fact) should salute a private who was awarded the Medal of Honor first when the ribbon is recognized.
agsibarani 2 years ago
I think this may be similar all around the world in fact. Several months ago, a Dutch captain from the Royal Commandos was awarded the Military William Order for "performing excellent acts of Bravery, Leadership and Loyalty in battle" in Afghanistan. One of the things that was said was that he also now had the honour of being saluted first, even by officers that are ranked higher than him.

Could you upload the part that the paratroopers are landing, while Devlin is waiting on the beach?

The special edition is worth watching with many extra scenes iincluding Canaris meeting with Himmler at the beginning and an explanation to Radls incurable illness.

This certainly is a great, but unfortunately, overlooked war movie. I was told by my old boss once about some of the differences from the book, one of them being that the U.S. rangers were originally British commandos, and Robert Duvall's character shoots himself instead of being knocked off by a firing squad. Michael Caine is great in this scene, that's why I faved this. I also just love anything WWII in general.

Big differences between the book and the movie.
I got more clips from WW2 movies in my channel, take a look if you are interested.

British play better Germans than the Americans. xD
TheUnforgivenRebel 2 years ago
exactly just look at ralph fiennes in schindlers list
macky111222 2 years ago
Yeah, a classic. Other british actors who played germans very well are Richard Burton and Robert Shaw. But Ed Harris, who is american, played a mean one in Enemy at the Gates.
Also, I noticed that nazis in German war movies aren't so "badass" as in British or American movies... they look more average. (physically)
TheUnforgivenRebel 2 years ago
ed harris was very good indeed, i didn't feel he was trying to be german but more natural as in by not using a german accent but when he toyed with sacha you knew the boy was going to die and it was very powerful. an interesting observation but then again its probably a propaganda thing to make the germans look and seem inferior to those that would eventually defeat them (allies). band of brothers was more balanced, the german soldiers were alot more menacing than your other typical ww2 film
macky111222 2 years ago
Yep, and it's not surprising, Anglo-Saxon heritage, geographical proximity and somewhat common culture...plus, the English were always very keen to imitate Germans in movies or TV, whether it's for comedic or dramatic purpose...have you seen the Fry and Laurie interrogation sketch ? What makes Michael Caine's performance oddly brilliant is that he doesn't even have a German accent (as it is usally the solution in these instances), he does it all form posture, emotion and manneurisms...genius.
dixxjamm 2 years ago
Hmmm... the british heritage is kind of different to german...

Fryfish9 2 years ago
Oscar Dirlewanger was the SS General in command of the raising of the Ghetto. He was commander of the 36th SS Division that bore his name. The 36th SS was made up of criminals. He was awarded the Knight's Cross for his reduction of the Ghetto. Dirlewanger was accused of being a pedophile and a homosexual. Those charges may have been allied propaganda, but there seems to have been some basis for them. Hitler awarding the Knight's Cross to Dirlewanger didn't sit well with anyone except Hitler.
Grimmest117 2 years ago
Are you sure? I thought that the Warsaw Ghetto action was commanded first by Sammern and later by Stroop and that it was Stroop who razed the Ghetto. As for Dr. Dirlewanger, I think that the Reich govt actually jailed him in a KZ because of his relationship with an underage girl. Dirlewanger was an appaling individual on many levels but he did have physical courage; he was apparently wounded 12 times during the course of WW2.
Fryfish9 2 years ago
Dirlewanger was in overall command of the operation wich was conducted bye the 36th SS, the Kaminski Brigade, and several SS/SD units.
One of the most difficult things I have run into while trying to research WWII German Generals is trying to sift through allied propaganda, and post war german apologist propaganda. SS Generals in paticular had their records "revised" to reflect post war anti nazi sentiments.
I'm sure had Rommel been an SS man, his record would have been "revised" .
