By the time Lee starred in Style Wars, Lee had already retired from doing trains. Style Wars was the beginning of the end of real graffiti era in NYC.
i saw wild style when it first came out on 42nd street the deuce forty deuce....i remember i was 18 yrs old and got put out from a group home which was the daily norm , i was walkin up this block and i see lee at a car repair shop...all my spirits went up high..i was sooo happy excited, i loved the movie wildstyle i used to rap and wanted to be a famous emcee. but lee brushed me off and told me 'i aint with that rap shit no more' i was sooo hurt.
growing up in nyc in the 70s and 80s and seeing my first whole car LEE piece on the 6 line was like taking a trip somewhere. He is in my top 10 if not top 3.
thank you so much, that was totally dope! putting it to my favorite list right now. The best LEE pics i've ever seen!! The Hells Express is one of my absolute favorite pieces on ny trains.
Much respect to a legend of The Fabulous 5.
