Actually, I prefer the happier ending cuz Seymour and Audrey's dreams being crushed is a little much for me. Makes me cry everytime I hear "Somewhere Thats Green". :'(
What an expensive scene to cut out. All the money spent on extras, props and special effects seems like it was more than the entire film! It should have been cut but couldn't they have decided that before spending all that money filming it?
Yeah, that was pretty bad. DIdn't fit the rest of the film and ran way to long. It is ashame that probably most of the budget was used for the buildings collapsing and those explosions.
there's one thing i don't understand. the main character did what he did because he wanted to be somebody, and the plant made him a somebody, but if everyone had a plant, then why do they feed theirs blood?
@Chromaggia2057 No, it's too happy. This ending is made for the stage, though. But, Hollywood loves to take things and ruin it. It's what they do. :P At least this is on YouTube. :D
this is really cool but it would be scary that if was real. Those things are freaking huge and their r more and if this was on call of duty black ops that would b cool
Day of the Triffids on steroids! The ending was rather bland. Watching the pants for too long, you begin to see the flaws in the design including its mouth.
This ending works a LOT better in the play. I don't think Seymour was ever consumed by greed to the point of villainy in this one. If anything he's a hapless schmuck that just wanted to get out of skid row, but got wrapped up in a lousy, one sided deal. Seriously, did ANYONE feel bad when he let that rotten SOB Orin asphyxiate? And Mushnik, instead of doing the right thing and turning in a 'murderer' just used it as a chance to get rich off the plant.
It does seem a little drawn out.....however....we must assume this is rough footage. I'm sure if it had been included in the theatrical release, it would have been trimmed down a bit.
I like this ending, the original ending, more. Frank Oz had to change it after a screening with the first ending left the viewers rather depressed, or so I was lead to believe. This ending emphasizes the Faustian themes in the story; make a deal with the devil, so to say, and not only you will pay.
Random thought, maybe it was a "not so different" moment between Seymore and Audrey2? Both would give in to urges(blood vs others) and would be undone by their own lack of willpower.
What I find confusing about this is how every Audrey II plant was able to grow to such gigantic proportions at such a rate. I mean I highly doubt that every person who bought an Audrey II would be stupid enough to kill random people just to feed them right?
I like both endings, but they're both different. You can either choose the more realistic ending or the happier ending. Most people would choose the happier ending because it leaves a better feeling inside, but should both be appreciated for all the work and creativity. :)
Gosh, What about the wizards? I suppose they used their wands to sense the plants were lying and they burned them, or to sum it up, "Avada Kedavra!". And i'm pretty sure the wizards won't listen to silly muggle stuff such as PLANTS! We have flesh eating plants already, thank you very much
For a movie, this ending is way too dark in comparison to the rest of it. In the stage show, it's cool and kinda funny to see the plant overtake the theatre, and then at the end you see all the characters again for their bows, and you see that they're okay. In a movie, the plant kills everyone and that's it, period. Everyone died a bloody death and they're not coming back. The stage musical ending works for a stage musical and the movie ending works for a movie.
@hahleemkay The movie nailed this down! If this was real, which it isnt, the monster plants WOULD have when around and killed everybody. They would have destroyed the world. Leveled buildings, killed millions before it was stopped, if it was EVER STOPPED!! SO DON'T FEED THE MOTHER FUCKING PLANTS!!!
@hahleemkay I dunno. While your opinion is valid. I think more people would have watched, known this film more if it had been a musical horror, as opposed to a musical dark comedy. And besides, Audrey II is my favourite character and found Audrey I annoying, so to see her get eaten was kind of satisfying.
what the hell were they talking about that was a great ending :D plus epic music FTW :3 shoulda kept it that way or at least put that final song somewhere in new ending >=/ jerks.
Even in the "And they lived happily ever after..." type ending there's a little Audrey 2 smiling at the very end right before the credits roll which thankfully leaves open the possibility of a sequel.......(sorry for any poor spelling)
@OfLanceTheLonginus I heard " and got sweet talked into feeding it blood" so the plant sweet talked them into feeding them blood but that would mean there are millions of murderers because Seymore 4 example went from a few drops from his finger having 2 kill ! So I would assume the people who bought them had 2 do the same for them2 grow that large either way the official ending was the best. u can't just shoot a ending this complicated into montages. This ending was a whole other movie
Seymour isn't the only lonley desperate nerd in the world mind you.
Besides, if it's in densely populated areas, and it's not like people could just feed them blood packs or something along the lines of that.
And hell no. This ending cost 5 million dollars, and people who don't appreciate it must prefer a story where a murderer and a retard get away with shit.

