I remember, when I was about 8 and still afraid of the dark, my mom got me a little stuffed porcupine. She would have me settle into bed with it, and then either sing or play a tape of a few different calming songs. This was one of the songs on the tape, and she would always get teary eyed when it came on. I listen to it now, only ten years later, and have the same reaction she had. Brilliant as BJ is always - Im now retired after 30 years in the record industry (retired hurt as they say in cricket and its a bit terminal) - I worked with Elton for 13 years but still consider Billy the songwriter who appeals to me most - Elton in his DJM was just as brilliant but Billy never faltered contsistant all the way through. Anyway great track

My mother used to sing this to me when i was young.... it means a lot to me.... she has a beautiful voice.... she cryed.... i didnt undestand but now i do.... memories shot back.... when my father left this is what comforted her... thank you... i might only be 13 but i will not forget this... thank you....

I too have experienced a lot at a young age (although I'm 28 now) I wanted to share this quote with you by Abraham Lincoln: "It's not the amount of years in your life that matter, it's the amount of life in your years." @aidenisthebest98 the night before my dad died i played this for him (he was a 1/2 step from comatose) a tear rolled down his cheek he passed the next night and the next morning as in this video seagulls hovered outside my kitchen window where seaguls are never seen....now i can't watch this video without crying and I am a grown man

I remember, when I was about 8 and still afraid of the dark, my mom got me a little stuffed porcupine. She would have me settle into bed with it, and then either sing or play a tape of a few different calming songs. This was one of the songs on the tape, and she would always get teary eyed when it came on. I listen to it now, only ten years later, and have the same reaction she had. I now know that I will play or sing this to my (eventual) kids quite a bit. I still have the animal somewhere.

I would test this theory with 'And So It Goes'. This is gorgeous too. Just discovered it. Bob Chilcott did a choral arrangement of And So It Goes - it's incredibly beautiful and haunting. This would work beautifully too.

I remeber when Billy Joel first released this song and unfortunately my son was a bit old for lullabyes but I do sing this sweet song to my grandson now and thanks for reminding us what is important in our lives

I sang this as a bass in the Men's Chorus at my University 2 years ago: my fiance still requests it, and I graduated February 2011. Thinks it's a keeper/fan favorite. :)

Most people use this song as a special parent-child melody, but my boyfriend and I actually have this as our song. <3 So many of the lyric relate to our story personally. We were cuddling one night and he played this song while stroking my hair... It's such a beautiful memory.

I tear up when it comes to the lyrics "i promised i would never leave you"...well my father broke his promise <|3 He left me and my family. Yet as bad as a father he was i still kept the book.
