  • Wonderful. I'm 45 and remember every word of that commercial. I took all four of my kids there whenever we visit Boston. Boston is always my home!

  • I remember this commercial from the late 70's!

  • I do remember the dolphin show..

  • "I can walk like a penguin" - Classic! Every kid in New England quoted this commercial for years! Love it!

  • Thank you so much for posting this! BIG TIME memories . Wow....totally blown away by the memories I'm having :)

  • This was always playing on Channel 56 out of Boston well into the mid-80's...

  • LOL, at first I couldn't remember if this was late 70s or early 80s, but then I saw the mother's Dorothy Hamill haircut; and I knew ;)

    Great post, thanks!

  • I saw an ad for the aquarium on the Boston Globe's website and immediately thought of this commercial, and here it is! Funny that they haven't changed their logo. Thanks for posting, great find!

  • Totally tubular to the max!

    xoxo

    The Clarences

  • This and the Museum of Science are so closely associated; I wonder if they were both made by the same studio??

  • I love this commercial! It so reminds me of my youth in Boston ! I was born in 64 , this commercial was Definatly from 77- 79. It is so weird how the "I can walk like a penguin" sticks with u! To this day, if someone says penguin, I revert back to this! Btw. I am so surprised Seth McFarlaine has not re done this for family guy!!

Great memory jog! The mom in this commercial looks like a threes company extra!

  • Our class from Maine is in this Commercial during the dolphin show . I was in 7th or 8th grade so this had to be around 1978 or so.

  • In addition to going to the Aquarium together, the family went to the same barber.

  • Somebody made a joke today about a girl waddling like a penguin... and of course I did the old "I can walk like a penguin".... nobody had any idea what the hell I was talking about.

    Thanks.

  • I was born in 78 and I remember this so vividly!!!! It played well into the early 80's! That place was so much cooler then than it is now. No more dolphin shows on the boat, the harbor seals are enclosed, the giant dolphin fountain in front is gone:( they kept the sculpture but placed it way infront of the new IMAX theater where noone sees it anymore!

    Thank you for posting this!!!!!!

  • I recall watching this in the 80's -- that dorky, "I can walk like a Penguin!" Ack!!! It's all coming back to me now!!!

  • I grew up in Connecticut and this commercial was on ALL THE TIME in the 80s!!!!

  • I noticed that people in the 70's, 80's were more erotic

  • "My name is Karen."

    -Museum of Science commercial girl

  • Ohh the memories! This commercial was constantly on. I used to drive my sister crazy by saying, "I can walk like a penguin..." Thanks for posting this gem! It takes me back! Loved it! It was always on channel 56 out of Boston and if you were a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's in new england, channel 56 was the channel to watch. Banana Splits, Lost in Space, Three's Comapny, etc. Great commercial, great time in life, great memory! :) Thanks again!

  • @Jmriccitelli WLVI?

  • someone shoot me

  • I havent seen this one in years. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

  • Sad to say that they haven't exactly maintained the NE-Aquarium, I think the last time they cleaned it was 1978!

  • The Winter Home of Andre the Seal

  • The line "I CAN WALK LIKE A PENGUIN!!!" still reverberates in my brain today.

  • It's kind of like 'There Heeeeere'

  • OK, I just went to the NEAQ this weekend and I can't for the life of me figure how the old interior layout of the main building meshes with the modern one. Specifically: the shark appears to be swimming in the big pool that makes up the entire first floor (which now holds penguins only). Considering that most of the walkways are essentially bridges over this pool, there's NO EFFIN' WAY they had sharks in it... is there?

  • They do have sharks in the big tank but not the kinds of sharks that are really dangerous.

They did have a hammerhead shark a long time ago but eventually the hammerhead got old and died.

  • This ad ran for so damn long!

  • You can't lean over into the seal pen anymore :(

  • and nor should you!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can walk like a penguin! classic line that's been reused in my family forever!

  • wow...I remember that

  • Wow! Now I can finally explain why I sometimes say "I can walk like a pengiun"!

  • I was there since the late 1980's-mid 1990's when I was younger.

  • So long, and thanks... for all the fish.

I liked the MoS better; the only thing at the aquarium that turned me on was the blacklights on that ramp...

  • Woah! Does that bring back memories or what!?! *Sigh* To be a kid again...

  • I always saw this on WLVI, well into the 80's. I'm pretty sure at some point in my childhood I had a nightmare of Karen throwing a starfish at me.

