Jesus will judge a man's heart. Who are we to say mixed martial arts is wrong? How many people come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through the testimony and witness of fighters? countless, only God knows. i did. fighter's thank Jesus because they are men of God, who give Him all the honor and Glory he deserves. Is it wrong for a man to thank the Lord for blessing him with superior athletic ability?
@willg8806 Jesus' basic teachings tells people to 'turn the other cheek'. He also overturned the teaching from the old testament 'an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth' in the new testament. Jesus was a pacifist and was completely against any forms of violence towards another human being
These men believe they follow in Jesus' footsteps, no they don't - Jesus would hate what these men are doing
@J4K31 I completely agree with what you say about His teachings. This is sport, not violence. And again, COUNTLESS amounts of people have come to salvation because of fighters testimonies. Jesus is using their lives to glorify Himself. I agree with saying no to violence, and turning the other cheek... saved men that fight show love 2 their opponent, and even pray with them after the fight.. Phillipians 1:12-26. Dont be an old wineskin sir. Love you brother. Jesus be with you and your loved ones.
@J4K31 why do you have to curse? do you think Jesus will condone you for cursing? using slander isn't the right way to get you point across, and i don't see anything wrong with the sport. if a fighter is thanking Jesus let him thank him, cause wasn't it God who gave them that gift? if you say fighter can't associate themselves with Jesus, then what about other sports?
@MMcCaulley32 Jesus' basic teachings contradict what these men are doing, basic teachings as in 'to turn the other cheek', meaning that being violent isn't the answer
@J4K31 actually turning the other cheek is about not returning an insult as it lowers your self to their level. Not about violence, Jesus is not a pacifist.
@k12rising Turn the other cheek means that if someone were to smack you, you should simply turn the other cheek, meaning you'd rather have them hit you again than you hit them in return
It's a simple phrase, everyone knows what it means, I'm surprised you didn't
Jesus is one of the most well known pacifists in the history of man, everyone knows this
@J4K31 I know some people think it means that, but there is also another interpretation. For someone to strike you on your right cheek, they would have to be left handed. How can Jesus be a pacifist if he tells us to sell our Cloak and Buy a Sword: Luke 22:36. Also in Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth goes forth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
@J4K31 why dont you read the verse it is from, the beginning of the verse Jesus say " do not resist an evil person" and goes on to say turn the other cheek. if some hits you out of violence and anger with the wrong intention then turn the other cheek. but MMA is a sport these guys are using their gifts to glorify God with them let them do that. if they would not use their gift they would be throwing away the vary gift he gave them.

