I do think Jimmy Johnstone was the best in the world at what he did, yes. He played for one of the top teams in Europe, and he was destroying defences wherever he played. He scored goals, he created goals, he drew defenders to him, creating space for his teammates, and giving the rest of the team breathers when he took the ball for a walk during games. Teams the world over couldn't live with him when he was in full flight, and that includes Rangers and Baxter. Baxter was a great player, though.
Jim Baxter was a fantastic player, and I can see why people say he was the best player Scotland has produced. I just don't agree! Both Baxter and Johnstone had destructive mentalities. Jock Stein managed to keep a lid on Johnstones better than Scot Symon did with Baxter. I think Jinky made the most of his talent - and Baxter didn't! If I could pay to see either of those players at the top of their game today, Jimmy Johnstone is the one I would choose. But - that's just my opinion.

There's no one I can think of who compares to Jinky. By the way, I saw a post of yours where you said that George Best and Tom Finney were the best wingers Britain produced. I disagree with you about Best. Jinky was a better winger than Best. He was more skillful than Best. I saw the two of them play and I saw nothing from Best that dissuades me from that view. Best's ability to read a game was better, but that's it. Can't say about Finney, I never saw him play. Best was brilliant, though.
Jim Baxter and Jimmy Johnstone were extraordinary players and it's hard to compare them with anyone else. The game has changed since they played but I think they would both compare favourably with todays stars. Baxter had an arrogance about him that not many Scottish players have ever had. But he always looked graceful and elegant on the ball. Like he was born to do it. Scotland had some great players in the 60's and if they all had the arrogance and belief that Baxter had...well, who knows?

I think Baxter was better than Zidane, but he under achieved, imo. George Best wasn't overrated, Jinky was underrated. Not by the defenders he slaughtered, but by the English press and media. Scottish football wasn't poor in the 60's, and he played for the European champions. He done it at the highest level, and yet he rarely gets a mention. John Charles was the most versatile player Britain ever produced, but he was Welsh so won't get mentioned very often. I've seen a few items on TV about him.
mate the most versatile player ever is duncan edwards he was worldclass in each postion but your correct about charles he could fill a number of roles but i think he only played at center back and up front.
The thing is, we'll never know just how good Duncan Edwards was, will we? From what I've read and heard about him he was certainly a great player who know doubt would have been one of the all time greats, but we'll never know. Brian Clough, for example, could have gone on to be the greatest striker England ever had, because his goals per game record was phenomenal. But again, we'll never know, will we? I agree with you about ability because that's what I like. However, a striker can have loads of ability but if he doesn't score the goals, what use is he? McCoist had an ability to be in the right place at the right time, as has Kris Boyd. Not all strikers have that. Jimmy Grieves was playing in an era where defenders were like butchers dogs, and he had ability and goals in abundance. I like Shearer though, he's a great player. But I stick with Grieves because he was a better dribbler.

I think the only reason many people believe that Pele and Maradona were better than Jinky is because they both won World Cups which i dont think is fair on him as he could have easily walked into both the Brazillian and Argentininan teams. Alot of scottish players (or players in the SPL) have not got the credit they have deserved from other teams in the world just because the national team wasn't very good for a while. For example, people said Henrik Larsson would't cut it at Barcelona. He did.

Jim Baxter was a fantastic player, and I can see why people say he was the best player Scotland has produced. I just don't agree! Both Baxter and Johnstone had destructive mentalities. Jock Stein managed to keep a lid on Johnstones better than Scot Symon did with Baxter. I think Jinky made the most of his talent - and Baxter didn't! If I could pay to see either of those players at the top of their game today, Jimmy Johnstone is the one I would choose. But - that's just my opinion.

There's no one I can think of who compares to Jinky. By the way, I saw a post of yours where you said that George Best and Tom Finney were the best wingers Britain produced. I disagree with you about Best. Jinky was a better winger than Best. He was more skillful than Best. I saw the two of them play and I saw nothing from Best that dissuades me from that view. Best's ability to read a game was better, but that's it. Can't say about Finney, I never saw him play. Best was brilliant, though.

Jim Baxter and Jimmy Johnstone were extraordinary players and it's hard to compare them with anyone else. The game has changed since they played but I think they would both compare favourably with todays stars. Baxter had an arrogance about him that not many Scottish players have ever had. But he always looked graceful and elegant on the ball. Like he was born to do it. Scotland had some great players in the 60's and if they all had the arrogance and belief that Baxter had...well, who knows?

