I cannot thank my grandmother enough for taking me into the city all the time to see operas and symphonies. Only now do I finally understand how magical music is and how much it has changed my life. <3
What a sad aria, full of hope, of optimism, and Kiri manages to put that smile fo hope in her voice... to herald the tragedy of the betrayal... what a singer, the seeming ease of her performance belies the hours of hard, hard work on this, Puccini's most beautiful piece - IMHO. Dame Kiri has left us rich beyond belief with her recordings. Thank you Kiri, honour to your art!
This song allowed me to become a soprano devotee. I’ve listen to other soprano voices, and they are great in their own respect, but Kiri sings like the song is a personal experience, interjecting passion to lyrics with a perfect voice. I am not worthy!!
This just proves how beautiful an accurate reading of the score can be. Not once does Maestra luxuriate unless it is marked. The "poco"s do not become "molto"s as they usually do in the hands of others. The high notes are not extended obsessively. And yet the reading sounds glorious, striking and highly personal. Many people think altering the score will make it more beautiful; here is evidence to the contrary. Long Live Puccini, and to hell with the singers who think they are wiser than he.
Wow, what a beautiful timbre! I used to think that I know almost all best sopranoes, but detecting such a brilliant voices I realised that my knowledge is like a drop in a sea!
Wow, what a beautiful timbre! I used to think that I know almost all best sopranoes, but detecting such a brilliant voice I realise that my knowledge is like a drop in a sea!
There is non better - Kiri's voice has changed over the years - but not so you would notice- I would rather have Kiri sing anything to me than having heard all the world arias - so say what you must if it makes you feel better but in the end your words mean nothing and Kiri's voice means everything!
I agree with minoa80... Puccini arias are well sung by Te Kanawa, but they're just somewhat better in Caballe's and Tebaldi's voices!
Nevertheless, there's no point in comparing them all... They all use different techniques and are at different levels... Meaning by this that I personally prefer Tebaldi and Caballe for they're just not human at all. They're goddesses of bel canto and opera. So, don't compare divinities to other levels...
@esclarmonde1 And who are you? Perhaps, are you the voice of God ? Your puerile opinions are absolutely nothing worthless to the world. You are a very coinceted person and very silly. Better, shut up and go on and say those things in the bathroom or toilet in your house.
It's a lovely version very lovely but I prefer Ying Huang version, there is something that"s more fragile maybe in her way of prononciating I guess...
But anyway she makes it sound so easy and the sound of her voice is a delight
This role was witten for Spinto Soprano,Kiri te Kanawa (beautyful) isn´t spinto. The voice, for this role must be row, be over the orchestra and, remember also Cio-Cio San is a man. musn´t be too feminine.
based in the interpretation for me, the best soprano in the past was Callas and Mika Mori now.
Roeslerswiss, Cio-Cio San is a woman! The naval officer Pinkerton assured her, on the last morning they were together, "Oh, Butterfly, my little WIFE, I shall return with the roses, when the earth is full of joy, when the robin makes his nest."
roeslerwiss. I know what you are saying. Kiri always has a sweet floating quality to her voice. I do think though that she is very versatile and can produce some raw power when required. This is not a bad effort. What ever you may say, she is always enjoyable to listen to.
CantoSemper49 you mean metaphorically of course. The opera Madama Butterfly premiered in 1904 and the original Cio-Cio San was the soprano Rosina Storchio; Kiri te Kanawa would be born 40 years later. I am happy with Kiri's performance which we inevitably compare with La Divina's. Kiri is silky where Callas is raw, she lacks nothing on the high notes but Callas would not have "bent" into the final high 3:50 as Kiri does. The orchestra seems too restrained.
yes, of course metaphorically =] I only say that because she fits the role like a puzzle piece goes into a puzzle and creates a beautiful picture. Callas, suprisingly performs this aria with great lyric expression; which is strange because of her many dramatic roles. Overall I do prefer Kiri for Cio-Cio =]
I am an Opera singer, and kiri is one of my favorite soprano's alongside Beverly Sills and Edita Gruberova. I can honestly say that I have not ever hear another soprano with a more finer technique. Her technique is almost flawless, and her top notes are wellplaced, and she eases into them with the utmost ease. Her notes flow into eachother, and unlike many other soprano's, her notes on the top notes flow and are not at all stacato.
@Cedricfollyman thank you for your wonderful and clearly knowledgeable sharing...so great to have a comment from someone who truly appreciates the art from the perspective of one who practices that art...

i think this woman brings lots of different emotions to this aria... whoever said it was miles away from caballé is exaggerating... i prefer caballé but there are lots of emotions conveyed in this interpretation... a very rich and subtle one, i think.

A very thin, lifeless performance from a singer who was lazy in everything she did.