MMA is a sport. It's two guys in a contest of skill and endurance. It's not personal, it's not angry or mean. Hi, I'm Mark Driscoll. I like to mistakenly claim a particular view of gender espoused by my narrow cultural perspective as timeless, universal, natural and spiritual standard. Thanks for letting me use a position of privilege within the Body of Christ to protect my contingent social norms.
this guy is an idiot. last time i checked fighting wasnt turning the other cheek and if you can say i believe in god shouldnt you follow his teachings?
@GazawayJD the first thing he says i dont think there is anything more pure then 2 guys no stick or balls or team blah blah and see who is better....men are made for contact, dominion, conflict, i mean its right there turn your speakers up and pay attention you ignorant dump. control the violence and make it a sport so it makes it "better" ahaha dumb ass
Some of you guys are taking this way too seriously. It's both sad and funny to me. Heresy? Are we serious? Don't you just illustrate his point about men looking for something to fight?
I muchw ould rather listen to John macArthur (and I do all the time as he is my favorite pastor) even if john macarthur is old and doesnt like rock music. john macArthur is the best attitude of a pastor I see today. I dont need to embrace a rock and roll tough guy who cusses and says sexually vulgar things for attention. I just want the gospel and theology preached. who cares what the world thinks or popular evangelicalism.
I like MMA and UFC and all kinds of martial arts. Im a martial arts instructor myself and a Christian. I have a 2nd degree black belt and I love to fight/spar. I dont think it is a sin. I may love martial arts and combat sports but I dont like mark driscoll. As a relevent hip, martial artist, who likes hardcore punk rock i find mark driscoll to be overly offensive and think he behaves like a goon a lot of the time. he has good theology on many issues yet his attitude is so pretentious.
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
Do violence to no man...
It's interesting that a "pastor" who claims to teach from the Bible and the Bible only neglects the teachings of Christ.
It's a sport, God can use an MMA fighter just like He can use a Football player or a ballerina. You can be Christ against culture, Christ above culture, or Christ in culture, it's a matter of opinion, mine is Christ in culture. MMA can be used as a witnessing tool.
@LeviBenji I totally agree with you. this season of the ultimate fighter they have one guy who is a true follower of Christ. He fights for Jesus, he uses the skills that God blessed him with in a healthy way.
@LeviBenji Christ strictly forbids the use of violence in the sermon on the mount. He also forbids it at his arrest. Read the fruit of the Spirit. It can't be clearer in Scripture. This is like arguing that men should go to strip clubs so they can witness to their friends from work. Watch porn so you can witness to your friends? It is not about Christ in culture, it is about the kingdom of peace, joy and righteousness.
@timothyday321 You cannot seriously think that the "turning the other cheek" sermon on the mount applies to a sanctioned fight between two professional fighters who are not fighting for the purpose to commit evil against one another. Now I am not saying that the purpose of each individual in every fight is God-glorifying, but like I said before, MMA fighters can be used to witness just as much as any other athlete.
Can you picture Jesus in a cage match with some dude he has to pummel? Could you picture Jesus watching a cage fight and rejoicing over some guy getting his face kicked in? The answer is pretty easy to anyone who knows the Lord.
This guy talks a lot about the gospel of Luke, but fails to recall the scripture where John the baptist said, "do violence to no man?"
@ilikelazers Anyone can hate. Hates not a conviction because it's not a rational thought process. It's just irrational emotion not based in anything but insecurity.
@ilikelazers "I'm Mark Driscoll, everything I believe, I back up with scripture. Everyone who disagrees is too self-absorbed to recognize biblical truth." Quit criticizing your christian brothers and actually do something with your own life man.
@GazawayJD So how exactly does Mark use scripture to back-up his claim that everybody who criticizes the MMA is fat an lazy? BTW i only have one christian brother and he also thinks Mark Driscoll is a self-righteous jackass. I just love how he tried to justify the firing of two elders from his church. "just shut-up and do what you're told" Mark is only one army short of a dictatorship.
@ilikelazers I just want to point out that he doesn't completely bash the idea of MMA, just that he doesn't like the idea of two men beating the crap out of each other for no reason. Go watch the video where he talks about video games, it further illustrates his belief, and mine as well, that men need to start fighting for things worth fighting for. Also, Driscoll specifically talks about how men are made for combat, so he acknowledges that we naturally like stuff like MMA.
last time i remember jesus asking of us is to be fisherman's of men .would coming out victorious for tearing your brother down physically and beating him just build you up with pride witch is of this world ? wouldnt wining a soul and standing firm and diligent in the word of God be more of what god built man to be ? last time i read the word < THAT WAS THE MESSAGE.
1:00 ..."Let men be men and do what men do and let the other fat lazy men sit around criticize them while watching"... I agree with his premise, and then he adds that zing at the end. I'm curious on how Mark Driscoll stacks up against the "average" MMA fighter in the ring.
@AndrewAurelio I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one who caught that. Arrogance of the most viscous degree seeps from that man. I don't say this to judge, but rather to say that I am saddened to see a man of Mark Driscoll's apparent character elevated to a place of power within the body of Christ. May God's will be done in MarsHill Church, regardless.
