How does one know exactly where to dig to avoid crushing the clam? Ignorant San Diegan here

@nitronick389 if you use a "gun" you put the barrel directly over the dimple. If you use a shovel you go about 4-6 inches below the dimple.

nice razor, but i thought the average razor clam in Alaska was much bigger than that?
Here in Wa. state we usually get clams in the 4-5.5" range.

@crabber59 They should be, but this location is very close to Anchorage so it gets a lot of clamming pressure. I suspect further down the peninsula they get bigger.
