In addition, let's give Seles the 94 Australian Open, 93, 95, 96 French Opens, and 93, 95, 96 US Opens. I'm sorry but the 99 French Open was a toss up, no way Seles would have been an automatic shoe in 10 years after her first slam there without the stabbing so that one stays with Graf. We can't guarantee Seles any Wimbledon titles so with that said, Seles would have taken a total of 7 slams from Graf. Doing the math...that is not half of Graf's total number of Slams in the post stabbing era.
I love Seles and Graf. And while it's obvious that the stabbing had a huge effect on the number of slams won by both players, let's not make simple conclusions here. When Seles was destryoing everyone in '92 and there was NOBODY who could beat her it was Graf who thrashed her 6-2, 6-1 in the Wimbledon Final within an hour. Stabbing or no stabbing, could you really take those post stabbing Wimbledon crowns away from Graf and simply give them to Seles who we all know never liked the grass?
Too bad the pre-stabbing Seles would never be the same player again post-stabbing.
All the tennis experts say that she would have won at least 10 to 15 slams in addition to her 9 slams had the stabbing not occured. She was dominating everyone in the slams, Monica had won 7 out of 8 slams she had entered before the stabbing and clearly at the top of the game by herself for at least 2 years before the stabbing occured much to the opportunistic Graf who won everything after the stabbing
The best thing about the tennis back then was the different playing styles. Everyone was so unique. Nowadays, everyone has almost the same exact forehand, 2 handed backhand, serve, clothes, etc...All the women are like clones of each other! I remember the days of Seles, Navratilova, Aranxta, Graf- very intriguing matchups.
You're absolutely right on. There were so many different styles bk then. The hardhitters (Graf, Seles, Capriati), the serve volleyers (Navratilova), the top spinners (Martinez, Sanchez, Sabatini), the all courters (Tauziat, Spirlea). Now there's only 1 form : everyone crushes the ball like Sharapova. Boring.
Yeah, definitely true. Arantxa, a bit like Gabi Sabatini, didn't really have the weapons to hurt Monica in the way a Graf or Capriati could, so had to try and 'spoil' Monica's game and try and induce errors from her.
Arantxa looks great in red.

@realist0043 it's great you respect both of them and so do i.
but in '92 Seles was working hard not to grunt in the final and it was showing on the way she was playing.
there is no saying Seles would have never beaten Graf on grass ever.
let's not forget she did beat Navratilova in the semis who is the greatest Wimbledon champion of all time.
the clip is on youtube and it is amazing how Seles was outplaying Martina on her turf.

Seles always found the best angles, I've hardly ever seen that in any other tennis players (male or female, federer aside)

One has to wonder how many more slams Seles would have won had the stabbing not occured.
Half of Steffi's slams were a result of the Seles attack, Seles would never be the same player again, physically and mentally

Monica also made the finals of 32 of out 33 events she had entered before the stabbing, another record

What made Monica so unique are her lethal groudstrokes on both sides with angle and a mental toughness that was unparallel in the sport.

the short hair 1991 monica is like my favourite form of her! she was so out there and fierce in everyway and did some incredible shots.

I think Arantxa SHOULD of beaten Seles a bit more. I just feel Arantxa didn't have the big weapons to make pull through to the victory.

Although Monica won nearly all their matches, it was always great to watch their matches - always some incredible rallies
