  • I love Kiri. By far one of the best singers in the world. <3 <3

  • Moving and sublimely beautiful.

  • one of the greatest sopranos and a great lady too !!

  • Koogala@ The narrowminded tunnel vision of many opera afficiniados are not elitists because of they were, they would appreciate all the NEWER singers, conductors, productions but often cannot. It is a miindset that is beyond the ability for growth! There is NO "one" conductor nor only "one" singer. All the great ones and there are zillions out there many not even yet discovered, all bring a beauty of artform in their OWN respective way. Barbara Todres/NYC

  • I cannot thank my grandmother enough for taking me into the city all the time to see operas and symphonies. Only now do I finally understand how magical music is and how much it has changed my life. <3

  • Az első feleségemet is a hangjáért vettem el. Kiri Te Kanawa Ha ismerném a második nagy szerelmem lenne, oly csodálato a hangja, nincsen rá szó!

  • great voice!!!

  • What a sad aria, full of hope, of optimism, and Kiri manages to put that smile fo hope in her voice... to herald the tragedy of the betrayal... what a singer, the seeming ease of her performance belies the hours of hard, hard work on this, Puccini's most beautiful piece - IMHO. Dame Kiri has left us rich beyond belief with her recordings. Thank you Kiri, honour to your art!

  • She owns it.

  • this song always hit a solf spot inmy heart

  • EZ A GYÖNYRŰ NŐ X ÉVES ...ISTENEM...ÉS MILYEN HANGJA VAN ...

  • Underbart !

  • Listen Kiri is to have a fresh encounter with angels.

  • Magistral opera y magistral la interpretacion

  • Gorgeous! She is performing in LA in a month ;-)

  • My God! She makes me happy to be alive and to hear the angels of sing!

  • This song allowed me to become a soprano devotee. I’ve listen to other soprano voices, and they are great in their own respect, but Kiri sings like the song is a personal experience, interjecting passion to lyrics with a perfect voice. I am not worthy!!

  • The clarity is magnificent. The voice is very soft is extraordinarily perfect here.

  • MAGNIFICENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Don't cry for me... I'm already dead.

  • @sonpanchan

    Ha ha ha ha

  • sensitive..i can say.. make me cry..

  • This just proves how beautiful an accurate reading of the score can be. Not once does Maestra luxuriate unless it is marked. The "poco"s do not become "molto"s as they usually do in the hands of others. The high notes are not extended obsessively. And yet the reading sounds glorious, striking and highly personal. Many people think altering the score will make it more beautiful; here is evidence to the contrary. Long Live Puccini, and to hell with the singers who think they are wiser than he.

  • Molto bello!!!

  • One of my favourite sopranos!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, what a beautiful timbre! I used to think that I know almost all best sopranoes, but detecting such a brilliant voice I realise that my knowledge is like a drop in a sea!

  • the clarity in her voice is so beautiful

  • She's wonderful! I "slightly" prefer Anna Motto, but that's just personal preference. Kiri te Kanawa is an angel, too! Brava!

  • Muito Bom!

  • I love her

  • There is non better - Kiri's voice has changed over the years - but not so you would notice- I would rather have Kiri sing anything to me than having heard all the world arias - so say what you must if it makes you feel better but in the end your words mean nothing and Kiri's voice means everything!

  • Amazing!!

  • I agree with minoa80... Puccini arias are well sung by Te Kanawa, but they're just somewhat better in Caballe's and Tebaldi's voices!

Nevertheless, there's no point in comparing them all... They all use different techniques and are at different levels... Meaning by this that I personally prefer Tebaldi and Caballe for they're just not human at all. They're goddesses of bel canto and opera. So, don't compare divinities to other levels...

  • This is gorgeous, she's got the right tone and the right voice to sing this aria. Kiri is a gem of music. Beautiful as always, Kiri!!!

  • @esclarmonde1 And who are you? Perhaps, are you the voice of God ? Your puerile opinions are absolutely nothing worthless to the world. You are a very coinceted person and very silly. Better, shut up and go on and say those things in the bathroom or toilet in your house.

  • And yet you waste your precious time to find her on youtube...

  • Uhm, no offense but the best one for this aria is Montserrat Caballé ..

  • @minoa80 Appears another chauvinistic Spanish

  • couldn't agree more!

  • I'm not even Spanish you prick

  • This is about acknowledging who's the best, nationalities have nothing to see with it

  • There is no comparison. Kiri is much better!!

  • What a heavenly interpretation...

  • It's a lovely version very lovely but I prefer Ying Huang version, there is something that"s more fragile maybe in her way of prononciating I guess...

But anyway she makes it sound so easy and the sound of her voice is a delight

  • This role was witten for Spinto Soprano,Kiri te Kanawa (beautyful) isn´t spinto. The voice, for this role must be row, be over the orchestra and, remember also Cio-Cio San is a man. musn´t be too feminine.

based in the interpretation for me, the best soprano in the past was Callas and Mika Mori now.

  • WHAT?!?! cio-cio san is a man?!?!! is this like some sort of Kabuki theatre thing?

  • @CantoSemper49

She had a son as well.

