I went on that retrojunk site. The owner needs to do his or her homework. They have a MTV ad from 1978. It didn't launch until 81. it took only about 8 months to get it together and financed. I believe it was conceived around late 1980 and launched around aug of 81. Also, he talks about going down memory lane in 1997. He talks about the 90s like it's 1965. LOL add another 10-15 years before we talk about the 90s as "Retro"

For those who don't know, the R.O.B. was never intended by Nintendo to be anything more than a Trojan Horse to get the NES into toy stores. Because of the industry crash of 1984, toy stores were reluctant to stock a new video game system. R.O.B. made the NES look more like a toy than a game console.

It also helped that Nintendo got Worlds of Wonder (maker of Teddy Ruxpin) to distribute the NES in the U.S.
