  • I've got a Hans Christian 34 (which is admittedly a different boat), but haven't had any trouble tacking (as long as you have at least about 8kts). You just have to plan accordingly... These are heavy and relatively slow boats, not meant for racing... ;^>

  • My Knutson 35 yawl has a detachable stay for the staysail so I don't have that issue.

  • I have an Island Packet 35, which also has a full keel. I would say that the staysail shroud is what makes tacking more difficult on these vessels, not the full keel. Bear in mind that these vessels are built for blue water sailing, where you may remain on the same tack for days or weeks at a time. They are not harbor sailors, and are not built to race around silly little triangles. If you want a boat that will tack quickly, you are barking up the wrong tree :-)

  • Not any more than any other full keel boat. I had no issues tacking her that day. It's just a matter of maintaining momentum and timing. She's a bit of a slug though, kinda like a Westsail 32 but she's well appointed and well built.

  • Is there any truth in what some people say about the HC33 being very difficult to tack with the modified full keel? I'm looking at this model boat as a potential purchase.