All things all lawful to me but not all things are profitable to me category..Im not sure about Driscoll guy though everything from the name of his Church, which by the way is the only church I know that has Wi'FI and Coffee Shops down to the ripped jeans and cursing behind the pitpul does'nt exactly or bibically scream Reverend to me. I look at the fruit and don't see much difference from the world. I dont see James 1:19 Be quick to hear, slow to speak & slow to wrath when I see him.
I think this pastor is very immature...... by the way... I love fighting, and I love watching ufc fights... but I have taper down due to my belief in Jesus Christ. Im not a pastor.... but fighting and conflict, and emotions of inflicting pain and trying to kill someone does not originate with Jesus.....so you know who it originates with.
@libbyandtai Samson? He was weak...100% foolish. The guy was appointed by God but he was a wreckless fool. Joshua on the other hand, now there was a strong man. His army conqured more then what Samson ever did in his life time. Taking the promise land by force killing all who apposed God at the sake of His glorious name. He too had said in a speech to the men of Israel that 1 man had killed 1000 enemies as proof that God was with them. Was a walk in the park for them, God is good.
@Danthious Your SO ARROGANT. First off all of US are WEAK! period. ALL MEN are WEAK GOD makes us Strong he uses our weakness to Glorify him Abram Lied Moses Murdered Jonah was a Coward and Jesus lead himself as a Lamb to be Slaughtered for us only Jesus's Weakness Glorifys GOD Remember you shouldnt compare Joshua to Samson we allways should compare ourselfs to Jesus Samson Never Drank cut his hair or touched the dead he was a STRONG man in subjective view but...
@Danthious but he was weak because of his Sin Nature just like Joshua and every man except jesus we are all sinners but if you want to compare acomplishments then you miss my point and act a Pharasie It must have been hard for samson to be betrayed by His Woman and his enemy it teaches us how to be Strong but he Glorifys God in his faith to just like josh so your saying because Josh's men Killed more that it honored GOD no that honors MAN Samsons tragic but Bold
@Danthious i am NOT bringing Josh down to bring Samson up i am just Simply Admiring the things he did he Chose in his Life to never Drink Drinking isnt a Sin (getting drunk is) but Most men couldnt chose to NOT drink at least once in there life samsons an example of being a Different type of man if he drank he wouldnt have sinned agaist GOD he would have sinned against his parents i wouldnt call him weak to his face. so why would you? comparing mans acomplishment isnt GOOD but
@Danthious but Honor GOD in all that we Do is good. thats faith believing in GODS promises GOD promised him Super Strength he recieved that promise if he didnt drink he didnt touch the dead and didnt cut his hair think about it he was NEVER drunk with Delilah he never was even tipsy he never let his hair agrivate him by its Length which i am sure was longer then Christian media would want you to Percieve He never touched the Dead those are HARD tasks how is THAT foolish?
Keep in mind, Mark, that all though we are meant to be masculine, our masculinity is marred by a fallen nature. The urge to bludgeon another man to the point of begging for mercy or unconsciousness is probably not a good thing.
This guy doesn't know how to interpret the bible. Nothing purer than 2 guys fighting? How about 2 guys helping the poor and needy? Or praying and worshiping the Lord? Promoting kids to fight at recess? What!?!?! Is Mark Driscoll even a Christian???? Way to teach your kids to forgive and turn the other cheek.
I wouldn't be surprised if Mars Hill church devolves into a "Caesar's Legion" type autocratic, utilitarian society that treats women as chattel and glorifies violence and machismo above all else.
"Cry a lot," You mean like Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane and numerous other dudes from the Old and New Testament (buncha queers).
Americans and humans internationally always go to the sexual...usually it's perverted like some of the comments made here...look inside yourselves and try to understand why you think, speak and type these morbid, perverted things...God created male and female....instead of attacking a man's manhood-someone who has never given you any reason to think that way of him...look at the world around you and contemplate the images and perverted way of thinking that it is trying to influence you with...
Reminds me of the stereotypical, arrogant, steroid- pill-popping, high-school jock who deep down is so insecure about his own sexuality that he has nothing better to do than bash gays & the other poor, less-fortunate of the male-species who fail to live up to his standards of macho manliness. From the descriptions given of Jesus in the New Testament, Jesus seems to represent everything Mark despises in a man.
Heck yeah! Nothing like two guys trying to dominate the other, each sweating and grunting as they passionately express their masculinity in a contest of stamina and willpower, seeing who can outlast the other in a display of testosterone...
...wait, what the heck is this guy talking about? What's MMA? This isn't about his last date?
I agree with GioSafari09: The easy way out, the less strong and courageous way out, is through violence and force. It takes way more inner strength, courage, and boldness to "overcome evil with good" and "turn the other cheek". It doesn't mean Christians have to be passive, and in fact Jesus was all about confrontation, but He did so with a foundation of love, with the motive to boldly proclaim the Truth.
