You think maybe there is some true meaning to that moral? That peace isn't built upon a shared fear, but through more positive attributes, like the ones shared by families?
I could never figure out the design of the creature - was it's fanged mouth with breathing tube part of its "face" or was it an entire breathing apparatus clamped down over the lower half of its face? I remember trying to draw this alien as a child.
In "The Architects of Fear", the monstrously-altered Leighton, was judged by some local stations to be so frightening that the creature's eyes were obscured on some prints at the time of broadcast. yes by today's standards, no biggie. Ah! The good old days!
I heard that Alan Moore specifically changed the original ending of Watchmen at the last minute fearing it would be too similar to this. Although I cannot prove that rumor's veracity it is cool to think of this as a sort of alternate ending to Watchmen.
I haven't heard that; I know that while he was writing part 10 he read about this and noticed the similarity which is why The Outer Limits is on the tv right at the end of the last comic
The first time I saw this ep was way back... they said the alien was so disturbing that some channels blanked out the face... I was hoping for something really creepy, but I guess by the time I saw it the effects were no longer state of the art, and it was just goofy looking, and I was disappointed. The novel _Man Plus_ by Frederick Pohl, is similar to this, where the scientists rebuild a man to survive on Mars unassisted, and he ends up looking like a demon. He also seeks out his wife.
Thanks for sharing these vids - I too came here because of its mentioned connection to Watchmen.
I wonder if Ronald Reagan could have possibly been aware of this program/episode when he made his (somewhat) famous speech at the UN about the powers of the world uniting to fight an "extraterrestrial threat."
Thanks for putting this up. I have enjoyed it. Alan Moore "recognises" its similarity to Veidt's idea in Watchmen by mentioning this Outer Limits episode in the graphic novel's last chapter.
What is the monkey for in this story? What is its purpose? Why is it being kept? Thanks.

The ultimate cold war television show. The fears in us all were brought forth in these episodes. A great television classic.

I had no idea this existed. Excellent piece, way better handled, specially at the end, than Watchmen...