I think Baxter was better than Zidane, but he under achieved, imo. George Best wasn't overrated, Jinky was underrated. Not by the defenders he slaughtered, but by the English press and media. Scottish football wasn't poor in the 60's, and he played for the European champions. He done it at the highest level, and yet he rarely gets a mention. John Charles was the most versatile player Britain ever produced, but he was Welsh so won't get mentioned very often. I've seen a few items on TV about him.

mate the most versatile player ever is duncan edwards he was worldclass in each postion but your correct about charles he could fill a number of roles but i think he only played at center back and up front.

The thing is, we'll never know just how good Duncan Edwards was, will we? From what I've read and heard about him he was certainly a great player who know doubt would have been one of the all time greats, but we'll never know. Brian Clough, for example, could have gone on to be the greatest striker England ever had, because his goals per game record was phenomenal. But again, we'll never know, will we? Bobby Charlton said that Duncan Edwards was a fantastic player, and that will do for me.

for me shearer was the best striker england have ever had i don't go on goals scored but ablity as well gary linkier may have matched shearer for goalscoring but he never had shearers ablity.plus duncan edwards it is not how good he would have been but how good he was that counts for many old guys in there 60's or older who saw him he is the best they ever saw watch my videos on him mostly the tribute one's you will see just how good he was.

I meant we'll never know just how good Duncan Edwards was because he was only 21 when he died. I'm certain he would have become even better as he got older. For me the ability of a striker is to score goals. For ability and goalscoring I wonder where you would place Jimmy Greaves. He's the best striker England ever had in my opinion.

so do you think greaves had more ablity than shearer i have heard people say shearer was more complete than jimmy as a player anyway both legends and jimmy is 1 of shearers biggest fans.plus i am a rangers fan look at mccoist great goalscorer rooney not so great in that area but he is far better as a player than ally ever was.i know strikers are judged on goals but you look at ablity to see who the better player is ect kris boyd i think scores more in a season than king kenny did

I agree with you about ability because that's what I like. However, a striker can have loads of ability but if he doesn't score the goals, what use is he? McCoist had an ability to be in the right place at the right time, as has Kris Boyd. Not all strikers have that. Jimmy Grieves was playing in an era where defenders were like butchers dogs, and he had ability and goals in abundance. I like Shearer though, he's a great player. But I stick with Grieves because he was a better dribbler.

a striker like shearer is very useful if he does not score he can link up and he did create over 100 goals at blackburn plus he could work the defenders.boyd would be no use in a match unless he scored i don't reall know about mccoist i know 1 thing ally was not in shearer's class the 3 best striker i saw are shearer,ronaldo,henry plus was larsson better than mccoist as a player i think he was and people have told me he was.plus davie cooper what are you memories of him.

But Shearer could score the goals as well. I never rated McCoist anyway and Kris Boyd is a lazy sod as far as I can see. But they both put the ball in the net, which is the aim of the game. You need someone to do that. McCoist changed the job description on his passport when he saw Larsson playing. Larsson was streets ahead of McCoist. Souness didn't rate McCoist either. I first saw Davie Cooper when he played for Clydebank and it wasn't hard to spot that he was a wee bit special. No Jinky tho'

yes i know i have even seen a rangers video with a rangers fan saying mccoist was better than shearer the sad thing is he is old enough to have seen both.plus shearer was the best goalscorer i ever seen as well as the most complete striker i ever saw.i see bits of shearer in rooney the hard work,the thuderbolt of a shot from his boots his ablity to score anywhere near the box or about 30 yards out his ablity to link up with the midfeild and get out wide and be threat.

of todays players take bits of torres,drogba,rooney that would make shearer.rooney reminds me alot of shearer but he is more creative shearer could come deep and play a ball out wide rooney does that as well but will instead run to the edge of the box to get it back and shoot or play a ball in for teves or ronaldo he done this a lot last season passed the ball around alot and created goals.rooney on the feild sees more time on the ball than striker would as he drops deep and is involedmoreinplay

I think the only reason many people believe that Pele and Maradona were better than Jinky is because they both won World Cups which i dont think is fair on him as he could have easily walked into both the Brazillian and Argentininan teams. Alot of scottish players (or players in the SPL) have not got the credit they have deserved from other teams in the world just because the national team wasn't very good for a while. For example, people said Henrik Larsson would't cut it at Barcelona. He did.

Jinky was a true legend, spoken of in the same breath as the likes of george best. Mcgeadys not even close to that standard and never will be either. He has no end product atal, one trick wonder with that wee spin. I was at that game, Ibrox May 1967, 2-2, won us the league! Jinky was the greatest but McGeady is a fantastic footballer. I hope he stays at Celtic for a long time. Jinky would have played for nothing (so would I). Great vid.