I resent the notion that I'm any less of a man simply because I don't get kicks (pardon the pun) out of beating the shit out of people (I know that I couldn't anyway and I don't care.. true manhood doesn't depend on it). It takes a lot more courage and strength to confront violence with peace than with still more violence.
So this is one example of masculinity: two adolescent schoolboys throwing down, probably as a result of their misogynistic fathers who abuse them and their moms at home. Mark, time and time again, has proven himself to be a "simple" thinker, preaching from his own dangerous ideology and ignoring the harmful after effects of his teaching. If this isn't veiled misogyny I don't know what is.
Jesus didn't even get married, I mean. So, if a guy is NOT in the ring fighting, or if he is peace loving and able to solve disputs without a raise fist, then he is fat and lazy? STFU, Mark. Ugh.
Are you kidding me? I haven't heard such a load of crap in...well, almost ever. I, for one, cannot stand MMA. I find most of the local guys who are into MMA and "fight" in MMA (AKA, overly tanned dudes kind of wrestling) are legit, Ed Hardy wearing douche bags, but that's a personal opinion. There's nothing manly about fighting, anymore then drinking beer or watching football makes you manly. Oh, wait, Jesus did none of the above. Weird. Jesus didn't even get
It's no different than anything else. It depends on the intention and the heart that makes it sin, not the action itself. Some fight for sport, and I see nothing wrong with that. They can tap out anytime it's too much and they don't kick each other in the balls because it hurts to bad they eliminate this. If one fighter uses his abilities to protect his family great. If one uses it to murder his family he's not a real man. If one is cocky then that's sin. A gentleman can fight too.
I have nothing against UFC, but this is just a load of bullshit. I am pretty sure that Jesus and john the baptist didn't hop in a cage and beat the hell out of each other to decide who the real man was... they more likely finger painted their feelings out
@danj589 "thou shall not steal" you steal things in football, soccer, basketball, water polo, rugby, baseball, so would you call these sports sins as well? My point is that mma is about competing just like every other sport on the planet. As long as an mma fight is not personal, it's only a competition. When you use one of god's commands in the context of sports, it shows that you don't fully understand the purpose of that command. I don't believe in fighting or war, but i love martial arts.
@danj589 I think you are confirming his point. Men do have a side that likes to punch things and break stuff, and we can either suppress it, act on it without thought, or act on it in a safe and healthy way. If we fight in anger, then it is absolutely wrong. We turn the other cheek when someone hits us out of anger, but me and my guy friends wrestle and fight all the time. I agree most MMA fighters do not have this attitude, but if something like this is done correctly, I think its fine.
@BrendonJD You should read Tertullian's thoughts on The Games. Why do men engage in MMA? The purpose is vacant. Tertullian's estimation of the Roman games: they are an iniquity. But hey, it's not actually IN the Bible, so to be a good Protestant, technically you don't have to listen to the Church Fathers (who gave us the Bible). ;)
@BrendonJD You don't seem to get what I'm saying, so I won't drag this out another round. But I'm sure Jesus of Nazareth had a taste for concussions, especially those delivered to the glory of God the Father!
@BrendonJD "Clearly in the context..." Is that context your context, or do you have access to THE context of the Sermon on the Mount? Think think about it.
But yeah, maybe Mars Hill can decorate their cross (the symbol of sacrificial non-violent love) with boxing gloves, jock straps, mouthpieces, and bloodied strips of nose gauze for their next stage set. Prizefightin' Jesus would be bout it bout it.
Yes, this is why Jesus came. So his followers could better market themselves to a violence-obsessed culture. I suppose it's being incarnational or something. or allowing insecure Christian boys to feel like men.
Honestly it takes more of a man to practice cheek-turning and self control. I have an inkling that's what Jesus was into.
@wackywireless Are you really that ignorant? On average 10 people die a year from american football. Related to direct hits on field. Thats more than world wide boxing. More than world wide MMA. This is fact, statistically proven and calculated. Just be thankful you have the internet giving you the illusion that your opinion matters.
@wackywireless The internet gives me the illusion to talk to you rudely? Third grade english maybe? You don't get out much do you? You think the internet is the only place people speak their mind? Your naivety concerning people and their motives shows you're just an internet troll. Welcome to reality bud, not only would I say these things but I would gladly slap you for your ignorance, something your mother should of done.
I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. ~Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
give it a few years. football has been around a long time. As MMA gains in popularity then you will see the side affects per athlete rise. The long term side effects of being deliberately punched in the head are not good. lol
@finessewes9119 You don't get punched repeatedly as in boxing. Fights end quickly or turn into a chess match, but either way, shots to the head bring the match to a quick conclusion or fights are won by various submission and choke holds. Boxers absorb head shots round after round and the winner may even suffer more damage than the loser.
@lousinup I did not say in comparison to boxing. Whenever you enter an arena to do battle and put your body on the line there are injuries. Especially if the objective is to deal the most pain to the opposing athlete (via fist, leg and body). It is some brutal stuff.