@HudsonB616 You think so? I love this ending. As terrible as it sounds, I think it has more of a moral this way, as opposed to the supremely cheesy other ending. (Though I like that one too..)
@aGasmaskProcession I suppose so. This ending is very well made, Maybe I didn't like this as much as the used one, because Even though Audry 2 is evil, I always liked him,(I mean how could you not like a singing man eating alien plant), I think that is what the director wanted us viewers to feel, but when I watched, this I kinda hate him. Great film though, one of my favorites :)
does anybody else think this ending dragged on a little too long? Faust or not, audiences would have walked out, told their friends the movie went on for far too long, then nobody would have gone to see it and missed out on the enjoyable music, acting and all that other stuff.
Not really. Visually, it's amazing and the song is great. The only downside is the lack of sound effects, which I'm sure would've spiced things up and made them more exciting in the finished version.
I doubt everyone would start feeding it once they found out what it lived on. All the plants would be destroyed with some sort of weed killer haha! I mean, at least Seymour had motives. Everybody else is just like "Oh lets kill people to make mah plant grow"!!! :D Haha but yeah I like the Happy ending better in my opinion :3
@magicalgirlbehoimi I guess the point is that everybody would turn greedy like Seymour did, and start feeding the plants with blood once they understand they could grant them their wishes, hence the lyrics of the song "whatever they offer you don't feed the plants".
im just going to go out on a limb here and say that this is the most anticlimactic ending ever. the point of movies is that we get to see how the hero overcomes. not how he gets eaten by a giant plant. I like this ending just fine, but compared to the one they used, I don't like the orginal.
The point is...Seymore ISN'T a hero...he's a multiple murderer, and he didn't really deserve to win in the end. He died in the original movie, and in the stage play...the "happy ending" in this movie was a betrayal of the original story...it would be like doing a remake of Alien, and having the alien kill Ripley.
@RedwoodTheElf I respect your opinion, and I am glad that you argued intelligently instead of acting childish with me. But the idea itself to me is odd. When the plant is trying to kill him we wonder if he's going to die but really don't think he is. We think he shall overcome this obstacle, so when he just gets eaten, it's very anti climactic. The best ending, in my opinion is that Audrey died and Seymour overcame the plant, but killed himself in the process. In my opinion.
@Daizzey85 you are both right in your own ways. Symour might be a (wannabe) murderer (he doesn't actually kill anybody), but the problem is that for the whole movie he is shown like a nice goof who only tries to make it out of a bad life with his love Audry.
his death at the end isn't really part of the general mood of the rest of the movie...
they should have at least let him kill someone for real and show him more like an actual anti-hero if they wanted to keep this ending.
Seymour is a multiple murderer in the original film and in the play, but NOT in this one. The dentist's death was an accident, and it was the plant that killed Mushnik. And although Seymour dies in the original film, he takes the plant with him.
this ending honestly makes no sense, if the plants did take over the world and kill everyone they would just die out eventually. If the main plant didnt reproduce and became like a god, demanding sacrifice and keeping a small population of humans alive that would make much much more sense
@ricksinjr5543 Wrong. Remember how the plant came to Earth in the first place? While this group may die out, as long as one can be moved to a new planet, the species will survive until the devour the universe.
@SheerANONYMOUS In Theory that works, but we have no way of knowing how the plant was beamed from the previous planet, maybe it cant teleport itself, who knows?? its an open ended ending and can honestly be interpreted either way
@ricksinjr5543 True. And if you think about it, the plant kinda won either way, because even the happy ending shows a new plant in the Krelborn's garden.
@ricksinjr5543 Maybe it became far stronger and larger than the other plants, so it grew to be huge. And they would keep other animals alive, because humans would struggle too much.
what I don't get is how did people across the nation not notice that the plants were growing at abnormally fast rates and only responded to the taste of human flesh? Audrey II didn't care for normal plant food and only began to grow once Seymour gave him blood to drink. What made the thousands of offspring any different?
Yeah, the original ending is a cop out. Seymour killed 2 people, and it's really hard to argue mushkin deserved it, sure he was greedy but did he deserve to die? This is a dark movie, I pray we get this ending restored on a new release as it elevates this movie from great to an absolute classic
jesus, they didnt "change" the ending because they wanted to. Ya see, there was a big studio fire and guess what part of the film got destroyed. luckily they saved the black and white version, but they couldnt put a black and white scene in a full color movie, so they were forced to change the ending.
Can sort of see why it got changed, not because of the negative ending but because this segment seems more like it should have been an epilogue rather than part of the film.
@SOMEMEGAMANXFAN This movie is supposed to take place in the 60's that's why if it took place now we would have them running away to their alien mommys!
I think the instrumental section was way too long. Otherwise, this is awesome. I love this show/movie, and I am currently puppeteering Twoey for the second time in the show.
Ok that endin took the piss its like ok we get it they took over the world hooray for them lol. Should have just ended with audrey 2 eatin seymour, spit out the glasses then yep..end of. Would have been much better
Can we stop calling the test audience whiney? they were mad because if YOU'VE SEEN THIS FILM! it never goes over majorly depressing i nthe deaths because it's a comedy. This ending practically throws the dark moments straight at you with no slight buildup jsut full on depressing even with the up beat final song.
You're so right. Even the original Roger Corman movie from 1961 didn't have such a downer ending (Seymour dies, but so does the plant, and the other humans all live). Thank God the ending was changed.
I prefer the happy ending myself but this was too cool to leave on the cutting room floor. They should have used this in a dream sequence or a bigger slay-the-dragon ending.
Having seen the show on stage, I must admit that this particular version of the ending works a lot better on stage than it does on film. My two cents.
i love the movie as it is now. i would have loved this ending if the rest of the film was in the same dark tone. This is interesting to see after all of these years.
honestly I love this ending but if they just trimmed the Adurey II's attacking the city and just had the song go instrumental for one verse and bridge then the ending with it on the statue of liberty I don't see why they didn't use it in the movie
Let me come out in defense of the changed ending...
While I'm not against the idea of a downer ending at all as a concept, this original ending changes the theme of the story and makes the plant the central character. However, in the film, at least in the cut that was released, the story was clearly about Seymour and his personal journey. Audrey II doesn't even start talking until halfway through. So I feel like the story needed to end with Seymour overcoming his personal challenges.
and ney yooorrrrrrrkk... AND WHERE YOU LIVE!!!!!!! >:D

