I found that David is one of the greatest player that got the oomph for beautiful Tone. More like Segovia in a way but in much more flexible way. This piece is great when played by him
I like both Russell's and Morel's version. Russell's has a polished vibe in a Villa-Lobos Choro No. 1 way, and Morel has it in a throatier and raspier way. I think if they were playing identical guitars the feeling from the music would be closer.
I don't see why people are arguing who's interpretation is better. The beautiful thing about music is that it can be performed many different ways and, most of the time, they are all viable performances. Who cares which is better? Just sit back and enjoy a beautiful performance.
@PANRafauWhite There is no best. Perhaps you appreciate David Russell's version more (I personally did) but that does not mean that it is better. Especially as Morel most likely played it as he intended it to be.
The technique, especially in his left hand, allows the musicality to shine through his playing. Compared to Jorge Morel he isc a much more talented a guitarist.
He is a classical guitarist but this piece isn't really classical. It's rather a Barazil jazz or samba, but he is a great gutarist, so I think all the same it's very good
This piece is far from be really a Brazilian dance; is more a remembrance and a version stylized of a bump. However, Russell it touches very well and is excellent as such.. for who will want to know like is really a Brazilian dance. ..tecla Rafael Rabello, Yamandú Coast or Landmark pear tree (or Paulo Bellinati).
THis piece is far from being a Brazilian dance; it is more a remembrance and stylistic version of Bossa (musical style). However, Russell plays it really well and is excellent as such... for who wants to know what Brazilian dance is really suppose to sound like then search for Rafael Rabello, Yamandu Costa or Marco Pereira (or Paulo Bellinati).
He even stops the bass strings vibrating on the alternate bass! Ridiculously pedantic and nit-picky... This is dancing music, not an "intellectual" composition. It needs passion, spontaneity, intensity and drive.
"topmusiccritic"s should know more about music. Alow me...1st- David Russell IS a classical player. 2nd- It sounds like he's reading it because he did read it, probably twenty + years ago before he memorized it and played it 10,000 times. Please stick to pop!!!!!!!
If you're looking for an uptight classical approach, you'll find it. The same also applies if you are looking for subtle nuances of shading in each of the voices. Yes, he plays all the notes and rhythms, but he puts his own artistic stamp on it, which is definitively David Russell. Also, anyone who is a self-acclaimed "top-anything" loses all credibility to me.
I grew up listening to Segovia, Willams, and Parkening. It was about a year ago when someone told me to listen to David Russell. WOW !!! What a Talent! Since then I've bought about 12 of his cd's. So much "Being and Beauty" in his playing.
I'm so grateful that I seen him in concert recently and got to speak to him for a moment.
He has surely inspired me to continue to play and do my best to get my guitar playing to the next level. Thank you David Russell!!!!!!!
I watched this piece played by David in 1981. Ever since this Morel's piece has become very special one for me. Russell's performance is really vivid and exceiting. Thank you for posting.

Fact he created this tune doesnt mean he is the best in it.The chess are the best analogy..

Of course this has a jazzy feel! Latin and Samba both draw heavily on Jazz and Afro influences.
I can count many occasions where ii-V-i's are used, which are the building blocks of jazz.
And the frequent use of minor 9s, minor 6s, major 7s and half diminished!!
Russell's phrasing is just so plodding. 1.12... Where is the bagginess, the freedom!?
mibifinalist 3 years ago
nice! but too "russell" i prefer it a bit faster and sloppy, when playing this piece is not about control is about moving your body.