Luke 3:14
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
Do violence to no man...
It's interesting that a "pastor" who claims to teach from the Bible and the Bible only neglects the teachings of Christ.

Pfsif 4 months ago
It's a sport, God can use an MMA fighter just like He can use a Football player or a ballerina. You can be Christ against culture, Christ above culture, or Christ in culture, it's a matter of opinion, mine is Christ in culture. MMA can be used as a witnessing tool.
LeviBenji 4 months ago 2
@LeviBenji I totally agree with you. this season of the ultimate fighter they have one guy who is a true follower of Christ. He fights for Jesus, he uses the skills that God blessed him with in a healthy way.
sav0405 3 months ago
@LeviBenji The is just ridiculous, i have no idea where you actually get this from. There is no way that Jesus would ever accept MMA, Boxing etc
hijakd69 1 month ago
@LeviBenji Christ strictly forbids the use of violence in the sermon on the mount. He also forbids it at his arrest. Read the fruit of the Spirit. It can't be clearer in Scripture. This is like arguing that men should go to strip clubs so they can witness to their friends from work. Watch porn so you can witness to your friends? It is not about Christ in culture, it is about the kingdom of peace, joy and righteousness.
timothyday321 1 month ago 3

"just shut-up and do what you're told" Mark is only one army short of a dictatorship.
ilikelazers 3 months ago 2
@ilikelazers I just want to point out that he doesn't completely bash the idea of MMA, just that he doesn't like the idea of two men beating the crap out of each other for no reason. Go watch the video where he talks about video games, it further illustrates his belief, and mine as well, that men need to start fighting for things worth fighting for. Also, Driscoll specifically talks about how men are made for combat, so he acknowledges that we naturally like stuff like MMA.

ChristianPilgrim86 7 months ago 5
I resent the notion that I'm any less of a man simply because I don't get kicks (pardon the pun) out of beating the shit out of people (I know that I couldn't anyway and I don't care.. true manhood doesn't depend on it). It takes a lot more courage and strength to confront violence with peace than with still more violence.
GioSafari09 8 months ago
So this is one example of masculinity: two adolescent schoolboys throwing down, probably as a result of their misogynistic fathers who abuse them and their moms at home. Mark, time and time again, has proven himself to be a "simple" thinker, preaching from his own dangerous ideology and ignoring the harmful after effects of his teaching. If this isn't veiled misogyny I don't know what is.

A gentleman can fight too.
solaphyde 8 months ago

devmanification 6 months ago
@danj589 "thou shall not steal" you steal things in football, soccer, basketball, water polo, rugby, baseball, so would you call these sports sins as well? My point is that mma is about competing just like every other sport on the planet. As long as an mma fight is not personal, it's only a competition. When you use one of god's commands in the context of sports, it shows that you don't fully understand the purpose of that command. I don't believe in fighting or war, but i love martial arts.
clarkdannyclarkdanny 6 months ago
@danj589 Don't take excerpts from the Word and use them out of context. :)
PogsProd 6 months ago

But hey, it's not actually IN the Bible, so to be a good Protestant, technically you don't have to listen to the Church Fathers (who gave us the Bible). ;)
thepriesthood 1 year ago
@BrendonJD You don't seem to get what I'm saying, so I won't drag this out another round. But I'm sure Jesus of Nazareth had a taste for concussions, especially those delivered to the glory of God the Father!
thepriesthood 1 year ago
@BrendonJD "Clearly in the context..." Is that context your context, or do you have access to THE context of the Sermon on the Mount? Think think about it.
But yeah, maybe Mars Hill can decorate their cross (the symbol of sacrificial non-violent love) with boxing gloves, jock straps, mouthpieces, and bloodied strips of nose gauze for their next stage set. Prizefightin' Jesus would be bout it bout it.
thepriesthood 1 year ago
Yes, this is why Jesus came. So his followers could better market themselves to a violence-obsessed culture. I suppose it's being incarnational or something. or allowing insecure Christian boys to feel like men.
Honestly it takes more of a man to practice cheek-turning and self control. I have an inkling that's what Jesus was into.

finessewes9119 6 months ago
@finessewes9119 You don't get punched repeatedly as in boxing. Fights end quickly or turn into a chess match, but either way, shots to the head bring the match to a quick conclusion or fights are won by various submission and choke holds. Boxers absorb head shots round after round and the winner may even suffer more damage than the loser.

@lousinup I did not say in comparison to boxing. Whenever you enter an arena to do battle and put your body on the line there are injuries. Especially if the objective is to deal the most pain to the opposing athlete (via fist, leg and body). It is some brutal stuff.
