One of the reasons they have these fights is to see which male they want for their herd. Just like nature in a way, the stronger, meaner bull will make stronger healthier calves. Some, not all, of these matches are in auction rings and whoever comes out on top is worth more and is destined to be the Alpha male in the herd. The loser is still sold but obviously for a lesser price and has a much bigger chance to be slaughtered. Plus, there's a lot of gambling. At least they don't kill each other.

I'm not one for putting two animals into a ring to fight myself,but this wasn't violent at all. No harm was done to either animal nor is there harm done in any buffalo fight. They don't kill the animals like they do in other countries.
