PJ Jr. The father of the west coast guitar sound. Amazing! I discovered him through Rivera Amplification, hope there are more of you doing the same with Fretted Americana.
So much for promoting the Evil Robot. I call frettemericana to purchase one. They took my name/number and never called me back. Is this the customer service I am should expect from Fretteamericana ?
Next time you do a special series like this: Please, less talking, MORE PLAYING! :D
Not to be mean, but you guys clearly are more comfortable producing music than interviews, and I enjoyed this clip so much more than the others. The guys playing also speaks a lot more about the Robot's qualities. (Perfect match of Jackson Jr's clean and Phils dirty sound!!!)
At 3:57 Phil started to play new riff, I know this from somewhere, or this is something very similar, but I can't recognize what is this? Can someone help? :)
@Enduran91 How can you judge the sound of either of these guitars without taking into account the player or the amp? The way someone plays and the way the amp is set to react make up a huge part of the overall tone. Paul is playing much softer into a cleaner amp while Phil is playing harder into a driven amp, totally different.
Phil is a tremendous player. I love his style, talent, technique, tone (not in this particular video though), musical background, personality, etc and I spend a lot of time watching his videos (+ The Drills). In this jam, however, I think Paul outshined Phil big time. I had no idea Paul was this good. I still wouldn't buy Paul's CD or go see him live because that's not the style I enjoy listening to, but he definitely stole this video.
Hey all you Phil X fans, if you like his playing as much as I do, his youtube channel is "philx1111", and you can find some awesome live stuff on "rockynashfilms".
Although, I think I want to find more Paul Jackson Jr music!
See what Phil did here? He effortlessly adapted to Paul's style and blended with his tone and groove... half the guitarists i know would just scratch their heads and ask when it was time to drop to B and chug away with the fuzz on 10
In the beginning of the video, the way Phil effortlessly inserts himself into the groove and provides backbone to what Paul is playing really shows how great of a guitar player he really is - fantastic playing from Phil and Paul.
I dont want to take anything away from Phil's skill but i think this jam has kind of brought a new understanding of his playing and actually the kind of person Phil is. He is just like any one else. you can see in his plying that he admires Paul. Indeed he is just like a normal dude with absolutely magical hands for guitar and the best job in the fucking world.
I had forgotten that PRS did the hollow thang! It looks like such an awesome guitar but the two ideas just don't seem to go together, prs and hollow. Why can't I wrap my head around the two?! Too awesome?!
I guess I'd understand if I got a PRS solid and was more acclimated. Too many other guitars I want. Dave Weiner's PRS 7 strings are too amazing to start thinking of any other PRS's.
Nothing against Paul, but I just like Phil's phrasing better. I'm not a fan of the jazz type. Phil's phrasing just goes better with the rhythm. It's got more of a classical rock style to it. I also prefer Phil's tone to the uber cleans of Paul. Sounds like Phil has the tone rolled off a little bit too.
Paul is awesome, it shows the depth of his guitar skill(or talent). was totally immersed in every note Paul played and just almost falling asleep, subconsciously. A varied skill of a guitar performance, hope it inspired Phil something,
It's amazing how Paul just smokes Phil, it must have been quite a humbling experience for Phil, but also Phil's playing at the beginning feels so out of place, maybe on the second half he starts sounding better, but I would expect such a great player like Phil to play something more adequate to what Paul was playing.
LOVE Phil and Paul. But of all the hundreds of Phil X vids I've seen, this is the first e v e r that I didn't like his tone. Ever! Two amazing players but I thought their tones did not compliment whatsoever :(
@ThanasiManoli Yeah I completely agree, it sounded like really computerised/digital, something that a 15y/o metalhead would come up with after putting a boss metalzone distortion on it or something. And Phil tried too hard with his shredding, he should've just taken his own advice and let it flow.
Amazing series though, still love Phil and now I'm a fan of Paul's!
@Aberinkulas I don't thunk so, Phil is more a Rock N' Roll man than a Blues man, that's why Paul, who seems to be a bluesman, win that kind of battle. But if it's about RN'R, I really think Phil wins.
Anyone else seriously impressed with Paul's tone? I had no idea this amp was capable of those kind of cleans! Just like they said in the interview- full, fat, and with a nice chime all at the same time. Very tasty. Excellent tone aside, Paul is also an outstanding player.
@jacobtheguitarfreak Totally. Absolutely. I spent an hour trying to get a sweet tone like that outta my amp. Couldn't. I'm this close to ordering an Evil Robot.
@RuroiniStenchin What Phil X are you talking about? Based on his other videos he seems to have a huge scale vocabulary but a somewhat limited chord vocabulary.
Is there such thing as an Evil Robot Pocket Amp? If there is, I will buy twenty of them, just because that would be THE SHIT. My Marshall seems to be lacking that bit of scratchiness I think I'm looking for.
Don't know if it's because I saw 250 videos of Phil, but I think he's gettin kinda repetitious... always fast and with crazy phrases, never a slow down warm overdriven solo... look at Paul, the way he plays... man, there are 3.000+ chords in every phrase ( hahaha ) , and that's fuckin awesome! Keep on rockin, Phil and keep on blowin minds, Paul, you guys are pretty awesome players and musicians.
@frettedamericana thank you so much for putting that interview together! Two amazing musicians both very talented! And I learned two chords! YAY lol :P beginning to think Phil-X is part "flubber" (Disney film) and part "Animal" (from the Muppets) with a good shovel full of Rock God throwin' in for good measure!
I love how phil gives a Rock riff and Paul makes this super awesome Blues Jazz stuff out of it that´s my kind of music there only should be a bit Roll in it and it would be ready to record and sell !!
paul shamlessly plugged his cd to phil and they discussed the cover picture.... did, uh, did phil give paul WE BRING THE ROCK N ROLL and talk about its cover art? eh? eh??
09:29 - 09:45 Excellent fingering technique from Phil on those scales. Something to watch & learn from.
Paul's style is more comfortable with the style of jam themes, and it is good to see Phil let Paul take some solos, vamp some chords & showcase another way to amaze people with awesomeness. Also good to see Phil have to adapt to a style that is probably not his usual gig.

I just said he was outclassed and played mostly pentatonics in this clip, his phrasing wasn't as complex or as smooth as Paul.
I think that Phil plays by thinking about scales whereas Paul relies on a chord tone approach, giving him much more options
