Hi, just curious what cam you had in this engine. I am doing a a rebuild on a 229 3.8 V6 for my 1981 El Camino. I am havin troubles finding a good cam, I'd really like something that produces a choppy idle. Any suggestions? Thanks.
To be honest with you, the best thing that you can do is go with a computer upgrade. Unless you are going after all the power, this should get you noticeable increases without opening up your engine. If you are after more, modifications can be done and components changed
The heads are X-11's but they have had massive amounts for porting, blending and other modifications done to them including bigger valves, springs, retainers, locks and a race valve job
Intake was a customer furnished Edelbrock single plane. Scott did port matching and other custom machining to improve flow. The carb is a Quick Fuel 650 HR with modifications. Not much on this engine is out of the box.
What you see is about the max you want to put to a stock block. We did do some mods to the block as well but it is not an aftermarket piece. We don't use Edelbrock carbs so we won't venture a guess there. We are at the limit for the factory bottom end as well. If you are looking for cheap, this isn't it. If you are looking for unique, this is one way to do it.
i dont know if i should build the 229 i got or drop a 350 in how much power can you get out of the 229 with eldebrock cam heads and carb and will the bottom end hold up

Can you guys do the same thing for Buicks 3800 II V6? It's fuel injected though.
Very impressive.

This was an even fire engine. However; MSD does make a distributor to accomodate either type,

how did you do semi-even firing with MSD?

Thanks for checking us out and thanks for the comment. It was a little more than a cam change and a 4 barrel carb, but it sure was fun..

underrated engine (sorta like the 305 - it can make power)...110HP from the factory to 500...nice.
Even just taking a stock 229 and using the EDL2112 cam and a 4barrel really wakes it up

It's an Edelbrock intake with massive porting done on it to match the ports on his heads.
