@mossiemoopers Yep, but Ireland in general. With its one season and varying degrees of wind (hurricane) and moisture (deluge). I've seen these guys working in Cobh and from Roches point and its not for the faint hearted. I used to work in shipping, the German and Dutch captains used to say the pilots in Cork were the best in the business!
If the "Health and Safety" brigade had their way no ship could enter port in anything above a force 3 because the pilot transfer would be too risky. Bananas would be over-ripe on supermarket shelves! So thank the skill and daring of these guys and the seaworthyness of their boats for your fresh oranges and lemons!
i no who built dat boat i have been on it nd dere used to be a shiny bit of metal on front off it nd seagulls used to see there reflection nd peck at it hahahhaha wat a boat go on da interceptors
To all those saying to give credit to fishermen and all those who go out in other boats in this weather, but are ye forgetting that a guy has to get off this boat onto the larger ship in those conditions. Not exactly an easy task!!!!!
There are some newer videos of these pilot boats with even better rough weather footage, search "Violent storm force 11" in you tube search, its well worth viewing.
There are some newer, even better videos of these boats in rough weather on you tube, search 'Interceptor 55 slamed by big wave'and also 'Malta pilot boat' these are a couple of excellent videos.
WoW, just went to your channel Frank. I didn't know you were the designer of this vessel. Well done to you too. You must be justly proud. I've been in a few storms myself and remember praying that the shipbuilders and naval architects knew what they were doing because I knew my captain did and wasn't worried about him. lol Was this videoed from shore? It sure is a steady hand on the camera if it wasn't.

well mucker impressive seas was taken bk by the roll of the bgantwerp...but u were goin so slow man i thought u were goin backwards. did u actually board the ship in the end..she was goin faster than u.lol
I think those pilot boats should be multihulls which are much more stable than singles. But yes that boat is well-made and handled those huge seas as well as any monohull would.
You know the seas are big when the bow bulb on a container ship comes completely out of the water!!
thats fricking huge and there haulin 20+ knots on the swells jeez crazy looks a HELL of a lot easier to do than it accually is you have to use a technique to keep from overheating the transmission or messing up your screws (the props)
Super video, used to spend a lot of time on Fort Davis and watching the Pilot boat pull along side some of those Monsters was scary... speaking of which, it would have been cool to show in the video the pilot getting off the ship and onto the boat... just a thought.
Pilot boats are used to transfer pilots on to, and off ships to both bring them in or out through difficult harbour entrances and aproaches. They have to operate in all weather conditions. As you can imagine, coming alongside a ship in these conditions is not easy on both boat and crew.
I had said to the coxwains that if they were ever doing a video In really bad conditions, give me a call and I would video it. Conditions were so bad they transfered the pilot at the start of the video, then ran out offshore into the weather so that we could get the video, respect to the lads on her for doing it, they had balls because it was really bad, but they had confidence in the Interceptor and it was no problem for her. (designer & builder of her)
I know what its like. I'm a harbour pilot myself in Penang (Malaysia)but its pretty plain sailing here. No gale force wind. Wonderful clip to honour those who knows what it's like to work in those conditions.
did the pilot boad or what!!!!!!
