I love alan watts and his teachings are fantastic, but i do have a question from the intro to this video if anyone has any thoughts please respond.

alan watts claims that the self noticed it was alone and it was afraid, but then after he states fear can come only from something other.

so if the self was alone but also afraid would that not imply that there was an other?

it is a story meant to get across an experiential point.

This happened to you as well. You were a baby and at some point you noticed that other was a fact and from that realization the ego has developed.

In other words, the word I became useful to you once you had the concept of yourself as separate from your mother.

In terms of Christian thought, there is the father and there is the logos which is his mind and thoughts. From the logos arises all other forms. It is a similar idea.