  • man, i remember that one

  • ah the good old 70's

  • Hey Mom, the dolphin SHOP, always sounded like the kid said that. ha ha

  • I still say the son sounds like he says "Hey Mom the dolphin SHOP", gotta be that Massachusetts accent. :)

  • They dont even have dolphins any more and they havnt done the sea lion shows in years :(, One of the sea lions was called tyler(my brothers name)...not that ayone cares;)

  • I never knew that they had dolphins at that aquarium.

  • I just noticed that the little girl in this named Karen...

    ("How does that feel Karen?")

...and so is the girl in the Museum of Science commercial...

    ("My name is Karen.")

    ("My name is Karen.")

    What's up with that??

  • I noticed that too! I figured someone in advertising had a daughter named Karen.

  • i used to have nightmares falling into the giant tank from above, they have this part or parts of the wall there where it is clear if i'm right. also nightmares of falling from the entrance into that huge bottom water pool u see in the ad from 8 or whatever number floors up it was. man, that aquarium was AWESOME! it had a GIANT TANK in the middle that was like 20 floors up or something, and the building was built around it with a huge pool on the last floor and wall tanks on the walls, TONS MORE

  • It's funny, I thought the tank was giant too. Though, when I went there last, maybe 2 years ago, it wasn't as big as it seemed when I was 7 or 8 years old! Though I know the size of that hasn't really changed. Still cool though. And I also was afraid of falling in that tank..

  • Me too. The drawings of the sharks on the wall freaked me out as well.

  • Funny, when I went to the NEAQ recently, there were several people *holding their kids over the giant tank* so they could see the sharks and giant rays better. I had the damndest time holding my tongue...

  • This is a classic from my childhood and it is kind of sad because I haven't seen a commercial for the Aquarium or the Museum of Science since I was a kid.

    Are these places advertising anymore?

  • Doesn't really seem like it, does it? I see lots more advertising for these places in print or on the MBTA instead.

  • The dolphin show was fantastic (I was 13)! That's something the Aquarium should bring back!

  • omg. i knew almost all of the words by heart.

  • ME TOO!!!!!! Memories!!!!! Wow

  • thanks for the flashback, damn I'm old

  • the good ol day when the best channel in town was wlvi 56 now there are a thousands channels but still i miss these days.

i remember in jr high there was this girl with leg braces and we use to mock her and say "i can walk like a penguin" kids are so krewl. you tube is insane with the things you can fine nbhs"94"

  • I can walk like a penguin! Man that was a huge time slap. That was keen.

  • i didn't know they had a dolphin show!!

i would like to see that. it's cool though to see how things were like back then.

  • Wow. I remember watching this when I was a kid. It brings back great memories. Thank you for posting.

  • Wow, does this commercial bring back memories from way way back, hah

  • OMG!! That one took me back. I remember this spot word for word. Amazing. Thank you so much for posting.

  • Wow, I haven't seen this since I was a kid! Thanks for posting!

  • Wow...ill flashback.

I actually met that "I can walk like a penguin" girl once.

  • I always wanted to smack tHAT PENGUIN CHICK.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I haven't seen it for decades, but was still up and ready (in my business suit) to brag along with, "I can walk like a penguin!" You made my day!

  • nice to hear, you're very welcome.

  • its really cool to go there~~~!!! i liked the penguins and turtles the most,

  • This ad went on well into the mid 80s - even then we laughed at how 70s this ad looked.

  • I ran even later than that! "I didn't realize you wrote such bloody awful poetry..." ;-)

  • I remember this ad and going there about 1977. They had an open shark tank and signs telling you not to throw coins into the tank. Coins = metal dissolved in water = bad for sea life.

  • I remember this ad.

  • Found it :) I can walk like a penguin

  • GAH!!! I love these ads!! Thank you Thank you thank you!!

  • This comercial brings me back to my early childhood. I grew up in Boston and every time tou saw this add you really wanted to go to the Aqaurium! Things were so much more interesting back then it seemed. We wondered. We were a very innocent generation..one of the last.

  • You can see my classroom in this. We were at the dolphin show when they filmed this commercial.

  • Three cheers to yourself and others who post these classic New England video clips!!

  • Karen is a bit slow.

  • How does that feel Karen?

  • "I am unfamilar with that combination of hydrogen and oxygen, do tell"

  • This commercial is the best! I can remember this being on all the time when I was growing up in Massachusetts. I can walk like a penguin!

  • I love the aquarium!!!!

