Actually Xantia's original suspension is quite hard (even those older models with "softer" spheres). I currently have a '99 Xantia 1.8 16V Break with front suspension spheres switched to rear, and CX front spheres in front. It's better with that combination, but still rock hard when compared to my friend's CX.
People who mention that they drive a car with "sport suspension" actually mean that they drive a car from a brand that has a totall lack of knowledge how to build a comfortable, safe and MODERN chassis, a 50 year old Citroën is more modern and has a better ride then a lot of todays cars..a friend of me hated Citroëns for years, untill the gearbox of his Volkswagen broked down and he borowed one of my cars, he bought a Citroën himself a few weeks later..!!
I have a DS and an GS, and 2 two BX's..i really like the comfy and relaxed ride, when i'm a passenger in a car with hard seats and stiff suspension, my back hurts wihin a few minutes and i'm getting tired very quick. cars with "sporty" suspension are more noisy too, because reactions on bumps and holes are given harder to the bodywork of the car, springs and shock absorbers and other mechanical parts break down earlier too, and breaking and accelarating before and after every obstacle costs fuel
Citroën is the only carbrand that has brilliant comfort in combination with outstanding roadholding, the handling is always safe, even on 3 wheels! Peugeot and Renault made comfy cars too, but the last years they have the same "concrete" suspension like most German cars..old American cars are also comfy, but they have no safe roadholding at all. big Mercs and BMW's are quite comfy too, but only the topmodels. I really don't understand people who like "sporty suspension" and hard chairs.
As stated in the video. Statutory Insrument 1026 say's ' no speed humps shall be constructed with a height that exceds 100mm It's the law !! measure your humps and if they're too high contact the council and have them took up. " I did ".....: ))
I have a Japan spec suspension. Going at 60mph on speedbump will damage my wheel alignment or probably bend the rims. JDM cars tend to have a harder suspension, as you'll know, Japan have a very smooth roads. Not much bumps, no potholes, etc..
What a load of crap- 'The conservative party will rip them up if they get elected'. We live in an area which has a tory council (unfortunately) and they put all these bloody humps down our road! They are not even built properly and are falling to bits, and this cost a man £500 because one of the humps were so high it ripped his oil pan straight off the engine! The road needed re-surfacing and the money given to the council at the time by the previous government was wasted on all this crap!
your test was a lil innaccurate because you are maintain a constant over it the trick is to be accelerating as you come up to it so your knose doesnt dip down farther. also do that same test over a small bump and you'll get much different results
FYI. In america most of our speed bumps are Narrow in width and tall in height. So the faster you go over it, the less motion your vehicle goes through. You may create more g's but you also create less jerking motion which is felt more than the rebound of your vehicles suspension.
And thats a cheap xantia, he should have found an activa..... i had a diesel, 40mpg town, 50 motorway, good on the bumps, used it as a taxi, loved it, just not as much as my v6 xm.....
When people will stop comparing the fun in the car driving it sideways, they will notice that althought the germans feel good if you test them, the citroens will keep your back end from exploding every two minutes.
Being smooth is not being loose, i wish the journalist could make the difference ;)
I have a wrx... And serious back problems even with 15mph.

I had a 406 when I was a cabbie and use to take even the fiercest speed bumps at 30mph. After a while, the suspension didn't like it.

The ones which are screwed down onto the ground are cuntish. But at least a well placed scoop on a digger can take them up quite easily.

Should have bought an old Cx instead of the Xantia.
Best car ever on bad roads and for speeding over speedbumps.

They should us a yaw sensor and not a g meter. A yaw sensor is a more accurate detection of comofort than a g meter.

when I see a speed bump I floor it! It's a lot less punishing then tip toeing over it.

The test's flawed though. It concentrates on peak bump pressure rather than average movement (on all axis) which is felt as discomfort.
siraff2 2 years ago
So this proves that the most comfortable way of going over speed bumps is to...drive a Citroen!

Citroen make the best riding cars in the world. Although I must point out that the ride quality is better with all wheels over the speed bump!!