"It's okay to get away with murder kids!"
OfLanceTheLonginus 3 months ago
@Daizzey85 you are both right in your own ways. Symour might be a (wannabe) murderer (he doesn't actually kill anybody), but the problem is that for the whole movie he is shown like a nice goof who only tries to make it out of a bad life with his love Audry.
his death at the end isn't really part of the general mood of the rest of the movie...
they should have at least let him kill someone for real and show him more like an actual anti-hero if they wanted to keep this ending.
ansiaaa666 3 months ago
@RedwoodTheElf I think that was the original ending for Alien.
CsBTransition 2 months ago
@RedwoodTheElf
Seymour is a multiple murderer in the original film and in the play, but NOT in this one. The dentist's death was an accident, and it was the plant that killed Mushnik. And although Seymour dies in the original film, he takes the plant with him.
zvermilyer3 2 months ago
So... the plant wins in this one? .... WHOO GO VILLAINS! You guys finally won for once!
Fox12125 4 months ago
this ending honestly makes no sense, if the plants did take over the world and kill everyone they would just die out eventually. If the main plant didnt reproduce and became like a god, demanding sacrifice and keeping a small population of humans alive that would make much much more sense
ricksinjr5543 4 months ago 10
@ricksinjr5543 Wrong. Remember how the plant came to Earth in the first place? While this group may die out, as long as one can be moved to a new planet, the species will survive until the devour the universe.
SheerANONYMOUS 4 months ago
@SheerANONYMOUS In Theory that works, but we have no way of knowing how the plant was beamed from the previous planet, maybe it cant teleport itself, who knows?? its an open ended ending and can honestly be interpreted either way
ricksinjr5543 4 months ago
@ricksinjr5543 True. And if you think about it, the plant kinda won either way, because even the happy ending shows a new plant in the Krelborn's garden.
SheerANONYMOUS 4 months ago
@SheerANONYMOUS i was thinking the same thing so if a new person got that plant the plan still might of worked
glorie712 4 months ago
@glorie712 Not if Seymour finds it and kills it he's not going through that again!