  • I'm very confused. Who had a son?!?! Kiri? or Cio-Cio? I know Cio-Cio has a child...I didn't know that Kiri had one!

  • Cio Cio San.

  • Roeslerswiss, Cio-Cio San is a woman! The naval officer Pinkerton assured her, on the last morning they were together, "Oh, Butterfly, my little WIFE, I shall return with the roses, when the earth is full of joy, when the robin makes his nest."

  • thank you for this...I can sleep now knowing that Cio-Cio San is a woman.

  • roeslerwiss. I know what you are saying. Kiri always has a sweet floating quality to her voice. I do think though that she is very versatile and can produce some raw power when required. This is not a bad effort. What ever you may say, she is always enjoyable to listen to.

  • spettacolare....voce meravigliosa....

  • This aria was written for Kiri. Her voice is the perfect lyric soprano for this role!!!

  • CantoSemper49 you mean metaphorically of course. The opera Madama Butterfly premiered in 1904 and the original Cio-Cio San was the soprano Rosina Storchio; Kiri te Kanawa would be born 40 years later. I am happy with Kiri's performance which we inevitably compare with La Divina's. Kiri is silky where Callas is raw, she lacks nothing on the high notes but Callas would not have "bent" into the final high 3:50 as Kiri does. The orchestra seems too restrained.

  • yes, of course metaphorically =] I only say that because she fits the role like a puzzle piece goes into a puzzle and creates a beautiful picture. Callas, suprisingly performs this aria with great lyric expression; which is strange because of her many dramatic roles. Overall I do prefer Kiri for Cio-Cio =]

  • el estilo puede que haya cambiado pero la música sigue basandose en EMOCIÖN y Renata Tebaldi sabe muy bien el significado de eso.

  • I am an Opera singer, and kiri is one of my favorite soprano's alongside Beverly Sills and Edita Gruberova. I can honestly say that I have not ever hear another soprano with a more finer technique. Her technique is almost flawless, and her top notes are wellplaced, and she eases into them with the utmost ease. Her notes flow into eachother, and unlike many other soprano's, her notes on the top notes flow and are not at all stacato.

    Bravo Kiri!

  • @Cedricfollyman thank you for your wonderful and clearly knowledgeable sharing...so great to have a comment from someone who truly appreciates the art from the perspective of one who practices that art...

  • The Sopranos who came before have shown her the way as she will do for those who follow her WHY MUST THERE BE ONE WHO IS THE BEST THEY ALL ADD TO THE BEAUTY OF THE WORLD, ENOUGH WITH ELITIST THINKING. We are here for the beauty of the work ENJOY!

  • @koogala Well said.

  • @koogala Well said and I do agree with you 100%. And I think Maria Callas would think the same way too ;-)

  • maravillosa voz me hace llorar!!!!

  • A mi tambien!

  • i think this woman brings lots of different emotions to this aria... whoever said it was miles away from caballé is exaggerating... i prefer caballé but there are lots of emotions conveyed in this interpretation... a very rich and subtle one, i think.

  • what a gorgeous lady

  • que belleza de voz....

  • I use to cry whith this song

  • @agpmyt i still cry with this song

  • @agpmyt I understand You. I love this Aria

  • @agpmyt very touching music...likewise, my friend.

  • sublime...

  • Kiri is the best at most arias. If she is second best, it is probably to Leontyne. I agree with the comments that people like Callas and Tebaldi bring a little more passion. You can't be the best at everything!

  • Good but just good. Quite a few miles away from the passion and power of The Divine Caballe

  • Nice, but she lack power on the high notes, this aria is not really suited for her voice.

  • The first two acts of Butterfly is pure lyric and I don't think Kiri's lirico can be surpassed by anyone else (well, maybe Caballe)

  • My personal favourite would be Tebaldi, I´ve only heard one recording of this aria by caballe but the sound quality hinders the high notes...

I know I said role, but I actually was refering to this aria.

  • so crystaline as it begins and so full of passion so strong

  • I see elegance, spirituality and sumptuosity...That's what opera is about!

  • Perfect. Completely perfect. In my opinion, no other singer can hold a candle to her.

  • my favorites. her impression of this is just flawless. my favorite soprano. thank you for sharing

  • Absolutely stunning (the aria and the diva).

    Thank you for posting, napat14.

  • youre welcome

  • Brava! She takes your breath away. Thank you for posting this exquisite voice so well done.

  • She has never sung the entire opera, has she ? I'd want to hear her version of "Vogliatemi bene"

  • Fortunately Kiri never sang the entire opera! She would've really risked ruining her voice if she did as the part of Butterfly is way too heavy for her lyric soprano. But I know how you feel. Kiri's voice is just so lusciously beautiful that you want her to sing everything under the sun; anything she sings will be gorgeous! :-)

  • I agree 100%. I just want her to sing everything, lol. Her voice is so distinctive, once you hear it, you know it's her. And I love this rendition of the beautiful aria.

  • OH THANK YOU!!!! Ive been waiting for someone to post her version of this. She is just divine, my very favorite, and her reading of this, and everything, is sublime.

  • Sumamente emotiva!!!
