Bro, Nice locks. Listen ..Im getting dreads but I dont want to go to the salon and do it. My mom is always tellling me to do it at the salon but Im broke! lol SO I twisted my hair myself. Will that work.. I mean will it look good after a while of maintenance? I feel like when the root grows outward more it wont be locked in with the twisted area. Got any tips?

Hey man im thinking of getting dreads and i have long hair already( 1 foot and 1 inch) but its curly and i want to know if when i get the dreads going if its going to stretch out the curl and make the dread be that length.

And one more thing... Im using headwear almost every day becuse my hair cover my face. Is it bad? I have heard rumors like the hear don't get air and die and stuffs. Hope u have time for these questions :)

Your hair doesn't need oxygen to survive

Only problem with hats, is that if you don't dry your dreads properly after you wash them, keeping the hat on wont allow them to air dry, so they could get moldy and what not.

You could use this to create split dreads too! make it with mature smooth dreads, and then let the roots dread up, and the undo the twist, voila! Split dreads!

Hi Jonny, im gonna let my hair grow for a while before i get dreads.. Maybe like 2 years! I don't know.. Everyday after i have worked, i need to take shower and wash my hair. Will it make my hair grow slower or anything like that?

By my observations, dreads do grow slower than 'normal hair', My own dreads have only grown 1-2 inches in the last 17 months, and many of my friends with dreads experience the same thing.

Hey John, do you know roughly how many dreads you have? The reason I ask is because I'm not sure how many dreads I should get, but I really like yours and I really like John Butlers. For some reason I thought you said like 80 one time? JB's are a bit thicker so I was thinking like maybe getting 60 or would those be massively thicker?

what you are describing here is a "two strand twist" nothing new. you can also interlock the roots (put the end of one dread through the base of the other before you start twisting them together to ensure that they behave themselves.

but question...isn't there a chance there might be a split in the middle if the 2 dreads don't lock together from top till bottom?...what should i do if there's a split in my dread?

Put a spacer in it, Look awesome.

But if you want to remove it, I guess just crochet it together. Or use some actual needle and thread with a vibrant colour against your dread, just to add some decoration, and then the dread should lock back together.

srry for the extra slow responce...niw thnx for the advice...but i have quite a lot of small dreadlocks...and because if this i'm not sure how effective it would be..the smaller your dreads the more time it takes to lock up.

I know it sounds like a freakin advert - but I just maintain'em like it recommends on the DreadHeadHQ site - I started 'em with the dread wax - washem with dread soap - the whole 9. I also try to stay on top of clockwise rubbing the new growth which eliminates a lot of loose hair. I take care of the rest with a loose hair tool. So yea, no secret, just sticking to tha plan =]

hey guys i have a question. Is it ok for you to crochet your dreadlocks through the root? Because i have really straight hair and have had dreads for about 3 years and my mom does the maintenance on them, however, she has been crocheting the dread through the roots in order to dread the roots so that loose hair wont keep coming out after she puts it into the dreads. Is this ok? Or is there another way to tighten and knot the roots?

The best way to knot and tighten new growth and loose hair at the roots is clockwise rubbing. It can be tough to get the hang of but it's worth it. It makes very smooth dreads over time and you can do it anytime. There's a butt load of info on the dreadheadhq site. Look for the Clockwise Rubbing page in the Maintenance section.