  • everytime any of my friends and I see a penguin to this day --- we still say "I can walk like a penguin!" It was such a lame and funny line then and still is !!!

    CLASSIC

  • Yes!! "I can walk like a penguin!" I'm so glad to know I'm not the only nutcase that still says that...25 years later!

  • Ha! Me too!

  • To this day I still say "I can walk like a penguin!!"

  • I saw this commercial hundreds of times between the late 70's and early to mid 80's but haven't seen it since, yet I remember it like I saw it yesterday!

  • um, this was in Pleasantville, right?

  • God that brings back memories. As I watched the video I could almost recite the commerical line by line... shows you how much they showed that commercial, or how much I watched TV!!

  • i volunteer there

    wicked awesome

    no more dolphins tho :|

  • i can walk like a peguin - ive een saying this for 20 years .. i think im the only one that knew what i was talking about

  • That is the first thing thousands of kids around New England think of when they hear of that aquarium.

  • I say that all the time as well and only a few people I grew up with know what I am talking about.

  • I say it ALL th time, and now I live in Michigan. People think I'm nuts!

  • lol, I went to Boston over for the summer with friends and ended up working in this place! Weird seeing this ad! Although I remember more of people complaining that there are no dolphins any more! Oh well, fun times none the less!

  • Worked for the new england aquarium last summer as well. Out in the reef the wee outdoor cafe. Whata place!

  • I always remembered the commercial ending with "The New England Aqarium, where it's fun to find out!". I wonder if they kept the commercial for years, but changed the bumper slogan at the end? Ahwell.

  • "where it's fun to find out" was the Boston Museum of Science ad.

  • hey farhathaniff

i agree, i would of ben embarrassed myself, lol

if that little girl was with me , i would of picked her up, threw her in the water and say "not only can u walk like a penquin, but now u can join them" ,lol

at the end it says "where families get together", i dont think that happens anymore, now youll see thugs and punks there , lol

this is a 70's commercial, look at the cars in the parking lot, lol

  • oh yea,

this is from the 70's, look at the cars in the parking lot,,lol

  • Thanks for that memory, I havent seen that commercial in years. For that matter been there in years.

  • my brother and I ages 44 and 41 still to this day always say "i can walk like a penguin" what a blast to find this commercial. Thanks alot for posting this!!!!!

  • retarted girl.. haha, dad just took her away when she said that, maybe it was an embarrasment to the whole family. lol

  • "I CAN WALK LIKE A PENGUIN!!"

  • I found the vintage Museum of Science 70's ad you people were looking for! Go to mos dot org. Then vistior info/about the museum/history of the museum. the vid is on the bottom right of the page. Someone should upload that to youtube.

  • The mom says - How does that feel karem?

  • Terrific!! And yet after all these years I still can't figure out what the heck the mom says to Karen when she picks up the starfish.

  • "It's gonna bit you, Karen"

  • You mean, "It's gonna exude it's digestive organ and absorb your hand, Karen!"

  • I went on a school field trip here in the mid-70's & saw Hoover the talking seal.

    HOOVER!

    Great memories!

  • OMG - I was totally able to quote the whole thing as it played. That thing must have been buried deep in my subconscious.

  • YES!!!

I've been looking for this for the past 3 years

I don't hate the little girl as much as I use too - I guess I grew up a little today

  • OMG i remember this!!!!!!! flood of memories, i think i need to lay down now.

  • That girl needs to be slapped.

  • Robolon from Mars it was, I think. Yes, It was awesome.

  • Does anyone remember the "I'm from Mahhhs and I eat lots of canday bahhhs" commercial? It was a local PSA in the Boston area around the late 70s. A true classic (in my mind, at least) but I've yet to dig up a reference to it... I'd love to see it again though.

  • "I can walk like a penguin" haha funny

  • THANK YOU!

  • hmmmm, my comment didn't show up? maybe I can't post links...the ocean wave wave commercial is on the museum of science website. Google "History of the Museum of Science" - over on the right half way down is the kid in front of the wave tank (wearing my T-shirt from 1982, apparently)

  • I am not the only one who remembers this on WLVI 56 outta Boston. I grew up in East Providence and 56 was the only decent UHF station around other than WSBK 38. Anyone know what happened to Uncle Dale?

  • Uncle Dale is Dale Dorman I believe. He is still on the air in Boston. WODS 103.1 . You can listen to it online.

  • 103.3

  • I haven't seen this thing in years and it brought back tons of memories of TV as a kid, and also visits to the Aquarium. If memory serves me, they no longer have a dolphin show. It's sea lions I believe.

