I think the reason he's not showing the guitar is because Johnson often played with his back to the audience so no aspiring guitarists would be able to copy what he played.
playing facing a wall in a studio was common, and what johnson did, but more because 1) he was nervous and 2) its been noted many artists back then played facing a corner for audial purposes.
no one has ever said anything about him playing that way in front of a typical audience, and for reasons of secrecy.
