Hooks, fabulous video, this clarified so much for me. Thank you. PS: Using the simple songs really drives these lessons home. I remember hearing "Can't get no..." on AM radio when it first came out - perfect choice for this lesson.
@roas2 While that is true, some of the most famous classical pieces have one or 2 extremely memorable melodies, such as Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, or Beethoven's 5th Symphony
@REX05011 From what I understand it can or can not be. It is a piece of music that literally hooks you, like the one he showed form the cardingans, it's in the begginning of the song. I guess most of the time it is the chorus though.
@esteban3527343 you don't need to listen to this man's song just to analyze!! all you need to do is study big hits because a song is a song. you just have to make it worth listening to.
@xcjxmx crucial -.- i mean okay listen to songs on the radio, they alll r sooo repetative.. i meanhow many songs do u know that r like a continous chourus? lol soooo many especially pop culture songs. think of it like poetry.. lol its hard.. i find i write better under pressure. l make a due date
oh and think of a topic, like i mean, breack ups, love, what ever.
ps, if ur really stuck i lovvvv to rhyme.. give me something to work with an i can make it rhyme
This is a great video, man. I've always thought of using hooks as selling out, but after medidating on all the great songs (Nirvana pops into my head) that use a subtle hook, that's so fucking untrue. Still, important not to hang on them, but no guilt to use a few every now and then, lol.
I personally dont like a lot of System of a Down, but I find their use of hooks to be remarkable. They sell you a hook, but hidden deep within it and the rest of the song is usually a political or social message. Get em hooked, then get em thinking. Myself as an experimental musician, I think of hooks in the same way. Get em hooked but in a creative way. Then get them thinking.
This is a VERY smart and helpful lesson. The examples were VERY helpful. And those are all very catchy. I actually couldn't help but sing along or play along to most of them.
thanks man brilliant :)

i cant think of many classical pieces that have 'hooks' unless you count melodies that are much longer than the examples you gave
these are great videos though, thanks!