  • Oh My Gawd!

  • I'm from CT,and I think I went here as a kid,it was awesome

  • My brothers and I STILL say "I can walk like a penguin." Someone has to have the one with our follow-up line, "What makes an ocean wave wave?"

  • I thought the "ocean wave wave" line came right before "I can walk like a penguin."

  • Ocean wave was in the museum of science commercial

See mos DOT org SLASH media SLASH video SLASH Fun_To_Find_Out_1977.mp4

  • That's too funny! I thought so too! We've got the aquarium and science museum commercials mixed up.

  • I grew up in the 70s/80s as well in NH, channel 56 was the best for cartoons back then. This was played so many times it's etched in our minds, now I agree with everyone else-SOMEONE PLEASE UPLOAD THE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE COMMERCIAL. "This is the captain speaking...come in Earth"!

  • oh my god, I grew up in NH in the 70's and 80's and watched this commercial thousands of times on TV 56, i still know the script by heart...I would kill for a copy of the Boston Museum of Sciene Ad ("my name is karen") ("why does he have such funny little front legs") if you ever come across it!!!

  • Thanks for posting that, I had been thinking of going to the new england aquarium soon and it reminded me of this commerial, hopefully someone will post the museum of science commercial too. It's fun to find out what your voice really sounds like.

  • Seriously. I can see what makes an ocean wave wave.

This is the Captain speaking, come in Earth.

  • Nice post. Used to see this all the time growing up in South Weymouth in the 70s.

  • I'd never thought I'd find this commercial. TV56 used to play it constantly while showing cartoons back then. I was growing up on the NH seacoast.

  • Growing up in the Boston area in the 1970s, I probably saw that commercial a thousand times.

  • Wow, I never thought I'd see this one again. YouTube rules.

  • There was another New England Aquarium vintage commercial where the father asks his kid if he wants to hold a Horseshoe Crab and he says "Naaahhh." Anyone have that one?

  • WOW, do I remember this one- my sister and I always used to pick on the "I can walk like a penguin" girl. Fun seeing that again!

  • Thanks for this! They aired this constantly during afternoon cartoons on Boston stations in the early '80s.

  • HEY!! I REMEMBER THAT COMMERCIAL!!!

  • This video brings back some good memories. I remember seeing it along time ago.

  • THANK YOU! I remember seeing this constantly in the early 80s..still remember the trumpet music and the "I can walk like a penguin". Cool seeing this for the first time in over 20 years!

  • It was from the seventies. I remeber it in '77. I was six. That damn penguin chick.

  • I, too, am positive this ad dates from the seventies, though it definitely did run through the early eighties. By then I was thinking, "Are they still running this thing?"

  • I remember this. Especially the synthesized trumpet music and the kid going "I can walk like a penguin". So funny!

  • My class was in the commercial so it had to be either 1976 or 1977.

  • Awesome! Anyone have the one with the line:

"What makes an ocean wave wave?"

  • Oops! That one was for the Museum of Science in Boston.

  • That was for Boston's Museum of Science but no one's posted it yet. Someone's GOT to have it, it was also on for years!

  • Webmaster for New England Aquarium weighing in here. Thanks for posting this--what a hoot! We've got a bunch of folks here looking at it and trying to narrow down when it first aired. Looks early-80s to us so far, based on the plaza configuration and the exhibits shown. Not to mention the cheezy music and retro clothes and haircuts. Might put it up on our site and invite people to guess on dating it. Thanks for turning it up!

  • Thanks for this! I've been there a few times.

  • What was the name of the tape? I remember seeing this ad constantly on WLVI TV56 in the early 1980s....they had this one and one from the Museum of Science. Thanks for sharing!

  • you're welcome, I sent you a message (it's not from a commercial tape or a comp available for sale)

  • derangedPostman: thanks. It may actually be from the time you described, I was going by clothing/hair and the tape I pulled it from had 70's commercials on it (but also early 90's stuff). aman1016: it was from a tape so it would be coincidence really : )

  • OH...MY...GOD!!!! I TOTALLY remember this. love2register, you and I must hail from the same part of the country!

  • its pretty awesome, thx =)

  • wow no problem, glad you liked it. If you (or anyone else?) remembers seeing this ad and can date it let me know, I'm curious.

  • I think I remember that commercial from a long, long time ago, early nineties or late 80's. The whole "walk like a penguin" bit seems to be familiar. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if it was made in the 70's and just stayed on the air for a really long time.
