@waiter1971 Someone did write a back story. It's called "Vulnavia or the Mechanical Princess" by Steve Duffy. It's in his collection of stories The Moment of Panic. Personally I think Vulnavia is a spirit being rather than one of Phibes' wind-up dolls.
My absolute favorite movie in the horror category! I pop it in and watch it every once in awhile, scared the shit out of me when I was a kid! Then again good ol' Vinnie Price did that to everyone I think. The acting in this movie is superb, the second Phibes flick is not nearly as good.
Sometimes the most difficult acting is to show no emotion at all. A lovely woman who passed to young. This is one of my all time favorite movies and I just adore Ms. North in this role.
There was something terrifyingly beautiful to this-especially to a 13 year old boy with wide open eyes at a local movie theater on a Saturday afternoon. Plus: I wanted Vulnavia so bad.
What had my mind wondering as a boy (and still does) is how the surgeon's son was abducted - seduced, by Vulnavia and brought to Phibes mansion... then anesthetized?
Quick bio: Real name Virginia Anne Northrop. Born London 1/1/45. Worked for agency Models 1 during sixties while making movies (5) on the side. Married wealthy industrialist Gordon White in 1974. Had one child, Lucas. Became Lady Virginia when hubby was created Baron White of Hull in 1991. Divorced 1992. Died of liver cancer 2004.
OK - admit to being warped, but towards the end of the movie, Phibes is alone doing the last murder and the next scene, the Doctors son is on the operating table - I always wondered if they cut the scene that showed her going to the doctors house and kidnapping the boy. OK, I was a teen at the time, but my mind did wonder...
3:31 i've been waiting for five years to see that again.

Virginia was lovely, but VALLI KEMP' (in the sequel) was a lot sexier, more beautiful and somewhat more amusing.
Virginia couldn't stop BLINKING! lol

I've kind of wondered if Vulnavia wasn't some exiled Russian entertainer, she has something Eastern about her.

BTW... She is also on the WomWam(dot)net site - which explores the whole "women doing things to men" fetish/ Femme Fatale archaeotype

That site is not working at all for me. It just comes up blank and it says it has finished loading but I do not see anything. Why is that?

She was also in "Deadlier Than The Male" - another Femme Fatale flick from 1967

Yes, and also "Some Girls Do" where she played a lovely but likely lethal robot.