@ricksinjr5543 Maybe it became far stronger and larger than the other plants, so it grew to be huge. And they would keep other animals alive, because humans would struggle too much.

Maybe they did eventually, after proving how much greater they were by beating the army.
Let's face it, if they were smart enough to plan this kind of overthrowing, they'd probably have that bit sorted.

@TheColaGoodfellow good point =P.

@ricksinjr5543 from what i understand, they need blood to grow, not to survive. so they send out a spore to another planet, take it over and repeat.

what I don't get is how did people across the nation not notice that the plants were growing at abnormally fast rates and only responded to the taste of human flesh? Audrey II didn't care for normal plant food and only began to grow once Seymour gave him blood to drink. What made the thousands of offspring any different?

Fives2755555 4 months ago
Yeah, the original ending is a cop out. Seymour killed 2 people, and it's really hard to argue mushkin deserved it, sure he was greedy but did he deserve to die? This is a dark movie, I pray we get this ending restored on a new release as it elevates this movie from great to an absolute classic
Vriess123 5 months ago 3
jesus, they didnt "change" the ending because they wanted to. Ya see, there was a big studio fire and guess what part of the film got destroyed. luckily they saved the black and white version, but they couldnt put a black and white scene in a full color movie, so they were forced to change the ending.
ZombieBlobs 5 months ago
Can sort of see why it got changed, not because of the negative ending but because this segment seems more like it should have been an epilogue rather than part of the film.

@SOMEMEGAMANXFAN This movie is supposed to take place in the 60's that's why if it took place now we would have them running away to their alien mommys!

this would have been great as an ending if they told people it was a horror movie but they sold it as a comedy so people did want everyone to die

I think the instrumental section was way too long. Otherwise, this is awesome. I love this show/movie, and I am currently puppeteering Twoey for the second time in the show.

animeluver241 5 months ago
Can we stop calling the test audience whiney? they were mad because if YOU'VE SEEN THIS FILM! it never goes over majorly depressing i nthe deaths because it's a comedy. This ending practically throws the dark moments straight at you with no slight buildup jsut full on depressing even with the up beat final song.
SingerKId12 5 months ago
@SingerKId12
You're so right. Even the original Roger Corman movie from 1961 didn't have such a downer ending (Seymour dies, but so does the plant, and the other humans all live). Thank God the ending was changed.
zvermilyer3 5 months ago
@SingerKId12 Who cares if it's depressing...It's only a movie. Those people needed to get over it and except the natural ending.
ember1k 5 months ago
@SingerKId12 I totally agree. this ending is cool, but it doesn't fit in with the rest the movie.
ansiaaa666 3 months ago
I prefer the happy ending myself but this was too cool to leave on the cutting room floor. They should have used this in a dream sequence or a bigger slay-the-dragon ending.
Yachirobi 5 months ago
Having seen the show on stage, I must admit that this particular version of the ending works a lot better on stage than it does on film. My two cents.

honestly I love this ending but if they just trimmed the Adurey II's attacking the city and just had the song go instrumental for one verse and bridge then the ending with it on the statue of liberty I don't see why they didn't use it in the movie

I am speechless, WTH is this
DsAngel1211 5 months ago
Let me come out in defense of the changed ending...
While I'm not against the idea of a downer ending at all as a concept, this original ending changes the theme of the story and makes the plant the central character. However, in the film, at least in the cut that was released, the story was clearly about Seymour and his personal journey. Audrey II doesn't even start talking until halfway through. So I feel like the story needed to end with Seymour overcoming his personal challenges.

way better ending the one used in the movie. a solid moral
